Marcus Rashford (Out) | Ornstein: United want to keep, will only consider substantial bids

The unjust horror of fans telling a footballer who saunters around the pitch on £350k a week that their workrate isn't that great. Awful stuff. Someone's surely going to write a song to draw attention to this. Has anyone let Geldof know yet?

It's not his fault for playing dreadfully and phoning in performances - it's your fault for noticing. Woe is him. He needs to take accountabiltiy, work harder, stop being so thin-skinned that his mental health is derailed by @WeetabixPerv44 calling him crap at 2am on Twitter, or sod off.

Example 1578 of Rashford showing he doesn’t have the mentality to be the top man at the club.

There was a period fans were done with Giggs, the whole country hated Ronaldo and fans hated Rooney after the transfer request. None of these guys bitched about being victims, they just got on with their jobs and proved how good they could be.

From the very start I said we’ve given too much too this guy for way too little. He’s entitled and doesn’t understand the demands of being a top player at this club.

Rashford has to understand as a celebrity the abuse is inevitable. You could say 200K of your 350K weekly paycheck is for this . You have been compensated for it and just need to shut up and learn to deal with it.

Now he would need to improve his performance and attitude so he worth the other 150K of his paycheck . Right now he plays worse than most wingers in the championship teams , set aside those playing in EPL .

I don't think it's fair to compare modern day players to players that played before the social media era. They would get abused at games. Once they went home, it stopped. That isn't the case for players any more.

I do agree that he likely doesn't have the mentality to be our top man. If you're playing badly, you have to accept that you will be criticised. There are many people that take it too far, but that's life.

I would take being abused on SNS over dozens of pissed off blokes showing up in front of my door every day of the week.

You're wrong. Look into the abuse Beckham got and you'll see that.

The reality is that if you're going to be a star at Manchester United you'll be exposed to all manner of criticism, a lot of it unfair criticism but it's part in parcel of being a player for one of the great clubs. United will always generate clicks and sell papers.

I wish the best for Rashford, he comes from the same town I grew up in, but I don't think this club is for him and I think it is best for all parties if he moves on.

If you don’t play well enough you will get criticised. It’s not abuse, it’s being called out for not doing a job properly.

If he wants an easier ride then go play in the MLS.

Abuse is unjustified. Wonder how jobless and sad your life is that you would go on twitter and start tagging people with abuse.
However, this "woe is me" mentality is why he is where he is. He doesn't do the barest minimum. Part of me even feels he takes all criticism as abuse. Just feck him off please.

Only explanation that would give me sympathy would be if he has been forced to play with injuries throughout the season, because we are so threadbare in attack.

Obviously abuse is never ok, but as depressing as that sounds, it is just a fact of social media these days. So if Rashford is truly bothered by it, he should simply get off those platforms, because he cannot change it. It's probably something many people would benefit from, also beyond professional sports.

The fact he’s up at 1am stewing over things like this isn’t good. Obvious that his head isn’t in the game when he plays too

This 100%, delete it all. You will not regret it.

Never had it and never will.

As for Rashford, I don't know anything about twitter - but as a Manchester Utd player he needs to move on for himself.

He should move abroad. A change of scenery may help him leave his troubles here and revatalise him as a person / player.

On abuse, I’ll never support it. Especially as I imagine some of it will be racial nature. On the football criticism, it is absolutely justified as beyond poor performances, Rashford has let us down with a lack of effort far too many times now.

Yeah that's a good point. I do think the abuse of him has gone overboard, but why is he scrolling on Twitter reading about himself? Surely a club psychologist would advise against this? It's only going to make you feel like shit.

There is research emerging showing a detrimental impact on children's mental health from social media use and it doesn't take much of a leap to think it is the same for adults; especially those who are exposed to hundreds of thousands of anonymous opinions about themselves 24/7.

These associations were stronger than links between mental health and binge drinking, sexual assault, obesity, and hard drug use, suggesting that these associations may have substantial practical significance as many countries are experiencing rising rates of depression, anxiety, and suicide among teenagers and young adults.

We’re obviously not going to be selling to a domestic rival. Real Madrid have a surplus of left forwards who are better and younger - one of whom is going to be the player he could potentially replace at PSG. The Italian teams are unlikely to cough up the money needed for a permanent transfer, and pay his salary.

PSG have been heavily linked in the past and it’s been confirmed that his brother/agent was in strong talks with then last season. People are just making assumptions here, nobody is claiming to be a financial director who is privy to who will be interested in Rashford.
Why not sell to a “domestic rival” ?

Even if there were a domestic rival interested, I don’t see a problem. United need him off their books.

I agree, I think the relationship has soured even with united fans and Rashford. A move would be the best for both parties.

Yep, as father of two children under 11, I can honestly say the addiction is real - we had consoles but you was still playing mates in a room on the same TV and taking turns with the winner staying on.

Now, other kids come round and boom they are on the tablets ("Ipad'), not even speaking.. I switch off the WiFi on Sundays now, we don't even 4G round here - it really hits home how much even adults use the phone (its really not a phone) in a day.

All fans want is for players to show that they care. Rashford body language screams I fcking don't care about the club, the teammates, the manager and the fans. So in theory he could be a man and take the abuse coming his way take it on the chin and man up roll his sleeves up and put the work in. But he is just not that into it. We need people who are. Sell him the sooner the better.

I think thats harsh. He has played through various injuries for the club so I don’t think its a case of not caring to be honest.

I think he is struggling for form and usually when he is he looks rubbish. He really is a confidence player.

I agree on moving him on

I can't wait for this tosser to feck off. It is so easy to see the good side of social networks when you play well but the real world isn't sunshine and rainbows.
Getting abused is never ok, let's make that clear but why is he even on those platformes on his current form and season.
He loves being the center of attention

This guy is ridiculously sensitive.
It might be that he knows playing a victim will get him some credit from the fans and mask his shit performances. It does seem to work tbh. He has a strong PR team as well that spins simple "performance criticism" as a personal attack.

He's not the kind of player that will get motivated by criticism, we should get rid.

It does feel like he's becoming mentally weaker but also none of us have any idea of the amount of abuse he may be getting. It's a dickhead move to personally message a footballer and abuse them. It was shitty to do to Maguire and if Rashford is getting similar then it's just as bad.

He's obviously not in a great headspace and may be spiralling seeking this kind of stuff out, but it doesn't make him a tosser or a dickhead or anything like that.

For what it's worth I think he should leave in the summer. There's just a way to go about it that isn't hounding a local kid who is probably slowly realising his time at his one and only club might be ending.
