His general play is so weak at times. He needs to improve that truly be a top player. Too much bobbling around, either running into defenders or struggling to trap the ball.

Rashford played out of position last night. Some of you are reading too much about this.

I personally think the criticism is fair. Yes, he prefers playing off the left, and is far better at it, and I’m convinced he would have had Onana playing him in behind a few times had he been able to make his usual runs. What’s annoying for me, is thah rashford was up against Craig Dawson and Max Kilman, and In my opinion a young, strong quick attacking player should have absolutely loved coming up against those two. He should have torn them to shreds, but he let them off the hook and those two had a very easy game for it. Assuming wolves don’t sign anyone, watch those two defenders against Brighton. Should danny welbeck or Evan Ferguson be able to make those two work harder than Rashford? I think not, but they will. He can be confident that he’s only going to play as a striker for a few more weeks until hojlund comes into the fold and martial gets some fitness. He should be busting a gut at all times, because we need it.

Really worrying performance. Lazy and lacklustre, shades of the Rangnick days.

How he can’t get himself up for the opening game of the season at home I have no idea. If I’m Ten Hag I’m benching him for the next game to send a message that that is unacceptable conduct.

Garnacho was absolute bin fodder last night but at least the kid was trying.

He really needs to start putting in more work when we haven’t got the ball, the little trot he does is infuriating.

He will play through the middle a lot, since he has had many good performances there, and scored bunch of goals playing from that position. People need to stop blaming it on position, it's not much different performance than we've seen from him when he is not allowed space on the counter.

Also his partners in attacj were shite, same goes with midfield behind him, I don't think he got one good pass the entire night?

It's like watching 2 different players in the same game when he switches position. Moved to LW, created couple of good attacking moves in no time, played centrally all game and barely did anything right.

EtH is just making 2 positions weaker with this move, Sancho as 9 was looking good and Rashford will always be a good wide forward.

On last nights display, new contract, 2021 Rashford. Lets hope he gets up to speed quickly.

He doesn't make runs unless it's in behind on a high line, he doesn't put in any effort to draw defenders and it allows the defense to easily maintain their shape. There is an interdependency between the front three and if one isn't working for the team, it makes it very difficult for the other two to get space to operate. Both Garnacho and Antony were surrounded and easily cut off every time they had the ball.
Yet you’ve somehow chosen to blame only Marcus. . .

He plays up front & scores, crickets. He plays up front & doesn’t score, he’s lazy [which is what your first few sentences basically amount to].

As I said he’s not the ideal no.9 but Garnacho has yet to prove he can start games & Antony is a fecking myth. It’s difficult to be interdependent when he’s shifted from his best position & whoever is playing there is usually a lot worse than he is.

To me he really doesn't want to play number 9.

He never runs behind the defenders in central positions whereas he does it 100 times on the left.

He's not strong enough neither to face a low block.

But to me it's his attitude. He didn't wanted to play there and didn't really worked at his position.

Hope that Martial can come back next week to play at least 30min so Rashford can have a go on the left

I was really disappointed in him last night. Frustrating for him as he didn't get on the ball a lot, sure, but no excuse for the Ronaldo-esque strop every time he got tackled.

Agreed, he has his flaws as a no. 9 but the biggest one is his lack of desire to play there. He doesn't relish the physicality which also doesn't mean he doesn't have it. He's just not interested in showing it and duelling with defenders most of the time.

It's like he's worried about his back.

He gets disinterested far too easily when not involved as much, this is why he needs to play wide where he can see more of the ball.

Ten Hag still using Rashford badly. If only plays well and affects the game on the LW. Using him as a ST or RW or anywhere else is waste of his abilities, He should perform better regardless, but he looks a different player on LW. Keep him there.

The criticism is on here is so overboard, the whole team was extremely poor. To start labelling him lazy is ridiculous and every one is basing it on one play in the game.

He's terrible defensively on the LW, thats not a new thing. His goals last season covered up a lot of flaws that are still in his game.

Lacks so many attributes to be a number 9 that it's never really made sense. He's a centerback's dream, doesn't impose his physique, doesn't press them without the ball and lacks any ingenuity when he has the ball.

I sometimes think in his own head he thinks he's the Mancunian Mbappe and the normal rules don't apply to him.

I do worry that his all round game will never reach what's required. First touch almost always lacking and breaks down moves.

There was a point last night where we were doing very intricate fast paced passes on the edge of the box (might've been Casemiro and Bruno) and then as soon as it went to Rashford he miscontrolled it and the move broke down. Saying that, most players did similar last night.

IF Martial was fit, and Holjlund was available, that's where he'd have played. He was shit last night, nothing came off, and he's not a number 9 by any stretch. He never win's headers from long balls, sometimes he doesn't even jump. He is so much better when he receives the ball out wide and has the option to cut in or go outside. When he's through the middle he does not have the nouse to play that position, and drifts out of games.

he actually had a moment in second half i think where he charged down a defender, actually won the header off the bounce, and seemingly could be thru in our goal. Then got forced wide, did some weird little behind the back cutback attempt with the ball, and was yards away from actually succeeding with it and getting a shot off.

I really don’t get the excuses about him not starting on the left. There’s nothing to stop him attacking down the left wing when he’s picked as a number 9. Look at the areas of the pitch Rooney and Henry used to attack from.

And if he is going to start games wide left then he needs to be a hell of a lot better at tracking back than he usually seems to want to be.

Yup. I remember that. Beaten in a foot race by Kilman. Comfortably. Not his finest moment.

Are we back to he is playing injured again. If you’re on the pitch it’s not a valid excuse.

A lot of posters are willing to look the other way because Rashford played as a CF and he is not a CF. But how can you let go of the fact that he was not pressing, he was not tracking back after giving the ball away, he could not even get his passes right. Even if you play on the wing, you are supposed to win headers, help the defense and he could not even do that when he was playing on the wing. Him supposedly being the most important player at United shows how far the quality of the team and expectations have gone down. 8th season at United but there's hardly anything he has improved in other than his bank balance.

I did notice in the 1st half he made a half hearted attempt at jumping for a header around the halfway line. He got beaten but then started clutching his back. After that he didn’t really attempt to win anymore

Yes, I noticed that as well. I didn't he would win it, and not only did he win the header, it threw the defender off and he managed to get away from him but only to make that disappointing skill/move that broke down the attack (I think? Need to rewatch that sequence again). He needs to stop being so tunned-visioned and look up more, but to be fair most of his team-mates were guilty doing the same at some point during the game.

Maybe he should've started his pre pre-season 2 weeks before pre-season rather than 10 days.

Have you read the title of the thread?

Rashford did play lazy, and has done far too much throughout his career. You either don't understand there's a big distinction between missed chances, unsuccessful dribbles or bad passes, and simply not putting in the requisite effort, or you don't want to. I can live with the latter as it happens to every player, but there's no excuse for the former.

This isn't an opinion. Watch the match. He was lazy and uninterested and that's a fact.

I just don’t get the feel that he ever leaves first gear anymore. Like it never looks like he fully applies himself.

Super conservative with his sprints both in explosiveness and how often he does it, shies away from physical duels, doesn’t press, and the things he had in abundance when he was younger - flair and ability to dribble and beat a man - seem to have abandoned him.

I don’t know if he’s instructed to conserve/manage his stamina and that’s why he plays like this - but it just feels like he’s out there going through the motions.

Not sure if this goes back to his back injury or before that, but it’s concerning. He had a very efficient season last season in terms of goal scoring, but I felt like all of the aforementioned still applied, and when he’s not putting them in the back of the net it feels like you’re hard carrying him through games.

Typically a bit sympathetic to Rashford seeing as he seems to get a harsher ride from certain posters on here but 100% agree with that assessment from last night. Everything he did looked half arsed from the closing down to basically anything else, worrying thing is he wasn't alone the whole team was so disjointed.

Rashford didn't stand a chance last night...c'mon you can criticise a CF when the 10 men behind him are all having a bad game.

He regularly struggles with the basics of football. That alone is reason enough he won't ever be an elite player.

When he has a purple patch just about every shot goes in but even then the other parts of his game is still lacking..
He's shown he can be a very good passer when he picks his head up and is decisive. He had a few really nice assists last but could and should have had more. I've seen him play intricate passes in the box as well especially with Martial, and his movement in the box can be very intelligent. It's just a matter of effort and want to.
