I was as swept up as anyone in the whole Marcus Rashford is the saviour of the poor hype the past year or so, which I put down partly to collective lockdown madness, but am seriously wondering if it isn't almost entirely the work of some PR genius who realised they could take this random young footballer and turn him into an icon.
I doubt he wrote even half the stuff that he did to be honest, looking back - taking on MPs on Twitter, etc. It feels ridiculous even writing that, because how could it possibly have been? It was too well constructed, too pitch perfect to be real. Even down to elements such as him wearing a facemask in post-match interviews etc, all feels so carefully orchestrated looking back now.
I feel like I'm being incredibly harsh as I do genuinely like the kid, and from a football perspective think he is just going through a prolonged rough patch of form, but this PR onslaught this week has really pissed me off.
