The One thing I don't get is how some players are fine when they do crap all - their excuse being because they didn't receive any chances to score.

Then Rashford plays and that doesn't really matter.
This. Will be the same ones in the match day thread posting rapidly every missed controlled touched but complete silence when it's someone else. Don't get me wrong he was completely anonymous the 1st half but who wasn't? We had 5 touches in their 3rd or something stupid. Outside of that was his work rate any different to Sancho? Don't have the stats to hand but hard to believe they where much different and I've seen multiple people applaud him.

Definitely needs to step up a level but again who doesn't in this team?

I'd like to say he's not been match fit, but that's been said to death over the past two seasons.

He doesn't fight tooth and nail like his character as a person and love for United suggests he would. It's a bit strange.

Of course everyone was on the back foot today by design, but even so Rashford was unimpressive. He hasn’t looked right for quite some time.

Really couldn't believe his run when Sancho was through on goal. One of the most stupid things i've seen from a United player.

Respect to Sancho for keeping his cool and finishing it off by himself.

I couldn't believe it when I was watching that. I was half-shouting "Stay behind! Stay behind!" at the TV.

Just stay two steps behind, it really is not difficult.

I mean as long as he's onside (and he was - just! ) does it matter how tight it is?

Again, he was onside... And without his run the chance isn't as easy for Sancho.

Rashford was picked for two reasons...first one - he would offer those runs in behind in a game we were likely to need them. He didn’t offer that. Second- he would offer more than Ronaldo out of possession and we could stop Chelsea’s centre halves and full backs stepping out with the ball. He didn’t do that either.

He needs to step up his work rate at the very least. Still doesn’t look fit but I have no idea how that could be the case.

No you have definitely got that one wrong.

At the point where Sancho goes to strike the ball, Rashford was ahead of the ball, and thus if Sancho squared it to Rashford at that point then Rashford would have been offside.

It is not even a debate, it is a matter of fact.

In the end Sancho made the correct decision to take the shot on himself.

Only because of the shot feint - if he had passed it when he feinted Rashford was onside (see my post above)

Regardless - he certainly wasn't "offside the whole way" as a couple of posters a few pages back claimed.

Yeah he does look it at first - but you can tell from the grass lines on the pitch he isn't

See (it's a gallery so click through)

That looks tight but I think you’re right you know. Looks at most level with the ball.

You might actually be right and still its so hard to call on the last picture. Wouldn't want to be sancho in that position

He was onside with his run until Sancho faked the pass and scored.

Also I give him credit for that run starting from the own box, as it made the Situation much easier for Sancho.

From higher framerate images he's offside the whole way down.

Video here

Sky showed an analysis of it from a way better angle in the post-match, where it was even clearer - they pointed out that he was offside the entire counter - but they don't upload the analysis.

Rashford enters box before ball does

Sancho pulls his leg back to pass the ball to Rashford (but he cannot pass to Rashford because Rashford is ahead of the ball and is therefore offside). So because Rashford is offside, Sancho decides to 'shimmy' instead.

After Sancho performed the 'shimmy' he had no choice but to shoot because Rashford was offisde.

Massive credit is due to Sancho, as he must have been aware that Rashford was in front of the ball.

He was good at the start of the second half, was a bit disappointed he dithered when 1vs1 with Hudson-Odoi.

He was clearly offside, hence Sancho went by himself because 9/10 situations a player like. Sancho will go for a pass because that's the best thing to do in that situation.

There was also another situation when Rashford was stupidly offside when he didn't have to if he wasn't lazy. Situations like thiswill pile up in a game and instead of 5 good chances being on a front footwe defend for 10 more minutes, this can make or break the game.

Luckily we have Greenwood coming back and Sancho in good form, so Rashy will be benched if he doesn't perform, but let's see the next game if the story is different when we are not parking the bus..

You absolute maniac. He isn’t forced to “shimmy” because Rashford is offside. He uses Mendy’s awareness of Rashford to fake a pass and set up an easy finish.

Another mad man. You can see in the fecking image you posted that he’s not offside.

@Pogue Mahone I don't know if you're on a windup or if I'm going mad. He genuinely looks offside

Edit - Because that slideshow is annoying... I think he's mostly in front of the ball, even with the grass lines.

Close but I think Rashy is just ahead of the ball. Probably would get called in line.

Literally way ahead of the ball here.

Behind the ball in this, 1-0 to Pogue

Foot looks ahead of the line and the ball definitely isn't, the grass line shows this quite clearly.

Rashy's foot is on the line but argubly his tippy toe is just over it. I think the ball is more behind but it's a tight call.

Look at the fecking lines on the grass! The one and only moment he is possibly offside (and it’s still a tight decision) is right after Sancho fakes the shot and is about to score. Up until that point he is clearly onside throughout. Watch the ball and the lines on the grass.

Rashford does something really stupid from time to time. Im glad Sancho kept his head cold, and didnt fall for Rashford trap there

I just edited it to include some commentary. I think Rashy is only in line with the ball in one of those images.

I'll have to stop now though because this is like looking an optical illusion

He stayed ahead of Sancho the whole time. Doesnt matter where the ball is is when they're both running, every time Sancho caught up to the ball to take a touch, Rashford was offside.

As commendable as his work with the free school meals was he really needs to cut out the politics shit and focus completely on his day job..honestly think the entire circus has gotten to him and that when his mural was defaced it must have affected him more than he realised
Ridiculous speculation.

Sancho using Mendy's awareness of Rashford to fake a pass, is of course very plausible.

Another thing that is very plausible is the fact that in the first image I posted (posted again below), you can clearly see that Sancho is looking directly at Rashford as the ball is about to enter the box, and at that point Rashford's foot was already inside the box - and therefore he was ahead of the ball and in an offside position.
It is not disputable that Rashford entered the box before the ball did.

So it could well be that Sancho was fully aware that Rashford was in front of the ball and offside - which ruled out Sancho being able to pass to him.

Exactly what I thought and sums up his game right now.

Dithering, delaying, too much thinking, too many touches.

Very frustrating when you know he can be better.

Forget this one but he goes offiside so many times in so many games but never try to rectify that is very bad..

There is no way that his foot is clearly ahead of the ball in that image. If it is it’s by a tiny tiny distance, which even VAR has been instructed to not be anal about. And that’s based on an image taken when Sancho is continuing his dribble, making Rashford’s position irrelevant.

All these micro analyses are silly anyway. He’s looking along the line and obviously choosing to stay just behind the ball throughout. The fact he never gets ahead of the ball can be clearly seen on all the slo mo replays.

We'll just agree that Sancho made the correct decision*

*to not pass to Rashford

I was disgusted with Rashford's running in the first half - Sancho was putting him to shame as far as tracking back is concerned. Both him and Greenwood need to start tracking their full backs.

Rashford's poor performances get a pass because of his excellent philanthropic work. Earlier in the season, I recall Ole telling Rashford to prioritize football which led to a hissy fit from "Team Rashford", and Ole was forced to publicly backdown. That was not a good look for the manager or the player.

Y'all in this thread are so stupid. I'll explain like you're 5.

When you dribble, you knock the ball in front of you and then you run and catch up with it. High quality dribblers can dribble almost as fast as they run, but generally, and for better control, you slow down a bit before taking the next touch of the ball. And, importantly in this situation, you slow down a little when you're about to pass the ball.

For the goal, Rashford was offside or ridiculously close to being offside every time Sancho was about to touch the ball. He was onside after Sancho had knocked the ball in front of him. Obviously. So every time Sancho is about to touch the ball and has the option to pass, Rashford is either offside or so close to being offside that it basically gave Sancho no choice but to shoot himself.

Posting a picture of Rashford being a few centimetres onside, when the ball is about 3 feet in front of Sancho is meaningless. Obviously. You don't pass the ball when the ball is 3 feet in front of you. You pass the ball when you reach the ball.

Honestly. People. Jeez.
