He's still young and missing a mentor figure, which he's never really had for a reasonable amount of time It would've done him the world of good having someone like Ibra around for another season. He lacks that leadership and big game mentality.

I hope you're right but I wonder if he thinks he has arrived. We're not winning anything with Rashford as our main striker.

It happens trust me, just when a player is that focused on themselves and their own personal glory, it clouds their better judgement. Rashford is a great player, he just needs to stop trying so hard to do it himself, start playing simple football again.

He doesn't strike me as a player who would ignore the advice of his manager and coaches, but who knows? Either he's never been told he over-complicates things or he ignores the advice. Sometimes I'm amazed at the choices he makes, he gave a free kick to Gomes tonight which doesn't fit a greedy player, Ronaldo would have never given his free-kick away for example. So is it possible no one is critical of him in the coaching staff?

Missed easy chances and lost me money, bstrd ha.. Seriously though, Rashford is a quality player but needs to keep a better level of performance. It's nice scoring goals in big games but he needs to be clinical against everyone.

It's shambolic how the club decide him to be our club representative replacing Wayne Rooney and gave him 25 goals per season striker wage. I don't care about his age , there is no guarantee he can be a world beater when he gets older, with all due respect , he is one of the dumbest footballer i have ever seen ,if i had his physical attributes such as speed , stamina , his ball control , i am sure i would be a better footballer. Tammy Abraham who is on the same age would score at least 2 today.

He is being hung out to dry and I could see it coming a mile off. When Jose said he was not good enough as the striker everyone cried. Now everyone is calling Rashford shit. This is what people wanted.

The board and Ole have been irresponsible.

Spot on. I may sound like a broken record given the number of times I've said the following in this forum, but I'm truly convinced that Rashford has a footballing IQ of about 60.

It's not that high

Sell him. Trade him and cash for Son, the sooner the better.

Spurs wouldn't be stupid enough to pay his 200k/wk wage. That's what they give for their world class striker.
And their fans wouldn't be happy either. Not like most of us here when he got that mega wage.

I thought his attitude was right, tried to be a leader but his finishing was poor and not much he tried came off tonight.

He demanded a contract bump.

I doubt the club willingly gave him one.

He needs to perform WAY BETTER.

He's being paid the big bucks.

He's not the main striker though, Martial is that. Rashford is seemingly the main left winger who can play striker, while it looks to me that Martial is the main striker who can play left wing. Nothing wrong with that, and he needed to get the chance eventually. And he's just going through a run of form where his finishing isn't coming off. Today he couldn't really do much different, they were all instinctive reactions that he connected well with but were right at the keeper. Sometimes you'll scuff them instead but they'll go in. Just how it goes.

It's not just how it goes. He is not good enough as a number 9, that's it.

In most matches he won't play as the main striker, he didn't even play the full 90 minutes upfront last night.

Well we do seem to specialise in subsidizing wages.

Ok but he's being asked to be the 2nd #9, while the main one is injured right now? As the backup striker/starting left winger/left forward, I really don't have any problems with him and I think he'll have a very good season in the role he'll have.

He’s the bizarre inverse of a confidence player, in that the more confident he seems, the worse he’s likely to play, and his unparalleled ability to get his head down and run straight into a defender, down a blind alley or just completely out of play increases exponentially...

@Sylar ‘s point about his inability to revert to the simple things when it isn’t running for him is spot on. If anything he doubles down on trying to do the most outlandish thing possible to make up for it, and starts taking terrible shots from all over the shop.. it’s so frustrating because several of his best traits (long range shooting, crossing, dribbling) have the genuine potential to be World Class if he was in anyway consistent with them.... he’s just not. Remotely. Like, at all!

Which would be fine for a regular 21 year old, but he’s not that. He’s a 21 year old entering his 5th season of top flight football, he really needs to be kicking on a bit more now.

The only point of divergence is Big or Small expectations.

Lots of us are MUFC fans and are looking for a WC performance from our starting striker.

Many others are Rashford fans and have the smallest of expectations.

MUFC will win out here, not Rashford's online posse. He must perform or be axed.

He really, really needs to sort his finishing out. I hope it's just a patch of terrible form and once he is out of it, he stays out. I'm starting to get vibes of Welbeck and i don't want that. He still has a couple of years to do it, but the sooner the better.

He is a mediocre player with mediocre talent be it as the left wing forward or striker or whatever.

Another Welbeck, but with Welbeck he at least had the humility and wasn't on freaking 200k/week.

People say he is inconsistent but he does seem consistently crap while managing to do a fifa street move once every 5 games to keep his fans on his side.

A far cry from the quality of Greenwood(though he's way too raw, can see his talent in his touches) and Martial, let alone future world class players like Sancho who are even younger.

His recent performances remind me of Danny Welbeck. Lots of talent, but every shot at the goalkeeper, hitting the woodwork, side of the net, just wide, just over the top. Anywhere but the back of the net. Hopefully he matures beyond this phase.

He is so focused on being the best player in the world, he lost all that goal scoring instinct.

He might have improved in other areas, but finishing? He lost it permanently. He can never be a 25 goal striker if he keep finishing without composure.

Where the feck was his composure when he first broke into the first team?

Feel that same and i have to remind myself that at the same age Ronaldo was even less prolific and then at 22-23 he just turned it on with his finishing and never stopped. Then there is the other option, Welbeck style. We need to keep being patient with Rashford as he has the talent and time to sort it out.

I know a lot of people are exasperated with his free kicks, but he is getting closer and closer. He doesn't have much to improve and he'll be a huge danger. That style of FK is very difficult to get right, but once it's there, it's the most difficult for the keeper to stop. I'm happy to go through some more frustration if the potential reword is a Ronaldo MK 2 in our team when it comes to FK.

Not defending either of them, but I think people should calm down a bit about Martial being much better centre forward than him because he proved absolutely nothing as a centre forward yet, it's been 3 games into this season ffs, and many here have decided that somehow Martial is far better striker than him. Their record for Manchester United is almost identical, Rashford has scored 48 goals in 10895 minutes, and Martial has scored 50 goals in 11579 minutes, with both being shifted central and wide from time to time, and both having mixed performances everywhere and having bad periods through pretty much every season.

In general, Rashford takes more shots per games and has better movement which makes people think he is worse finisher because he generally misses more chances, but pretty much every striker and manager will say that player who gets into good goalscoring chances has a better chance to become better goalscorer in his career. Whether Rashford will improve his finishing or not is another thing, but for now they are basically identical when it comes to scoring for Manchester United, and I really don't see why people see Martial as some safe option as a centre forward when he has other flaws himself.

It's not about the goal's though, if it was about that we could have kept Rom as he scored more than them. The issue is that Rashford sometimes forgets that he is part of a team. You see Martial trying to instigate give and goes whilst Rashford will get the ball and try to do it all by himself. Being a good striker is also about how you connect with the guys around you. If a striker does it the Rashford way they have to be deadly or else they are a liability.

Awful absolutely awful. Missed at least 2 sitters on goal. I forget how many freekicks he took and didnt get one on target. Someone needs to burst this guy's bubble and get him out of the central role. Like an octopus on ice in front of goal

That's slightly over the top. There aren't many 21 year olds putting out world class peformances every week. Problem with Rashford is that being a youth product, the club appears to have put him on a padestal (with a salary to match) that only befits super talents like Rooney of Fabregas. And he's not shown that. I do rate him but ideally he should be a rotational/backup player and paid accordingly subject to further improvement. He definitely needs to work on refining his game and improving the decision making in the final third. Yet he's now a crucial starter and seemingly the face of the club. I wonder if we could have negotiated a better deal with both him and Martial. I mean, would other clubs have offered them similar terms?

But regardless I do rate both of them and have high hopes for them to make it at United. I've always felt they are important for our future and worth investing in (how much is questionable).

Good post. I agree with the general point you are making, yesterday Rashford missed too many chances which happens, especially for young players.

Age is misleading with players starting so young. Ronaldo took 2-3 seasons to settle and progress, and in season 4 it all clicked and he became a genuine world class player. Rashford is starting his 5th season with us now.

Wrong. At 21-22 (the same age) Ronaldo scored and assisted 43 goals and became the best in the country. At 22-23 Ronaldo was the best in the world by then

We desperately need a reliable 20 goal a season striker to mentor and take the pressure off Rashford! Someone like Lewandowski! He looks like he can’t cope with the expectation at this stage

He got into good goalscoring positions which is encouraging. Could've had a hat-trick. He's still just 21 too so all minutes are good for his development. Not particularly bothered that he missed these chances, since most of them weren't really the "sitters" people call them as. They were all difficult finishes.
