Marcos Rojo possible exit

He's apparently on 160k a week, this is why we cant get rid of the dross, because we pay them extortionate wages in relation to their actual worth.

Wish him all the best. He's a decent player but we have higher standards at this club.

Darmain and Jones next please.

Time to give these squad places to TFM, Taunzebe and let them prove thier mettle.

£25m for Rojo . Didn't they at least watch him at the world cup

A formation isn’t really a tactical revolution in itself. A 4-3-3 can easily be a tiki-taka Barca style, or it can be a low-block counter-attacking team like Mourinho’s first Chelsea side.

In any case, playing 4-2-3-1 at Bayern is hardly the most innovative change. Almost every top team at the time played that formation: Liverpool had Gerrard behind Torres, we had Anderson behind Ronaldo in our 09 CL run, etc.

LVG’s 3-5-2 was also an abject failure that he abandoned soon enough. I’d say Conte’s 3-4-3 was far made influential in leading other clubs to adopt a back 3 in the PL.

It doesnt have to be a tactical revolution at all - as he has said previously; his factor is for the club to have a philosophy and that is predominantly of having an pure understanding of how a club should play. His simple use of just a word in saying philosophy actually consiquently made alot of clubs say the exact same thing and think about what type of football they play much more than Conte's pure 343 he bought over from italy. Whilst LVG was trying to implement a philosophy he at one point he linked it to his club playing under the 352. As said by most ex players his problems were that he was overly restrictive with his football (allmost definetly with his inability to buy good players).

As I have said before - even though LVG ditched it due to the players available in his first season (most being old or injured); him finding Rashford & Lingard with Martial upfront - the only way he could have lined them up is by playing two upfront with an AM inbetween. The same season he found a defensive partnership that actually happen to work out yet could have used an extra man for stability ( Smalling & Blind). To this day we have wing backs playing as fullbacks.

Whilst he deserved to lose his job - the following season he simply could not have played 4231, 433 like Jose because he would have to use a combination of 2 players at the very least out the forward line that would not be in their best position; much like they are under Jose right now ( martial, Rashford whilst only Lingard is getting games in his right position).

To this day post LVG, my opinion is - still the best formation to play is 352. Not 343. not 4231. Not 433.

Thats got hardly anything to do with LVG especially when we incorporate pogba, lukaku, bailly etc; but there is a core understanding that arises from us as a club playing 352 that simply is not there when we play 4231. We may grind more games through but as a team we look more solid and as a unit as 352. I'm not willing to believe it has no influence what so ever; players like lingard, rashford, martial, TFM and others have much more ability to be involved and perform in a 352 than a 4231 (never mind the tactical improvements I can see Pogba, Lukaku & bailly playing within a 352).

I have a feeling the moment Jose is brave enough or simply moves on to a different job - the next formation we will see is the 352. There is a shape there within the squad yet there is a need for improvement on quality.

  • Do we go for ball playing CB's? If so how many? What does three at the back enable us to do/more defensive or more offensive? Do we have one ball playing defender covered by 2 traditional CB's or the other way around
  • Do we go stick for wing backs over full backs?
  • Do we go for 2 strikers over one? I'd say as pure Strikers we as a club have easily one of the best collection in the world; to play one upfront is shooting ourselves in the foot.
  • How do we play midfielders on the basis that we have 3 cbs? To this day Pogba gets to play in a midfield 2 better with protection that comes behind him - in this case an extra defender.
I could go on for ages - however there is a shape there both due to LVG & Jose. However the 4231 will be overtaken by the 352 post Jose; that to me is not a doubt.

I had forgotten that he signed Valdes .. Another keeper on a free.. Another signing that didnt work out.. at all..

Not gonna believe that Rojo gets 160k a week. Are we expected to believe that he gets fifth highest wages in the squad after Pogba DDG lukaku and Sanchez? More than mata jones smalling valencia Young etc who’ve been here longer?

I like rojo, think hes a good defender and more reliable than Jones. If we are signing a new defender its a decent fee for him and wont be the end of the world but id be a bit sorry to ser him go. I like jones but he would be my choice of defender to sell due to injuries and equal number of calamities as rojo

First Rojo, the remnants of LvG's left-sided CB must be left-footed.

Next one should be Jones. I understand that he is injury-prone player and when fit he is pretty good CB, but I am still baffled by some aspects of his game that never seem to be ironed out even after all these years (e.g THAT tackle against Hazard in FA Cup Final). That is rookie CB play.

Last but not least is Smalling. Despite some of his weaknesses, he is pretty reliable compared to the other two, and he scored important goals too ('member that game vs Citeh?) Yes, he is supposedly lacking that leadership qualities, but if United make the right acquisition, he could be a good partner to that experienced-with-leadership-quality-CB. Bailly can fight with Lindelof and earn that starting places.

Pity, I like Rojo ... or I did, I'll probably hate him when we play him, the dirty bugger. There'd be a few cb's higher on my list to move on but meh ... none are that irreplaceable. Good luck to him anyway.

We need to shift 'last gasp' Jones out of the team with him. The guys more of a liability than Rojo.

25m for Rojo ?!!!
There should be another topic:
“I don’t understand Wolves’ transfer strategy”

He'll be a beast for Wolves if he goes there. Wolves are certainly an intriguing entity this season. Gonna be interesting seeing how they fare.

Jose’s quietly getting rid of all the shite LVG brought in, After all the money spent, who’d have thought his best signing ended up being free.

To be fair Rojo has been half decent. Before his injury he was looking like our most reliable defender. Admittedly be was not great for some time leading up to that, but very few United defenders settle in instantly..

It also makes him second highest paid CB in the league, which is obvious nonsense. It's just Luckhurst doing what he does best, shit stirring.

Here it is,
Van Gaal is understood to be far from impressed by the 25-year-old's mishap and will fine him two week's wages for failing to join up with the rest of the squad as the club continues to prepare for the start of the Premier League season

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal is to slap a massive £140,000 fine on defender Marcos Rojo.

So he was on 70K per week before new contract.

20 million for Ings. The world has gone inane

Maybe someone will bid 30 for Elneny and 10 for Jenkinson... Any takers?

I love Rojo and I love his attitude, but 25 million is a lot. I'd take that.

Why are people so surprised by the 25 million fee?
PL clubs are fecking loaded, Liverpool sold their 3rd choice keeper from 12 million or something.

Micheal Keane was sold to Everton last year for 30 million, he had one good season.
Lucas Digne, a flop at PSG, Roma and at Barca us being bought by Everton for a fee between 18-22 mill Euros
Yerry Mina, who was bought by Barca 6 months back from the Brazilian league, was average for them, has zero experience at the highest level is about to be sold for nearly 30 million pounds after one good WC

Rojo isn't worse than any of those defenders. He's in his prime, an Argentina International, experienced at the highest level and was very good in the Europa League we won. He had one serious injury and has been struggling a bit after that, but he's worth 25 million easily.
He can bring the ball forward from defense, he's a good header of the ball and he can play LB.
He may not be WC, but he is certainly far from a poor player.

25mil is good fee for us but if the roles were reversed and we were looking for a back up left back and back up center back who played for Wolves, we'd be paying quite a bit more for him.

Articles like this keep saying that United need to sell Player A and Player B before trying to sign Player C. I saw another that said Levy will enter the market when other clubs are done spending...

Do these journalists not realise the transfer market ends in less than 2 weeks? If the club wants a player, they have to do it now. Like, right now. Worry about sales later

Great fee we would be getting for him. I just hope it means that we are bringing someone in.

Still would like to get rid of one of jones / smalling and give Axel some more minutes.

If we can get 25m for 28 year old Marcos Rojo, reportedly on 160k a week wages.... fecking hell, i'd be over the moon!

He's had some good moments for us but should never be part of a team looking to get back to the very top. Out of our current CB options, him and Jones are the ones I'd be most happy with letting go.

People forget that Smalling ans Jones are both English. That's the main reason imo that they're here, and are not gonna be sold.
