Unpopular opinion but I rate Rojo as a CB, and that's mainly down to the good run of form he had in LvG's first season. Which seems to have been forgotten about. His main problem is his concentration. Shame we've rarely seen games like this where he has a calm head in defence and his ability to pass the ball really well and break lines is on show. Just keep him away from LB.

I'm not going to get sucked in by one half decent performance but when he doesn't drop a bollock for 90mins does not mean he had an amazing game. I thought he did well. He needs to cut the Rio-esque long balls out. Seem's to panic in possession and just give it the boot.

I've been a big critic of him in the past, but that was a decent performance. He hasn't played at CB for so long that I've forgotten what he's like there.

Just never play at LB again.

Agree with others, decent performance but my god how many times did he just hoof it lol. It was getting ridiculous.

I'll give him benefit of the doubt though. Maybe once/if he is giving more game time, he'll try to pass it around more.

He has a real fight to him that our other cbs lack. He also seems to love playong for united. As a left back he is too awkward for me, not agile enough and no way to beat his man. His crossing is ok though.

Not that I'm saying Rojo is a legitimately good player of the ball, but I think that was a Jose strategy. I guess we'll see in the coming days - if Smalling doesn't walk back into the team.

Yep. After the "first station" debacle of the first derby match, it's no surprise Rojo booted it at every opportunity. I actually think his short pass isn't that bad. At least he passes with purpose and pings the ball to the receiver's feet.

He might have hoofed it a bit too often this game, but he's a far better passer than Smalling.

Delighted with his performance tonight.

I'm a massive fan of his. Better than Smalling in my eyes. Smalling relies on his physicality... take that away and he's rubbish. Rojo is by far the better footballer.

But I'll try not to turn this into another Smalling vs Rojo debate. I think theres no way Smalling can be considered for the Starting 11 against Burnley after that performance against Chelsea. Rojo deserves the nod after tonight. We need to reward those who fight for their place in the team.

No..no...just praise his perfomance without making the comparision. You know that will end badly as soon as he fecks up like he has consistently done. Just say he had a nice game which he did.

Except he rarely fecks up. Unlike Smalling who cost us 3 goals on Sunday, got sent off in the FA Cup final and nearly cost us the match, cost David De Gea his golden glove in the final game of the season by scoring an own goal, and also got a red card against City which cost us the game in LVG's first season. Thats just 4 instances off the top of my head that everyone would still hold against Rojo if the tables were turned.

But apparently Rojo's positioning was off one time he was playing out of position at LB and therefore he's completely shite and should be sold.... Or something.

Ok dude...a little objectivity please. There is a reason why Rojo's avarage rating is 4.6. He had a good game. We hope this continues, but lets stop acting like he hasnt been a dissapointment since he was bought. Did you say "he rarely fecks up?"

so the coaches have been overlooking him by mistake or do you think they have something against him?

Must be the haircuts... or tatts... or being Argentinian because no Argie lasts at United....

The scenes here if Rojo gets a testimonial or, better yet, captain's armband in the future

Really wary about the Caf's newfound optimism on Rojo. Now watch him get torn apart again the moment he fecks up.

The Caf have some weird hatred towards him. Not sure what it stemmed from but when he first arrived here, there was a lot of optimism about him.

LVG was certainly overlooking him. He played Blind at CB infront of him for the entire season. There was a sextape scandal involving him and I suspect thats when LVG became sour on him.

I can't remember Rojo ever costing us a game. Yes, he fecks up quite often for a defender. But through a combo of his agility, relentlessness and admittedly luck, those mistakes are often cleaned up by himself or someone else.

Smalling's top level is higher. On his day, he's a legitimate Top 6-7 defender in the world, yet his floor is also the lowest for any defender considered elite in world football. His mistakes often directly cost points.

Probably on account of his performances. played well yesterday but good performances from Rojo are hard to come by.

You bring up a valid argument. Personally, I'd not have him in the team as a starter and I still rate Smalling much higher, but the Caf does have a ton of animosity/hatred against him, for little reason. He's an Argentine international, we have as backup in our squad for the LB and CB positions - not a bad player to have as backup at all.

Fine if he was bought as a first choice player. He hasn't quite fulfilled that role - nor do I think, over the course of a 38 game league campaign, is he good enough as a starter anyway. But he's a decent squad option and I think he cost a similar amount to Blind which isn't over the top expensive, IMO. (though Blind's been much more impressive of the 2, again, IMO.)

And on the bolded bit, what is his true/actual/best position? I always had him pegged as a LB, who could do a job at CB - but that's because I mainly watched him for Argentina. I know at Sporting he was predominantly used at CB.

Probably the best I've ever seen him play for us... he was comfortably better then Blind.

He still does a lot of things as if he's about to shit his pants... and he inspires as much confidence in me as a tissue paper tent.. but yeah, fine performance.

I think LvG brought him in for his ability to play LB, and LWB on top of CB.

Best performance ive seen from him last night. Has a tendency to just hoof it clear but lets not lose sight that sometimes that is exactly what is required. Pep, Stones, Bravo etc are trying to redefine what a defenders remit is but sometimes a hoofed clearance when youve got a prescence like Zlatan and runners off him, like Pogba, serves two purposes - clearing danger and causing a bit of havoc in the final third.

That's because he usually has very little fight in him. You see players who lose the ball even in attack end up putting in hard yards to charge down and win it back but he casually gives up when that happens with him. He has the ability on the ball and athleticism to be a decent defender but its more or less the lack of fight in him that concerns everyone.

He shouldn't play at LB, he is a CB and played quite well defensively and very well distribution wise, reminded me a bit of John Stones..

Our LB's should be: Shaw, Blind, Darmian
RB's: Valencia, TFM, Darmian
CB's: Bailley, Smalling, Blind, Rojo, Jones

Yes, yes, very good last night. I still don't like him, for some irrational reason I can't really express, and I don't believe he's good enough, but if he keeps playing like that I'll happily revise my stance before long.

Thought he done really well last night, looked decent when he 1st arrived playing at CB till he hurt his shoulder i think v city away, after Smalling's horror show and Bailly's injury might be a chance for him to step up at the CB position.

He did well last night, I've definitely not been a fan, but it's always great to be proved wrong!

I admit he's my least favourite player at United at the moment - but it was a great performance - couldn't believe that it was Rojo. It brought back memories that he did well when he first joined, then he got injured and got shunted out to left back, where 9/10 games, he is horrible. Would not mind him staying at CB at all - just no more games at left back please.

Can anyone really remember a bad Rojo performance at centre back? I'm sure he's had one but I can't really recall it.

May I ask, he played as LCB or RCB last night?

Right side, might be an unpopular opinion but i actually think he's a decent CB it's at LB where he's an accident waiting to happen. With Bailly out would like to see him get a run at CB.

He played on the left. Blind played on the right, which might be why I think Blind's passing was so uneventful despite having some time on the ball.

Wierd isn't it how when you play a player in their best position they play better than when you try and fit a square peg into a round hole.

I bet Rojo is also a rubbish #10 and AMR and I also reckon Lionel Messi wouldn't be upto much at CB or RB

How would Vidic or John Terry have got on at LB do we think?

I thought he did well last night.

Best game Rojo has had since the home derby last season.

He had a good game, and I don't think he is the unmitigated disaster that people often say he is. On the evidence of this season, Bailly is the only sure pick at CB, which leaves Smalling, Blind and Rojo (and Jones...) to fight it out for the other spot. Smalling is taller and stronger than Rojo, but significantly worse in possession, and has a worrying tendency to shirt grab. Blind is unsurprisingly the best passer of the three by some distance, and reads the play well. He's my personal preference to partner Bailly, despite his oft-mentioned physical shortcomings.

Rojo isn't as physically imposing as Smalling, but more confident in possession, and the reverse when comparing him to Blind. So he's got the potential to stake a claim for a starting berth.

It's also interesting that he hasn't let his head drop or shrink away from the pressure, like some others in the squad.

Nothing can be better than a player with whom nobody counts to cut it here will finally step up... too soon to make any conclusions, he always looked a bit too rash and not focused enough on the game with a a positional mistake to happen but that moght be quite normal for a player who never got a run at two CBs defense as CB. We need him to perform now so hopefully he can show us all we were wrong

My memory is that he looked fine (quite good, even) playing at centre-back up until his shoulder injury at City in his first season - it's left-back I've never been comfortable with him playing, that always seems like a mistake waiting to happen.

Given our defensive options are quite limited just now, I would be fine with giving him a run at centre-back.

Not sure if this has been posted here before. MUTV documentary about Marcos Rojo.
