I think there's a footballer in him as a CB. Apparently he looked out of place at LB for Sporting, and no surprise it only got worse against better opposition in the PL.
It's not hard to be comfortable when all you do is hoof it forward every time. Smalling at least tries to keep possession

Never had issues with him at CB. It's when he's at LB and goes up the pitch and gives the ball away and then casually jogs back Evra style is when he's incredibly infuriating.
Credit where it's due - he was brilliant today. His passing out from the back was very good.

Call me crazy but in his first season he was pretty decent when he played as a CB. Usually with Smalling I think.

He played well all things considering. He was played alongside McNair, Blackett, Evans etc. LB is where he plays badly.
