He wasn't great yesterday, nor was he bad. Mou is the right manager for him and if he keeps it up, that's 40-60m saved next summer for another defender. I guess it's just standard RedCafe behavior to pin the blame on the Spanish speaking contingent, so I'm waiting for the inevitable 'I told you he's shit' posts to come once he hits a rough patch, but for now I'm enjoying this. I've always had faith in Rojo.

Redcafe has come a long way from hailing Smalling as the second coming of Beckenbauer at the start of last season, to preferring Rojo at LCB when available, this season.

Some people actually started to call him Smallingbauer, talk about RAWK-ish

I thought he was excellent. Pogba has 50 of those shite shots a game so can't complain for him having a go.

I'm purely speculating here but isn't he asked to play as a super defensive full back for Argentina? That's the only way I could see him work in that position

in the world cup he and Blind were top 2 in chance creation from LB positions. So he wasnt a defensive fullback then. Havent bothered to watch argentina much since then though

That's so wrong I don't know where to start.

LMAO where do I start? Aside from De Gea, we've had:

Di Maria - I guess the hate is justifiable
Falcao - Loan, but people still moaned to no end
Rafael - Had his defenders here, but people seem to blame him for being injury prone
Mata - 'not a United player', 'can't compete with Mata as a key player', 'even in Chelsea's CL win, he was a passanger'
Herrera - Well loved in his first year, soured in his second year but still got blamed for LVG pulling him out of the lineup after a good game
Rojo - see this thread

When shit hits the fan, it's always the Spanish speaking contingent that gets the brunt of the blame. Especially post Fergie. I call it the Di Maria/Tevez effect

Difference is we had them pinned back with 3 minutes remaining. Trying a shot from that far out shows how stupid he is.

He had a good game apart from that, but clearly not the cleverest.

Why are people bashing Rojo. He took one long range shot and his long range shots aren't that bad, that he shouldn't be allowed. His long range shot vs Chelsea stretched Courtois the most and would have been a goal against nearly every other GK

The fact he's been decent last two games doesn't hide the fact he's been horrible since signing. He has no credit in the bank as far as I'm concerned.

And no one disagrees with that, but he hasn't done anything wrong in the last two games to get bashing for those 2 specific games

Gets an unfair amount of criticism on here, you aren't an Argentinian regular without some quality.

It's understandable to be critical but I think he's more a center back then full back. Is he a great CB? That's to be seen. He sure ain't a full back that's for sure and that's mostly where we've seen him...

Which is true but as others have said, based on the two games hes done well.
Also I like Smalling, but not as LCB hah.

He's certainly no full back, he's had a fair few good games at CB over the last few years. His biggest issue is he's pretty average there as well.

Maybe he should start showing it! Because he's been horrible since signing.

No he wasn't. He was solid, nothing spectacular but not bad, during his first 8-10 games for us. It was after he got Van Gaal'd that he started playing like he was afraid to make mistakes - sounds familiar doesn't it?

He should be fined for that shot. Moronic. Solid enough otherwise though, but obviously was hardly tested.

He's good enough for these kinds of game, but you can put Tuanzebe out there and get the same thing. The test to determine whether he's good enough will come in away games and games with high defensive pressure.

I remember when he first came here, hearing how he was a fantastic CB from Sporting, and was the same quality of player as Matic. There is some talent in this lad. Unfortunately he has not used it. It's really time for him to step up in the hour of need and prove his worth.

Rafael doesn't speak Spanish. I guess they all sound the same to you...

Didn't realise that Fellaini and Rooney were spanish, as I'm fairly sure they have been blamed far more than any of those other names. It has nothing to do with being Spanish, every player gets slated when we play poorly unless they are playing really well individually.

Its not so much the Spanish speakers but more so the South American curse. Veron, Forlan, Kleberson, Heinze, Tevez, Ando, Di Maria, Falcao etc.

I don't think Rojo will be in that category as he seems a bit more settled in England.

Hardly tested? Their counters were actually very good. Vokes and gray tried their best but to no much success

He is a 6/10 player who can occasionally drop below that level especially if he is at left back, but will not exceed that level. Should be 4th choice in an ideal world

No it wasn't he was terrible both Smalling and Blind excelled under LVG.

Not really. He had a good first season. Solid and unspectacular.

He had a good first season? That is laughable so I give up if that's our standards for a good first season we should hopefully get in the top 10.

One off target shot near the end of the game does not make his entire performance bad.

I thought he played really well against Burnley. We will be needing him whilst Bailly is out so hopefully he can continue to build on that good performance. Happy with him and Darmian.

Hardly a strange phenomenon, this - a Centre Back finally being played in the Centre Back berth and putting in decent performances (if IMHO hardly the stuff of legend). Who would have thought it, eh?

No he didn't. You are thinking of Evans. Rojo was probably one of our better CBs.

No I'm not but yes Evans had a poor season. But Rojo is honking the place out and I don't have much faith in him here.

Whenever LVG used him as a CB, I always thought he looked half decent. Dynamic, super in the air.. aggressive and pacey. Has a brain fart in him but he looks twice the player there than he does at LB where he is so average it hurts.

One more CB in Jan, and Bailly, New CB, Smalling/Blind, Rojo is strong CB cover. Jones needs to be sold though, useless cnut.

He played well today but wasn't really tested.

Gray is quite a tough opponent to deal with. Plus I'd say in a game like that where your team is bombing on like crazy, can be quite difficult for CB's to deal with that pressure of one mistake being fatal. He done well to handle that.

No it wasn't he was terrible both Smalling and Blind excelled under LVG.

Not Smalling initially, in fact many people wanted him sold after the Red against City. While Blind wasn't immediately a CB - McNair, Blackett, Evans and Jones also got chances.

I'll give you Fellaini, but the amount of abuse Rooney got pales in comparison to the Spanish/Latin contingent, especially considering how bad he's been through the last two seasons.

We're too quick to write off certain players. Rojo was never as bad as the Caf made out to be. Even when he was at LB. There's a reason Zidane was rumored to be interested in buying him in the summer.

Darmian is suffering the same faith. We're not patient enough.

Spot on.

I'm not a fan of his at all but I actually thought he had possibly one of his best games for the club at the weekend.

I think Rojo will be a relevation at CB this season. Hopefully I'm right cause I'm a massive fan of his and I don't want to see him get dropped again. We've been lacking a good CB partnership for ages now but Bailly-Rojo has potential.

Still think we might need an established big "physical" CB in the mold of Thiago Silva, Pepe, Miranda, etc though.

I think Rojo can be that big physical enforcer, just based on the eye test, he fits the bill. Hopefully, Jose can introduce him to one of his old students like Materazzi
