Marco Verratti

If you're talking about the 75% tax, it doesn't exist. At least not yet, and many people doubt it will ever come through.

If it did, it would theoretically affect the players quite badly (well the ones like Zlatan, not most of them actually, you have to be earning a shitload to be affected by it), but I don't doubt they won't ever pay any of it. Either cos their revenue isn't entirely perceived in France, either cos the club will pay it for them. I doubt you need to worry about them!

He's more Makélélé than Pirlo, for me but a terrific talent nevertheless.

I wondered how he'd make the transition from small town Pescara star to playing in Paris alongside millionaire signings but those doubts are surely laid to rest now. I found it a strange move to begin with so no telling where his or his agent's ambitions lie but future definitely looks bright for the young talent who seems to be unfazed by all of it

You create a galactico policy at a club then expect the up & coming talents to want to be paid accordingly, as well. It doesn't breed competitiveness but greed, IMO.

Bodes well for Prandelli and I imagine him & Pirlo could end up playing alongside one another for WC14

Yeah I get what you mean, but for me it's actually a bit of both, his long distance distribution is pretty impressive, but he's got a real feisty side to him that makes you think of the more gritty DMs such as Makélélé. Makélélé at his best was brilliant with his use of the ball, of course, but Verratti seems to have slightly better vision on the field which is why I get the Pirlo comparisons. Not that he's anywhere near both of those players yet, but the potential seems huge.

I don't want to get dragged into this one. The mere thought of us signing Verratti is making me somewhat aroused. We'd actually have a midfield talent on Wilshere/Thiago kind of levels.

Was looking forward to seeing him play.. shame Becks started

The thing is he's still young and a bit rash at times, he usually gets a booking every game, maybe Ancelotti was afraid he'd get it early and then be a bit handicapped for the remainder of the game. Also, the gameplan for PSG was quite clear (in the first half at least), pick up the ball low and chuck it forward, and take profit of set pieces; Beckham therefore made sense, especially as he was partnered with Matuidi who's capable of running around and doing a huge defensive job in midfield.

With Matuidi suspended for the return game, wonder whether Ancelotti will go for Beckham and Verratti in midfield.

Not sure about these Pirlo or Makelele comparisons, Verratti seems to me to be a classic, all-round central midfielder, rather than the defensive or creative specialists that have populated the game in recent years.

Is he better than Cleverley?

Technically yes IMO, but maybe not quite as versatile.

Dont think he could play off the wing or cross a ball like tom, but his overall ball retention / distribution is better.

His ball retention is better? That's saying something, if true.

Yep, i know it does not mean alot but look at the cameo against barca, when pressed he seems alot more comfortable on the ball, where as clev can get a little panicky and get caught on it sometimes.

To be honest there is not a lot in it, i think his recent form is clouding our judgement slightly as he is better than hes showed recently.

I think he just seems too small, unfortunately. I know it is overstated but in his case it might not be.

Perhaps, but then again he is facing 6 foot plus black giants in the french league in CM every week, and its fair to say they hardly get near him.

Which unfortunately is the case for almost all of our players.

Yep, really would like us to train harder on pressing situations.

Perhaps that footballnaut or whatever its called that dortmund have we should invest in, no doubt it would help us improve.

He came on in the 70th against Barcelona in the Champions League; hardly a cameo.

Isnt the term cameo a "bit part role"?

I would say playing 20 minutes of a possible 90 a bit part.

But yeah in that 20 minutes or so he showed why he is rated so high.

What has impressed the most about him in all the matches I've seen from him is how cool and calm he is when put under pressure.

Basic requirement for a top class midfielder these in todays game.

What has their skin colour got to do with their size?

Maybe he has checked all of the players in the league and has seen that there is no player who isn't black and above 6ft, that or we know what ...

Or perhaps you are trying to make something out of nothing.

how many "big powerful" white midfielders do you know in ligue 1?

You could name a handful "big powerful" black African cm from ligue 1. No need to get stupid about it.

Are we even interested? Or are we just discussing over nothing because I'm now quite excited by him having watched his youtube videos. Why does it seem that every midfielder could easily slot into our midfield nicely? Verratti, Strootman, Wanyama, Eriksen, Bender, Gundogen..the list goes on.

Because it's the sad truth that our midfield has fallen so much that pretty much any good (as in a good for a top 7 team) central midfielder could be an automtic starter in our midfield (although not sure on Wanyama slotting in our midfield nicely, haven't seen him apart from the game against Juve). And yet there is no value in the market, while we see players like Sahin go to Madrid for 6 million, Gundogan to Dortmund for under 4 million, Dembele to Spurs for 10, Verratti to PSG for 10 million.
It really is ridiculous, there's been so many great deals for central midfielders who would be ideal for us, and yet, somehow we haven't even been rumoured to sign any of them (apart from Dembele, but those were never serious rumours). To make it worse, our most promising midfielder that we had left us as well!

In all seriousness I know a lot of them.
