That's why I think we still need a midfielder in addition to him. We don't even need to keep Sabitzer (although I think ETH likes him). Personally, I'd go for a player like Paulinha.
No I get your point but I’d like to us go for two midfielders who can help dictate play. And since Sabitzer looks nothing like that player I wouldn’t need keep him unless he shows something really great in the coming months.

The way I see it we have:
- Casemiero : Excellent defensively. Can pass it well in transition but not a controller and is prone to a loose pass is pressured
- Eriksen : Brilliant intelligence and eye for a creative pass but physicality is low now and used to playing as an AM
- Fred : Superb at harrying opponents, has everything is his locker but sometimes plays like a nervous 17 year old
- Bruno : Incredible engine and match deciding qualities but at times erratic all round game

So aside from Eriksen who is probably the most assured at controlling games but also a bit lacking in physicality and more comfortable as an AM, our main issue is lack of high Quality passers in deep areas who can pull the strings or whose quick feet gets them out of a high press. It probably explains the FDJ chase so well too.

He doesn't have to fill anyone's role next year. He can simply be Sabitzer - the Bayern Munich player. We could still buy yet another midfielder to add more depth.

We don’t have the numbers for all that.

We just don’t need him.

We need a new 8 and a covering 6. That’s it.

Bottom line - if ETH likes what he offers and the player is amenable, then we keep him. At the end of the day its up to the manager and player.

Steve Clarke things he's best as CB. ETH think he's a DM. Many here thing he's best as an #8 and a few even thing he's better at #10. 26 years old and still a mystery.

I think it's irrelevant as I don't rate him as good enough for United in any of those positions. I'd take Sabitzer over McTominay at #8 and I wouldn't particularly want either of them as a #6.

EDIT: Back to Sabitzer, if Fred leaves then I'd take him as #8 option in his place. Otherwise there's no point. Then Eriksen can be backup to Bruno, a better #8 can claim the starting spot and a younger #6 can be signed to deputise for Case.
He's a nice guy, and a top professional, but I don't think he's good enough for the league, let alone United. But his natural talents make him most effective somewhere between 8 and 10. I don't think Ten Hag thinks of him as a DM, Ole did, and maybe gave ETH that impression, but when ETH plays him there it's out of desperation, when he brings him on as a sub it's usually more as an 8 or 10.

You keep saying this

He was a loan option who I’m sure ETH is very thankful for in this heavy period. But ETH has given us zero indication he is part of his future plans Either through his mouth or leaks from the club.

I keep saying it because its a distinct possibility.

Just like there's a possibility we keep Weghorst because, despite being a hopelessly ineffective striker, he can play a role that ETH values in terms of his pressing and has the attitude he is looking for. Sabitzer is in the same category.

Let’s hope that doesn’t happen too:wenger:. But I get your point.

IF we can't get a Bellingham,Bennacer or Barella type player to partner Casa then not against signing him, however if we can then get Rabiot as cheap backup for Casa. Think he can also play as an 8 too which is beneficial

There's a good chance we're going to sell McTominay and possibly Van de Beek as well. There's room in the squad for the jewel thief.

Have to say its a sign of progress that a lot of fans are turning their nose up at Sabitzer

I think he'd be a good squad option. More suited to attacking roles but very competent in a defensive role based on what ive seen....

It depends on factors like budget, impact of takeover, availability of targets, potential of Hannibal

Ten Hag will make the right choice.

I will say Sabitzer has shown a lot more than Donny and McTominay - both of whom are similarly better in attacking or box to box in McTs place

Players like Donny, McTominay, Maguire should be moving on.....

Wouldn't cost anything as free agent in summer

He would demand signing bonus which would be closer to the signing fee for the Sabitzer.
Probably thats the reason Rabiot does not extend contract at the clubs.

I must agree with buckooo on this point. No doubt there's a case to be made that Sabitzer isn't a specialist in anything that we should thank him and let him go, but for there's always room for a highly competent all-rounder like Sabitzer. Think of him as a 6 (rating that is) in all aspects of play, rather than a 7 or 8 in any one aspect of play but a 4 or 5 in other aspects of play. The rebuttal to that would be that we need a 7 in all aspects of play, not a 6, and I'd say fine...but exactly who is that going to be who slot in as a squad man after we pick up the masterful 8 we all know we have to bring in? Some young players perhaps, but we actually have some of those young players like Mainoo. But Mainoo isn't ready to step into the role that Sabitzer is ready to step into. We have Casemiro, we will find our answer to the 8 problem (not Frenkie, but someone else) and we have Bruno. We'll have Eriksen to serve as cover for the 8 and 10 roles and we need someone with experience to provide cover in the 6 and 8 roles.

So who we have and what we want...

Have:
Casemiro: CDM and quality
Fred: Box-to-box and high energy but lacks quality
Eriksen: 8/10 quality on the ball but lacks physicality
Bruno: 10 and quality
McT: Unsure and lacks quality but great engine
DvB: 10? but just does not seem to fit United
Sabitzer: 8ish seems a great squad addition

Want:
The box to box answer... Bellingham, FDJ... whoever but with Bruno and Casemiro we could dominate
Back up CDM for Casemiro, but probably needs to wait a summer as we need the #8 and a striker.

What I would love next season...

CDM: Casemiro/ Sabitzer
8: Bellingham/Fred
10: Bruno/Eriksen

Sell : McT and DvB

This would dominate games and provide cover for rotation. Then we could look for a young CDM for the future next summer, while allowing us to go after a striker to join our new #8 immediately.

Despite the possible take over and despite the possibility we actually bring in some decent transfer sales this summer......we have a high net spend over the last few seasons.

So either we possibly keep Sabitzer and/or Weighorst as cheap deals to fill out the squad OR we end both loans so any available money goes to what the first team needs.

You are right I guess it could go either way as they provide a role in the side and Wieghorst coudl be more likely as really I feel we may need TWO strikers this summer.

I think we need to sign a central midfielder to be starting in the side in the summer....but we do still have Eriksen, Fred, McTominay, VDB, Mainoo, Hannibal, Casemeiro....even if as expected a couple of those names leave, for me there are plenty of options if a big signing is made, really dont think Sabitzer is needed.

Up front if Martial goes and Greenwood doesnt come back there are literally zero options...........but being bluntly harsh, what beyong work rate has Weighorst offered goals, link up, pace, diverting runs to free up space, movement, aerially........he has offered very little and looks out of his depth here. We were desperate for a cheap option up front with the ROnaldo departure, I would genuinely be staggered if Weighorst is still here next summer, evern on a free, see very little chance of either being here next season

This was coming he barely got a sniff at bayern. They're crowded with world-class talent there so hardly a surprise.

10-15M should be enough if we're interested.
Bayern is also bringing in Laimer for next season. At least that is what strong rumors indicate.

What I would love next season...

CDM: Casemiro/ Sabitzer
8: Bellingham/Fred
10: Bruno/Eriksen
So you'd love Sabitzer as backup cdm to Casemiro - even though when we literally need a backup cdm right now Sabitzer is played nowhere near that position. In fact he's hardly ever played there in his career and it's clear he doesn't have the tools to do that job.

Unfortunately we not only need an upgrade at 8, but a reliable 6 as a backup to Case. And as Sabitzer is neither and our budget still being limited by FFP, I'd rather we didn't spend a precious £15-20m on a squad filler.

I am not disagreeing with you.

But if we sell McT *AND* we buy a striker and an 8, we might have to jury rig for a year.

Long term totally agree we need a young CDM for Casemiro rotation and eventual replacement.

Only one sentence. If not De Jong this summer then Stanislav Lobotka shall be pick over Sabitzer

Stanislav Lobotka > Sabitzer & Eriksen

Stanislav Lobotka is clearly on a consistent higher level than Sabitzer. Both football skill and mentality.

Ain’t dominating nothing. Send him back don’t care what the sentimental fans want to say or what the possession stats say.

Nice player but not what we need.

He'll probably thrive in the right formation/partnership but next to Mctomminay he looks understandably lost.

Not just next to McTom. Next to Bruno as well. Seems like they have some sort of competition going on where the winner is the player who spends the least time at the centre of the pitch...

Playing with 3 midfielders who are all number 8/10 type players- none of which are possession type players - not really shocking we are lacking control and stability in the midfield.

No player works with McTominay.

Are we trying to win the league or make excuses for rotating average with average.

He’s just a rubbish at McTominay whether he plays with or without him.

Nice guy but not the quality we need. We are a football team, not a social club. Being nice is not absolutely necessary.

You could rewrite that with the names switched around.

He's not though. If you think McT doesn't adversely affect the performances of his peers then I can't help you, but its evident that he does.
