Manuel Neuer

Van der Sar in Dutch press:"Utd have made their decision [on new goalkeeper]. It's not Neuer, but more than that I can't say."

Did he mention Neuer? From what I've read yesterday in the Dutch press, he only said Utd have already made their decision on who will be his successor but won't say who it is, no mention about Neuer at all.

The most expensive keeper after Buffon cost 10.5m and that was a long time back as well. Keepers generally arent as expensive as outfield players

Yes, times have changed and players are a lot more expensive now, but still given that he has just 12(14) months left on his contract and has said that he will be leaving, 24m is crazy money for Neuer

Shouldnt have generalized it to any keeper, but the others we have been linked to are all under 20m (the most expensive being de gea at 17.5m who has a long term contract with at. mad).
stekelenburg, who mulensteen said was our #1 target a few months back, shouldnt cost that much either.

I'm surprised I'm the only one here who thinks 24m for someone who has declared his intention to leave and is nearing the end of his contract would be excessive

Great keeper, if we can afford it then great. I just dont think it's happening if thats the asking price for him

Man, that figure is one which might outbid Bayern - feck all logic about goalkeepers value, its undervalued imo anyway. If we pay £30m i wouldnt give a feck, can you imagine how many games he could win for us?!

I'll even chuck a tenner into the hat aswell

Anyone think VDS will have a say in who our next GK is?

I wonder who his first choice would be?

Neuer, De Gea have a lot of press attention but somehow I feel we will go for someone slightly off the radar.

Look at our best GK signings -Schmeichel and VDS both were low key transfers.

Disagree,

I'm actually sure that at some stage it was reported that VDS had been asked his opinion and thoughts on the matter.

Of course Edwin will be asked his opinion, he's still one of the best in the world and hugely experienced, and presumably cares about the future of the club.

24m for a keeper.. no thanks

Primitive. Keepers, it has come to be found are as important as your play maker or whatever important player you think is worth 24m or more.
Keeper like Neuer can save you from dropping like 15 points a season.

Exactly, I've never understood the logic that some people have about spending money on a keeper.
I think it comes from the play ground, usually the least skillful is asked to stay in goal. As a results most of us grow up not respecting the position.

He would be given the coaching role without a doubt but I highly doubt he will influence any decisions as to who we get to replace him.

Going by yesterday's report VDS knows who our next goalkeeper is - it's obvious he was consulted.

It was very odd how the "it's not Neuer" quote was completely left out of the reporting of that interview for at least 24 hours.

So maybe it's a Dutch player?

That doesn't make any sense - he'd only be consulted if the keeper was Dutch? Would be incredibly little faith shown in his judgement if they thought he could only give a credible opinion on a player if that player was Dutch.

Now also being reported by German media - BILD.de suggesting that United have bid 27m for Neuer after his top notch display last Tuesday.

He plays for Schalke in Munich in the Allianz-Arena on Saturday and at Old Trafford on Wednesday - let's see whether this might influence his decision. Bayern's supporters group ''Schickeria'' have apparently announced that they are planning on letting Neuer know that they simply do not want him as their new goalkeeper.

that would be lovely if they´d be so nice as to do that.

Keeper is the most important signing we need this season by a mile.

Neuer would be superb but imo we should sign a top class keeper even of it is a big fee.

No doubt about that - Neuer has been the best goalkeeper in Europe this season and if we could somehow snatch him, it would be absolutely fantastic.

As much as I want us to buy a top midfielder, if the whole budget has to go on Neuer then so be it.

Even if there is a less than 10% chance of signing him we should do our utmost to get him.

Didn't Keane agree to join Blackburn and then changed his mind later to join us, so lets hope he Neuer changes his mind too.

If I recall correctly when Keano saw OT he said "I fancy that", and he never went to Blackburn "cause they're shite", so I doubt he wanted to go there.

They already have done it, they unfolded banners at their last meeting to tell him he wasn't welcome at the club.

Hmm! The plot thickens. Don't know whether this alleged bid is accurate but i admit i would be very surprised if it were.

What we do know though is that his move to Bayern is not set in stone, Bayern are currently out of the CL places, and if they were not to qualify it would make a move to OT that little bit more tempting.

I do get the feeling however that should Utd make a serious bid, then Schalke may well accept and the ball is then in Bayern's court to see how seriously they covet Neuer.

Neuer has stated he wants to stay in Germany but imo Bayern is the only reasonable option for an ambitious young player in Germany, so if Bayern were not prepared to match a serious bid, that may give Neuer little option but to consider a move abroad.

How much have we spent on Keepers after Pete retired?

£24million is a snip for what he'll bring to the team. Hope United break the bank to get him, we need solidity & not to have nightmares about keepers like we had after Pete & before Edwin!

A quick calculation...

Bosnich - Bosman (but received something like a £2m sign-on fee)
Taibi - £4.5m
Barthez - £7.8m
Carroll - £2.5m
Lopez - £1.5m
Howard - £2.3m (plus add-ons up to £1.2m)
Total: £18.6m (not counting Bosnich's signing fee and Howard's add-ons, nor Luke Steele at £500k plus add-ons up to £2m (I think))

Or he could refuse and just play out his contract and then join Bayern on a free. Isn't the contract up in 2012?

What about buying out his final year - does he have this option?
