Manuel Neuer

Well, maybe my comments towards Adler were harsh, but there's no denial that compared to Neuer or even De Gea he does not look that good. I believe we need a top-class goalkeeper to succeed VDS, no question about that, and therefore Adler, even though not 'shit' as I claimed before, is not the answer, and his being Man Utd fan won't help.

Those going must make sure they are able to turn this guy's head. We must entice him big time. He does not feel the need to travel, he seems to believe he can be whatever he wants to be in Germany, true, but he will be one hell of a keeper behind Vidic/Rio/Smalling.

Unbreachable.

SIR ALEX FERGUSON will make a £24m bid to blow Bayern Munich out of the water and clinch the signing of Manuel Neuer.

Manchester United have been tracking the German No.1 for the past 18 months yet believed the Schalke star had already sealed a move to Bayern.

But Alex Ferguson has learned no deal between Schalke and Munich is in place, and with the German giants unwilling to pay more than £20m he wants to launch one last bid to get his man.

And an offer of £24m could be too much for Bayern to match, leaving Ferguson in pole position to sign the man regarded as one of the world’s best goalkeepers.

Ferguson has courted the 25-year-old for some time, but had resigned himself to going for Atletico Madrid’s David De Gea as a replacement for Edwin van der Sar, thinking Neuer was out of his reach.

But Neuer’s stunning display in United’s 2-0 Champions League win on Tuesday has convinced Ferguson he should make one last attempt to get his top target.

Spanish star De Gea is also highly-rated by United, but there are fears that, at 20-years- old, he lacks the experience to be able to perform consistently at the highest level at present.

There are no such fears over Neuer, who has proven himself at last year’s World Cup and in the Champions League with Schalke this season. Until now it had been thought he was destined for Munich, but with Bayern struggling to make it into the Champions League next season there is now a slight chance he could move elsewhere.

And United were happy to learn yesterday that Schalke have not even held talks with their German rivals over a possible transfer – and Bayern already fear his price may be about to increase.

Good made up story. Why would Neur publicly state that he isn't signing an extension if he didn't already know where he was heading? Really - he'll just wait till the summer and see which team will bid enough for him for his club to sell and then go to whomever?

Then again after that display in particular - I do hope there is truth to it - however little chance there might be.

I'm surprised that it took the tabloids this long to come up with this sort of shite. I would have thought they have the garbage written well before the game was over, and just hit the enter button after the whistle. Much like the Matchday forum race actually.

Yes please. Premium goalkeepers will cost a premium, and to have that position sorted for the next 8+ years is more than worth it.

24m for a keeper.. no thanks

If we spend £30 mill on Neuer it will still be a bargain to get the best goalkeeper in the world for the next 10 years

Rather we spend £30 mill on him than £15 mill on de Gea or Stekelenburg - he is in a league of his own. And he is German - that is not a bad thing when it comes to goalkeepers. Mouthy, arrogant - and excellent - all of them!

De Gea won't be 15mil closer to 20mil

Fergie invited former Bundesliga coach Krautzun and they were sitting next to each other in the United bus and had a glass of red wine in the Hotel. According to him, Fergie said he really regrets that they did not fight more for Neuer. Which means we were never really trying and now we know its too late

Everyone back to the De Gea thread. Orderly fashion, please. No pushing.

Weird, people are more willing on here to spend 35mil on Bale or something when we already have two quality wingers in the squad. And while I havent seen De Gea much to make a judgement, Neuer looks the business and is 25 y/o. 24m for one the of the best, if not the best young GK right now sounds about right. Someone who might go on to play for 10+ years. Silly attitude to have, look at arsenal without a sound GK at the back.

Has just said moving to United was never an option for him. The Bayern move is pretty much a dead cert.

We need to turn our attentions to another target - although Neuer was the best by a distance.

Bayern will make it to the Champions League though, there is a point between them and Hannover in the league as far as I remember and they are used to the pressure so I think they will overtake them eventually......
I'm expecting you to be wrong unfortunately. Hannover are flying right now and already got the beter of Bayern in their head to head to getting even more of a mental boost. Bayern need a miracle to make the champions league in all honesty.

Not sure if this will be significant in Neuer's decision. If he wants to stay in Germany he will regardless

I haven't given up on Neuer, but it does look certain that he will be Bayern's number one come next summer.

Maybe the game next Wednesday will convince him otherwhise, who knows.

The problem with Neuer is not the negotiations with Schalke, but with the player itself. He has his mind set on Munich, and as we didnt really get in contact with him, its just too late now.

We can try to bid now, as Bayern has yet to enter negotiations, but Neuer seems to know where he wants to be next season

The most expensive keeper after Buffon cost 10.5m and that was a long time back as well. Keepers generally arent as expensive as outfield players

Yes, times have changed and players are a lot more expensive now, but still given that he has just 12(14) months left on his contract and has said that he will be leaving, 24m is crazy money for Neuer

Shouldnt have generalized it to any keeper, but the others we have been linked to are all under 20m (the most expensive being de gea at 17.5m who has a long term contract with at. mad).
stekelenburg, who mulensteen said was our #1 target a few months back, shouldnt cost that much either.

I'm surprised I'm the only one here who thinks 24m for someone who has declared his intention to leave and is nearing the end of his contract would be excessive

Great keeper, if we can afford it then great. I just dont think it's happening if thats the asking price for him

Well if we're going in big for anyone, it might as well be Neuer I reckon.

£24m for a goalkeeper is fine, £24m for a player with one year left on his contract is a joke.

Sure it is. Hypothetically though say if you could have Neuer at 24m or have someone else at 15m + (De Gea, Adler, etc etc), would you really evaluate it that way ? And not opt for Neuer just because he is overpriced given that he is in the last year of his contract ?

puts schalke in a tight spot if theres only one team in the running. they would welcome our interest. theres legs in this yet.

Schalke would be more than happy with a bidding war, but they're not the issue here - Neuer wants the Bayern move. If a player doesnt want to move to us, he wont, it doesn't matter what we do. Even if we offered him a mammoth salary, Bayern could do exactly the same.

I know, what a plank.

Perhaps we should sign £7m types like Ben Foster and Tim Howard. We should probably leave the best goalkeepers in the world to the big boys like Bayern

A long time ago many people were happy enough with Foster. When I criticized him two years ago and suggested Neuer as a replacement for VdS, I was laughed at. Oh, how the times have changed.

I don't get this obsession with how much a player costs. It's not like the club's spending your money, is it?

Sometimes you just have to pay over the odds in order to get the man you want.

If you spend too much money on one player, you can't spend on others. That's why fans have to think about transfer fees.

That said, Neuer would be worth every money and is probably Bayern's best transfer in years.

Yeah but the club knows what it's doing. It's not like they impulsively sign a player for £30m and then realise "oh yeah shit, we were meant to strengthen other areas of the team as well."

If they spend big on a player it's because he's a priority signing.

And yeah, you can tell from the tone of my posts that we should break the bank for Neuer. Not that it's actually gonna make any difference, he's blatantly already agreed terms with Bayern.
