Newcastle United Football Club (nicknamed The Magpies) is a professional football club based in Newcastle upon Tyne. The first record of football being played on Tyneside dates from 3 March 1877 at Elswick Rugby Club. Later that year, Newcastle's first football club, Tyne Association, was formed. The team was renamed Newcastle East End F.C. in October 1882. Shortly after this, another Byker side, Rosewood FC, merged with East End to form an even stronger side. Meanwhile, across the city, West End Cricket Club began to take an interest in football and in August 1882, they formed Newcastle West End F.C. West End played their early football on their cricket pitch, but in May 1886, the club moved into St. James' Park.

The two clubs became rivals in the Northern League. During the spring of 1892, in a season during which West End's results were at an all-time low, and in which they had lost to their bitter rivals, East End, five times, West End found themselves in serious trouble. They approached East End with a view to a take over, the directors having decided that the club could no longer continue — leading to a merger of the two rivals as Newcastle East End decided to adopt a new name in recognition of the merger.Suggested names included Newcastle F.C., Newcastle Rangers, Newcastle City and City of Newcastle, but Newcastle United was decided upon on 9 December 1892, to signify the unification of the two teams.

The club has been a member of the Premier League for all but three years of the competition's history, spending 85 seasons in the top tier as of May 2016, and has never dropped below English football's second tier since joining the Football League in 1893. They have won four League Championship titles, six FA Cups and a Charity Shield, as well as the 1969 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup and the 2006 UEFA Intertoto Cup. Newcastle United has the ninth highest total of trophies won by an English club. The club's most successful period was between 1904 and 1910, when they won an FA Cup and three of their First Division titles. The club were highly successful in the Premier League in the 1990s and early 2000s without winning any trophies, but have been mostly struggling since the 2006–07 season, and were relegated in 2009 and 2016.

Newcastle has a fierce local rivalry with Sunderland, and the two clubs have engaged in the Tyne-Wear derby since 1898. Newcastle play their home games at St James' Park — which has been the home ground of Newcastle United since 1892 and has been used for football since 1880.

They are without a doubt the better team and should win this. Doesn't even really matter which players we use.

I don't care how this goes, time to give some of the fringe players a run out, it can't be any worse.
Knowing ETH, it will be the same old dross

0 - 3 Newcastle. They will be up for this after losing the final last season.

Need to reset a bit. I don’t think this is how we’ll line up, but it’s what I’d do.

    Onana
    Dalot - Varane - Maguire - Regulion
    Mainoo - Casemiro
    Pellistri - Hannibal - Garnacho
    Hojlund

You might as well put money on him fielding the exact same line up as he did today for this game

Time to give the kids a go and get some energy in midfield

    Garnacho Hojlund Williams
    Isak Hansen
    Mainoo Mejbri
    Amass Kwambala Varane Dalot
    Onana

They really cant do any worse than the old horses and atv least ther will be some effort

Have to give some different players a chance and be prepared to stick with anyone that does impress. ETH is sleepwalking into the sack with his current selections.

    Onana
    Lindelof Varane Maguire Reguilon
    Amrabat Mainoo
    Antony Mount Garnacho
    Hojlund

ETH needs to make a statement. His stubbornness is going to get him sacked.
    Onana
    Dalot-Varane-Maguire-Regulion
    ----------Hannibal-Amrabat-----------
    Antony--------Mount--------Garnacho
    -------------------Martial-----------------------

Drop Bruno, Rashford for being shit.
    Rest Hojlund.

When was the last time we approached a game vs Newcastle as the underdogs ?

    Onana
    Dalot--Varane--H--Reguillon
    Mainoo--Casemiro--Hannibal
    Mount
    Rashford--Martial

People saying playing the kids are so delusional when has any team suddenly started playing kids in a match that matters. They’ll get slaughtered out there, folks have overrated the youth so much in their heads its insane.

Don't start Bruno, Rashford or Antony.

Also keep Lindelof away from LB.

I hope ETH plays the kids.

This season will be miserable without a good cup run or two. Need to keep progressing in the hope that we will find some form by the later rounds.

    Onana
    Dalot Maguire Evans Reguilon
    Casemiro Mainoo
    Rashford Mount Garnacho
    Hojlund

Don't expect much here but I'd like to see this. Doubt ten hag does it.

Onana, dalot, maguire, varane, reguilon, beckham, Keane, Scholes, giggs, Hoiljund, Martial.

It's unreal how the prediction wheel has changed in the past 6-10 months: it used to be virtually everyone would say we were going to win every game - Sunday's went totally the other way and saw has this game. 0-2, I reckon

Would drop Rashford for Pellestri in the League Cup too. Maybe even blood Dan Gore as well if he's fit. At this point, Ten Hag needs to experiment and a full reset of the first 11 would be nice, maybe even Bayindir etc.

If we lose, we lose. My feeling is we'd win, at this point our first 11's problems are mental as well as technical.

This will be the defining moment in EtH's managerial career. Lose again, and the "sacking" shouts will get very loud.

    His first "real" test...
I would at least like to see something different, new line-up, another approach and a better attitude from the players. I highly doubt it, he doesn't seem to have a plan B or even A.1 for that matter.

Despite being at home anything other than a cup exit will be a major surprise, ETH really needs to start doing things & earning his corn instead of just looking confused on the sidelines.

At this stage, i would throw both domestic cups in the bin and use the extra days on the training ground to work something out. Same goes for Europe, if we don't qualify for the CL knock-outs.

Ten Hag can't afford to lose games and be out of any competition

He has to change things around a bit. Has to.

A poor performance and defeat will make things very difficult for ETH. And we are Away at Fulham on Sat which is another v difficult match.

He'll be gone, at the latest, by the end of the season anyway. He's decimated by long-term injuries, his key signings look like they haven't played a game of football before, and his star men are struggling to find any vein of form. Both ETH and the players could use the time on the training ground and the leisure of one game per week to get their act together. Only a decent second half of the season, performance wise, can save his skin.
