Manchester United vs Lens (Sat 5th August, 12:45 UK time)

Lens are just so much stronger and quicker in possession and out of possession. We were seeing this frequently against other good teams last season as well. We are getting bullied out there and personally I think some of these players are regressing physically at an alarming rate.
People always slag off the French league yet want to sign all their young players.

I don’t think we have bought well at all. The Mount signing still doesn’t make sense to me. He wants to play high up the pitch and is leaving Casemiro exposed. It’s not looking great.

Hojlund is a massive gamble which I can’t see working out. I’m expecting him to be a massive flop, should never have spent £70m on him.

God do you ever get tired of being so negative? The lad hasn’t kicked a ball yet and you’re already writing him off.

No he doesn’t. If we needed to pass backwards an extra five yards makes no difference. It’s mostly Dalot but you have to position yourself better as a keeper.

He doesn't play any higher than other keepers like Ederson or Allison. We have to cut those errors out of our defence to enable him to do what we bought him for.

You can't judge the physical aspect of a team during pre-season, it all depend on the training they went through. If the workload was high, it's normal for them to be tired.

One day it can be a great tackle and opposite team wins the ball and then score exact same goal. Who will be blamed for that? Luck?

"Great tackles" don't happen in a vacuum. With the way we're setting up to play and with the keeper being an additional passing outlet - there should always be a passing lane open. There's obviously a degree of risk, but it's how we want to play.

Again, a simple 10 yard pass being fluffed is not on the keeper

If you've been paying attention, when Lens are on the attack, Onana gets back in position very quickly. Even on that goal he was merely a fingertip short.

When your RB messes up a basic as hell 2 foot pass and the opposition takes a first time shot, to complain the keeper was out of position is trying abit too hard to force the blame elsewhere.

If they our defensive line was 1 meter further back, Onana would have been too. He moves forward when the defenders do and back when they come back.

Wake up.

Very underwhelming/late signings coupled with a very disjointed pre-season. Hopefully EtH makes it click in time for the season kick-off.

There's a line between suicidal goalkeeping and good positioning though.

Not sure he needed to be that far out, just inside his box would have been the perfect position.

It’s not suicidal though, our right back should not be giving away possession there. Dalot is 100% to blame.

Do you think he would have been stood where he was if he knew Dalot was going to do that?

If the answer is yes then you’re right, he’s suicidal and stupid and we shouldn’t have signed him. If the answer is no then maybe Dalot is a feckkng idiot?

Still don't understand what the plan is with this set up. Everytime our CBs have the ball, you can see a massive chasm in midfield filled with only opposition ayers. Genuinely do not get it. Midfielders are too high up for no reason.

Agreed. The change of shape from 2-1 to 1-2 isn’t looking great.

How can you get lobbed when you never leave your line? If he didn’t save it it would have been a massive error on his behalf, thankfully today that error was Dalot’s.
It's on both Dalot and Onana,

Dalot with a stupid pass, Onana due to absolutely horrendous positioning.

Lens have been really solid, have to give credit. Tbh, look the better team imo.

Much like long periods like season, I'm not overly confident we'll create goal scoring chances when we break. Under Ole we looked so clinical.

I'm not debating Dalot is an idiot, but Onana shouldn't be that far out, there's no need for it.
It's on both players, this hasn't been the first time Onana has been beaten like that ...

Lack of physicality in this team is one of the biggest issues.

He's up there because we had secure possession and he's forming a tight triangle to break the line in midfield if it's passed to him.

It's not his fault if Dalot misplaces a 10 metre pass and he is supposed to act on the basis his teammates can pass

On a side note, Kevin Danso looks pretty good. He's fast, physical, defensively solid and good in build up play.

What’s with all the blonde highlights? Looking like the 1998 Romanian World Cup team

Nobody can explain why being a few yards deeper when we have the ball would be a negative. Maybe on this occasion he was higher than he should’ve been.

I don't get people blaming Onana. It's like walking through East London at midnight wearing a £5000 suit and a bunch of flashy watches and then saying you weren't at fault for getting robbed. It was the robbers fault!

I have seen Thibaut Courtois being first and foremost the master of his own penalty area, never caring about moving so far up the field. Is that enough for you?
We didn’t sign Courtois. We didn’t sign Onana to play like Courtois. Get a clue.

There’s nothing in our transfer business or pre season performances that suggests our passing, close control, composure and decision making will improve. Hopefully it just clicks but we’re miles off competing when we make so many simple errors and bad decisions.
