Some observations;
- GK; Kovar played with authority
- Full backs; Fernandez; showed confidence and an eye for positioning going forward, not that much quality on the ball though. Williams looked rusty and disappointing. Wan-Bissaka sharp and aggressive defensively, not much on the offensive side.
- CBs; Martinez his usual sharp self defensively, but those incisive forward passes weren't there. Varane mostly solid, but slumped a bit towards the end of the half - got cleanly beaten in at least one key duel. Bennett and especially Fish looked safe, calm and solid in the face of intensive Leeds forward pressing.
- CM; I thought Mainoo was very impressive - poised, calm and with quality interventions both on and off the ball. Mount, hardly revolutionary but very good on the press and showed quality in several situations. A decidedly OK debut. Savage seemed to just drop off as a third CB and help out with simple things.
- No10; I thought Mejbri was great - ferocious on the press, and generally quality on the ball. Hansen-Aarøen too, but in a completely different way - unflappable, hard to get the ball off and strong in his distribution. If he continues to develop, he could become a really good ball control type of midfielder.
- Wide forwards: Forson just looked lost out there. Shoretire was underwhelming, as he always seems to be whenever I've watched him for the A squad. Amad, up and down, but obvious quality. Emeran - for those who've watched him more, is he really that good? goal and assist, and very nearly had a second assist too. Although he wasn't very frequently involved, he looked potentially lethal.
- Strikers; Sancho was absolutely miserable as a false 9, unsurprisingly - the qualities he has aren't the ones you need in that role, I think. Hugill; scored a goal and worked hard, but looks fairly limited.
Above all; love to see United doing these pre-season games in Norway. They sell out the biggest venue in the country in minutes when the tickets are put out, though the game occurs while most people are on holiday. TV commentators said downtown Oslo resembled a United festival on the day of the game. For context, the national team, with Haaland and Ødegaard, regularly struggle to fill the same venue even for important games and no Norwegian club team ever gets crowds anywhere near that. The cup final is really the only comparable, and I doubt even that sells out as quickly.
