Manchester United vs. Chelsea

True, but as you acknowledged its the Jose factor that leads me to feel our defences aren't too far apart.

And that's it? feck me Bob, your faith is astounding. Terry's capable enough but Cahill is a liabilty against a fast-paced forward who keeps the ball down. We do tend to play a wide game but we won't be chucking high crosses anywhere near Cahill and Cech for 90 minutes.

I guess it depends what you mean by defence. I don't think there's that much he can do with that back line - it's just not got the same quality ours does. But in terms of the whole team as a defensive unit, I agree that he's up there with the best at that.

Go and watch the Madrid games. I know Arsenal fans these days have probably forgotten what a really great defensive performance looks like...

I watched them. General Caf consensus after the first leg was that he played well off the ball, not on it, and you conceded twice in the second game so I'm not entirely sure he did that great there either.

Either way, I wasn't thinking 'oh my God, what a talent' after those two matches.

'Played well off the ball' translates as kept Ronaldo so quiet that he was eventually forced to switch sides (which, admittedly, led to the goal).

As for the second, we kept them pretty quiet until the red card. Obviously after that things get more complicated, although Jones wasn't at fault for either goal.

As long as the occasion of Moyes' first official home game doesn't become too big, we should be beating Chelsea. I say that because title contenders should be looking to win all home games. Doesn't mean it'll happen but we can't go into this quaking in our boots about Oscar or Hazard and we won't.

We are far more clinical than this current Chelsea side will ever be, however this Chelsea side can create chances at ease. It's up to us to step it up and play our game. If we let them play, they can be dangerous. We saw it twice at Old Trafford last season. After we went 2-0 up in the FA Cup we bent over and let them play and they clawed it back. And the league game was just as bad, we didnt look interested in winning but obviously it was that stage of the season where it didnt really matter.

If Moyes can get us to shut off the central gaps, we'll win when RVP scores a goal from nothing.

He was in the stands at Old Trafford for the second leg, of course he wasn't at fault for the goals... but he didn't exert any influence from there, unless you claim he's some kind of black wizard which wouldn't surprise me to be fair.

 'played well off the ball' ie defended well.

I don't think Rooney will apply himself properly. Risky to start him.

That problem can be easily solved by selling him to us between now and the start of the match tomorrow.

Provided that he passes the medical quickly and papers get sorted out in time, I'm sure Jose can motivate him to apply himself properly.

I'd never bet on you cnuts but with my punter's head on you're great value at 6/4.

Whatever might have been up for consideration during the week i think the news of our injuries takes a few of Moyes' decision out of his hands, for instance on footballing grounds along Rooney will have little choice but to make up part of the cavalry and start on the bench.

Whether it is Kagawa or Giggs remains an unknown though, as does whether we'll see Jones at right back or used in CM [i think we'll see him feature in one or the other].

I think after today's result, this match has actually become a must win. Not in the sense that it would be a disaster if we didn't but that it would be an amazing start to the season to have both our main rivals suffer defeat, so early in the season. I think it would rock them a fair bit. Would be a great confidence booster to Moyes and the lads, too.

Surely it's less of a must-win, because if we lose we'll only fall behind one of our title rivals, not two. Winning is not going to be any more of a blow to City than losing, because either way one of their rivals will go three points ahead of them. Their ideal result would probably be a draw.

Agreed it would be a confidence booster for our lads, but that was the case whatever happened with City.

This is the more relevant point, I think.

Apart from duffer and Mata, I can't stand anything about Chelsea so I hope we destroy them.
PS the Chelsea fans in the Newbs' all need shooting.

----------Carrick--cleverly--------
---------------giggs---------------
Valencia--------------------welbeck
-----------------RVP------------------

We don't have many other options...

Can we stuff these cnuts. Serious intent shown in light of City's loss. A win here would be very good momentum for the game in a few weeks.

edit: For the games including Liverpool.

When Sky first hit the scene he big match on Monday night used to be quite thing. Important clash under the lights and all that, similar to the CL in its way.

Chelsea have had an extra game since our last one. So I'd like to see us really bust a gut, put in two matches worth of effort, and basically just run them into the ground. Some of our best victories over Chelsea over the last few seasons - particularly that set of three games in close proximity in 2011 - have been won by the sheer speed with which we hit the ground running. Blew them out of the water before they even had a chance to put up a proper fight.

Very confident going into this game now, no way will Jose lose a chance to steal a march on the rivals, even if its only a draw.

After todays events Im convinced, Lukaku to start. Him, Hazard, Oscar and Ramires will be watering at the mouth at the sight of that United defence. Its whether we can keep RVP quiet that will determine whether we get 1 point or all 3. Going for 2-2.

 You fecking nutter

De Gea
Valencia Rio Vidic Evra
Jones Carrick
Cleverly
Welbeck RVP Kagawa

Valencia vs Hazard is a disaster waiting to happen, moving Jones to midfield is unnecessary when CM is a weak point for them - in fact Hazard is probably the most dangerous player on the pitch for Chelsea so moving Jones away from that makes no sense IMO

hope the crowd puts on something special, not many mentioning how its moyes first game and old trafford. hope the crowd does the occasion justice

Hypothetically you can, but you wont. IF you do win and that's a very big IF it will be very tight, as you have never stuffed a Jose team, ( the 2-0 win vs Inter being the closest) let alone a Chelsea Jose team. Sounds like we're both really up for this one, cant wait!

EssexRob has become properly obnoxious since Mourinho came back, hope we win to shut him up as much as anything.

They've only had 2 games so far and the last one was 5 days ago, they're hardly going to be leggy. It's actually more likely that they'll be closer to full sharpness having had an additional competitive game. I'm not sure we have the players to play with the intensity that we did in the 2011 league match, Park's gone, Hernandez won't play and Rooney and Valencia may or may not play and don't appear to have the same physicality anymore. They also seem to be coming in in much better shape than they were at that stage, it was clear Ancelotti was leaving and they never fully regained their form after losing 3-0 to Sunderland.

I must say I'm not particularly confident going into this one, the rational reasoning for that is we haven't been able to handle their creative triumvirate in recent fixtures and we still lack the personnel to break their play up while the irrational reasoning is that it just seems destined that Chelsea will eke out a scratchy 1-0 win and the press will be relentless about we should've gone for Mourinho.

The 2 matches against Inter were the only times Ferguson managed to properly outplay Mourinho, we absolutely battered them at the San Siro.

I have spent the best part of 3 seasons being 'underdogs' and 2 not in a title race, this time we have the manager, almost the team, and the experience. City showed today that they are far from scary when any of their players are missing. What better time is there to find some spirit and bullishness!

Bit ridiculous that despite all those Russian millions, Chelsea were 'underdogs' and not really in the title race for 3 seasons.

Hey, money cant buy you titles, you got to have a team and a manager as well!

Poor you. That along with winning the Champions League sounds like a real chore.

The money does buy you the team and manager as well as has been shown. It's not like Chelsea stopped spending any money particularly in the last couple of years.
