Maybe LVG sees a lot of quality and potential in Cleverley. Maybe he will not sign Vidal because he wants to give Cleverley a chance.
Feck off with that bullshit. Cleverley has been given plenty of chances, he's had feck all competition for the last 2-3 years.

Hmm Cleverley as Captian. Must be to try to boost him. I wonder if United will start more defensiv this game to try to keep the tempo down. Going to a fun game.

Or may be as a wing-back? Admittedly he is defensively not up to it now, but he could be a great wing back in such a system.

I wouldn't be convinced with him as a wing back but I suppose if he could develop the defensive side of his game then he may be able to play there.

He's probably my biggest worry about the 351 formation. He's best as the sort of flexible AM/winger that you get in a 4231, and the 351 has nothing like that. He's not quite as dangerous playing as a true #10 (and not as good as Mata there), and there are really no other wide/AM roles in that formation.

I suppose you might be able to get away with playing him in the wingback position but as a proper winger, provided there was a defensively-minded midfielder like Fletcher who could cover for him. But even that isn't ideal because a wingback is supposed to always stay very wide, whereas Januzaj is best when he can mix it up, going wide sometimes and coming central sometimes.

Agreed. I think if he could play a role similar to Robben at the World Cup. On the team sheet it showed him as a striker but in reality he had the freedom to go where he wants and didn't have to worry about defensive duties.

I think Januzaj could do this. He would be great at finding the pockets of space, dribbling and running at the defence. Think he could develop into a top player in a role like this.

Cleverley is a cowardly player and the pressure will get to him tonight. Hopefully someone is there to carry him again because no doubt he will retreat back into his shell after 15 minutes.

Cleverley's issue is lack of confidence, not lack of ability. Hope the press conference and potential captaincy gives him some encouragement and helps him remember that he is actually a decent midfielder.

:annoyed::annoyed:

I do not think Januzaj has enough pace to be as effective as Robben in that role though.

While his lack of confidence is an issue, I'm not really sure lack of ability is not. Having said that he would be a good squad player.

Cleverley as captain is odd as evident by the shock from all corners of United fans, even if he is playing the full 90 mins. He's not exactly a player that screams out captain material or a player who can inspire a team or grab a game by the scruff of the neck. In fact, he would probably be towards the tail end of my list, one of the last people I'd choose, if I was choosing a United captain out of the current squad. They could just have two different captains in each half. It's not like we haven't seen it before.

LvG's obviously seen something we haven't and of course, it's just a friendly, but still very odd.

Was meant to say dribbling auto correct on my phone changed it .

Yeah granted he's not as quick as Robben, but he's no slouch.

I hope Cleverly find his feet again and fulfill the potential that he was showing while on loan with Watford.

He would prove the idiotic posters wrong like how Fletcher did.

Fecking hell what is wrong with Van Gaal?

Cleverley used to be a player I liked but he has been given enough chance and he is nowhere near good enough to be a starter and he is being made captain. He isn't even the type of person you make a captain.

Who cares if he's captain in a pre season friendly for fecks sake? The captaincy is an overstated role anyway.

Calm down, it's a preparation game under LVG, Cleverley might as well be kicked out tomorrow. His performance tonight will a play an immense role in the decision by our coach, so chill.

Cleverley tryna to gain the confidence of the fans again... Yesterday you seen yourself a Spain-ish type of player, now Deutch? Right right...

Maybe You are right or Maybe Van Gaal has been told we need a extra couple of quids when we sell Cleverley in few days.

Agree. Van Gaal out!

It's just a pre-season friendly and he's one of only two who'll be playing 90 minutes. It may even give him a bit of a boost.

Ok I agree Cleverley could maybe gain confidence and never know thic could add a spark which ignites the fire and he turns out to be a useful player. Maybe just maybe he will pass more than a couple of yards. If he does that he could be a very decent player. I used to like him so much a couple of seasons ago. Thought he was "the thing".

its only for a pre season friendly though... is it really that serious?

I think Darren Fletcher would be quite good as captain. Has the experience and hopefully his illness doesn't affect him this season.

I hope Jesse Lingard will play today and show LvG what he is really made of.

Not bothered by Cleverley being captain. Actually think it might help him improve as a player getting such a responsibility. The reaction of some fans is always over the top, they just want to get outraged by anything even mundane things like captaining a friendly match

Another reason for making Cleverley captain could be that there are only 3 CMs is the squad (Cleverley, Herrera and Fletcher). Since Fletch and Ander played 90mins against LA Galaxy it only makes sense to play Cleverley 90mins today because of lack of numbers.

Expect one of Fletch or Ander to play 90mins in the next match against Inter Milan

Isn't Powell also a CM?

Am I really seeing outrage and annoycance that the captaincy in a friendly has been given to a player that's been at the club for 14 years? Just because he's not flavour of the month or whatever crap? feck off.

Herrera and the front 3  not too arsed about the others really. Should be good.

Two young lads have to take this chance tonight! A big performance from Blackett and James would surely sew up some playing time this season

Be interesting to see how Clevz and Ander work together.

Some of the reactions to Cleverley being made captain are ridiculous. People asking if Van Gaal knows what he's doing? The same Van Gaal who has won titles at every club he's managed and developed at least half a dozen world class players? Yeah, lets bring back Moyes. Moyes treated Clev like the plague so he must've known what he was doing...
