Ok I agree Cleverley could maybe gain confidence and never know thic could add a spark which ignites the fire and he turns out to be a useful player. Maybe just maybe he will pass more than a couple of yards. If he does that he could be a very decent player. I used to like him so much a couple of seasons ago. Thought he was "the thing".

Look at it this way, there is no way anything can go wrong for us.

Cleverly impresses - he shows us that he has a future with his style of football under LvG. He was great during his time with Watford, and he was good for us before Moyes took over.

Cleverly flops - LvG knows that he cannot depend on Cleverly and accelerates the signing of another CM (hopefully Vidal).

I'm not mad at the Cleverley captain decision, just bewildered.. Seems completely pointless and unneeded in my opinion, just leave it with Rooney... The guy is NOT a captain, as soon as he had a bit of pressure he bottled it and accused the fans of using him as a scapegoat, strange. o.O

Big question now is whether Will Keane, Jesse and Zaha will play in the 2nd half. Was hoping at least one of them will start

Am I really seeing outrage and annoycance that the captaincy in a friendly has been given to a player that's been at the club for 14 years? Just because he's not flavour of the month or whatever crap? feck off.
Well said. Some people are really embarrassing themselves.

 Can't believe Cleverley is captain.. There isn't many in the squad less suited to the role.

Some of the reactions to Cleverley being made captain are ridiculous. People asking if Van Gaal knows what he's doing? The same Van Gaal who has won titles at every club he's managed and developed at least half a dozen world class players? Yeah, lets bring back Moyes. Moyes treated Clev like the plague so he must've known what he was doing...

Completely agree.

He's playing 90 minutes, that's the only reason, everyone here needs to calm down. If Rooney was playing 90 minutes then he would be. Same with Evans and Jones. But they aren't.

confidence building and showing trust in a player that has been at this club so long is clearly frowned upon on this forum

Or Van Gaal is just assessing Cleverley ability.... We are not particular stock with quality and option at the moment in this role.

Nevertheless, I hope Cleverley does well. As I said before, his potential is similiar to scott parker and I do not see his ceiling reaching higher than that.

this

Why doesn't he just give Rooney the captaincy though? what's the point in giving it Cleverley? because he plans to play 90 minutes is hardly a excuse.

This.

Looks like we won't need another midfielder now that Cleverley has been promoted to an important player for us.

Really clever move from LVG. He probably realizes that someone like Rooney earns nothing on being the captain but someone like Cleverley will feel really confident in himself and maybe he'll get back to his best fast enough.

i think you're reading too much into the captain call for this. he's giving it to the guy who will be on the pitch for 90 minutes. that was between blackett and cleverley.

loving the front 3 and herrera. can't wait to see it against better opposition tonight.

happy also that after a fine second half during the week, reece james gets the start. hoping that's a sign of things to come for the season and form will be properly rewarded.

Waiting all day for this (on holidays and got up at 8:30am thinking it was one at 9am) then find out we're predrinking in the mates house and he doesn't have channels or broadband as he just moved in.. :(. One of you lot be so kind and upload it!

I'm just hoping it raises his price so that the fraud is on his way out of the club.

Are we really running out of shit to argue about ? who cares about captaincy in a friendly game?

Cleverley as captain is certainly the most interesting thing about this lineup, didn't see it coming at all. I hope he does well

You don't change Captain because the original isn't playing 90 minutes. Oh and where did you get your info about Rooney not playing the full 90? It's not like he hasn't got the legs for it.

Its fantastic man management from Van Gaal to make Cleverley captain tonight. Cleverley's confidence was shot to pieces last season. Moyes treated him like a bad smell and you could see, even in the Norwich 4-0, Cleverley was questioning his every move. Van Gaal's come in, seen something in Cleverley, and is now building up his self-belief.

In the cold light of day this is a meaningless friendly on a pre-season money spinning jaunt to the States. A few months from now we'll struggle to even remember who played tonight. Cleverley will never forget though. Clev will be feeling a thousand feet tall right now and, God willing, that will stay with him through the season. If it does, we might just start seeing the guy who blazed onto the scene in 2011/12.

Don't get me wrong mate I don't really care/mind, I just find it to be a confusing decision and one I hope the players understand 100%.. The lad hasn't done anything to warrant it that's all, and for me he doesn't have the mentality. I do rate him though, people forget Sir Alex trusted him in a midfield two for two years.

Van Gaal said only cleverley and Blackett will play the full 90. So yeah, just like for fletcher, he's making the player captain who will be there the whole game probably to see how he deals with it throughout 90 minutes and adapts in the position. It makes sense you know.
