Manchester United vs. Arsenal

Another good example and forgotten about. Never mentioned but how they got away with that I'll never know.

Yeah, Arsenal fans and the media have a selective memory about wrong refereeing decisions in this fixture. The offside goals in 2003, Ashley Cole taking out Ronaldo in 2005, Kolo Touré handball in 2006, Adebayor handball goal in 2008, Gallas' sneaky and disgusting kick at Nani that went unpunished in the FA Cup game in 2008 (and he didn't even get a retrospective ban), the Fletcher red card... even in the 8-2 game it was a joke that Arshavin was allowed to remain on the pitch after his thuggery throughout the first half.

We got a result in ALL these games however. That's the difference. Arsenal lose and bitch and moan about referees while we dick them no matter what the referees do.

God, to think people want them to win the title if we don't. feck them I say.

Well said.

Spot on, mate. As a United fan born in the late 80s, my abiding memory of a rivalry with United is of course the Arsenal one from 1997 - 2005. I hated them. I hated everything about them. Their arrogance. Their pompousness. Their supposed superior footballers. Their shithouse tackling. Their thuggery. Having to watch that curly-haired fecker celebrating Overmars' goal at Old Trafford every time we played them. The fact that the media and - it felt - the country hated us and loved their "Gallic flair".

Obviously, much like how Fergie's relationship with Wenger blossomed when they were no longer a threat, I grew to appreciate them a little more these past few years. The petrodollar outfits assumed the mantle of our rivals and Arsenal slipped into obscurity. We swatted them away with the minimum of fuss, and laughed at their pathetic attempts to cry at foul play much like an older brother does his younger sibling when any familial activity turns competitive.

I missed having that hatred between us, though. I missed these games having a meaning far beyond the three points at stake. I missed the teams lining up in the tunnel and not giving an inch. I couldn't believe my eyes when Santos asked van Persie for his t-shirt at half-time of our game last season. Was this really a United v Arsenal match?

I'm fecking made up now that Arsenal are resuming their brash, cocky selves and their supporters are getting giddy about being genuine contenders to take our crown. I am delighted that they are coming to Old Trafford in more expectation that hope. I am relieved that they believe their midfield is actually superior to ours in terms of technique and physique. I am thrilled that they think that their defensive problems are finally fixed. I am ecstatic that they think that Giroud is the complete centre-forward for their system and the man to pin their goal-scoring hopes on.

I hope to feck come 6 o'clock tomorrow that they regret the day they underestimated us. Old Trafford is going to be a bear pit. Let's see which XI really has the bottle for it.

Good shout. Forgot about that. I remember being fuming after that game. Felt like we'd been robbed. Wasn't that the same game when Sol Campbell smashed his big fat elbow into Ole's face? And then acted outraged when he got a red?

That's the one yeah. And they were moaning about that!

You're getting me even more pumped for this, Nahealai. Can't fecking wait!

This always whets the appetite as well...

Keane getting the better of Vieira again. And love G.Nev giving Vieira the stare at handshake time.

Just had a browse through a match report from last seasons fixture:
"A strange game," Ferguson reflected. "Nothing like Manchester United and Arsenal games of the past." The atmosphere was flat. Arsenal were rarely in it and, before the end, their supporters had grown bored of abusing Van Persie and turned on their chief executive Ivan Gazidis. "We want our Arsenal back" was the general tone.
How premature it now feels that earlier in the season Arsenal were being commended for a new sense of order in defence and the appointment of Steve Bould was being hailed for re-establishing them as a genuine threat.
Instead, all the old failings have gradually returned.
I wonder what the narrative will be after the game tomorrow. I expect the atmosphere at OT to be far from flat though. Looking forward to it.

With all his bitterness towards Fergie and United in recent years you sometimes forget what a battleaxe of a leader we had in him. I wish we had someone in the middle with that much fight in him.

Not just a leader but as a midfielder too. He was a beast.

I dont think anybody's forgotten anything though, its just that all the bitching has led to the focus being shifted to that rather than his playing days specially as that's how he features in most discussions nowadays.

Yeah, "forgot" is the wrong word, it's just a shame he's spoiled his reputation like that. If he could hold back that nastiness he'd be a good coach for us.

He'd make a terrible coach if even half of what SAF wrote in his book was true.

Could play I think mate!! They have been very quiet with regards to player fitness etc! Very cagey indeed! He's vital to us tomorrow because your midfield is so strong.

Balls, thought as much.

OT's gonna be a proper bear pit tomorrow, teach us a lot about where both teams really are.

Biggest game since Madrid. I hope Moyes goes all out attack. The cautious approach in the big games at the start of the season failed.

I'd go for:

---------DDG--------
Rafael-Evans-Vidic-Fabio
---Cleverley--Carrick---
Nani---Rooney--Januzaj
----------RVP-----------

Chicharito and Kagawa and Giggs to come on if we need a goal. This side is just as skillfull and talented as Arsenal. Maybe even more.

Is Evra out? That aside I'd probably go for this to. Valencia is a shout but I expect Nani to try and rectify his last game and has good form generally against Arsenal. Need Rooney to put in a proper shift here.

De Gea
Rafael--Evans--Vidic--Evra
Carrick--Cleverley
Valencia--Rooney--Januzaj
van Persie

With Carrick missing (if that is the case) I worry a little about the centre of the pitch, even though he hasn't been in great form this season (much down to the shape) you still want him starting against the better teams. With or without him though it is going to be critical of Rooney to drop deep and link the play/put pressure on their midfield. Our wingers are also going to be crucial in this game, really need them to have a good game. Saying all that though, I fancy us to put ourselves right back in the mix with three points.

If Carrick is anywhere near close to being fit then I think he's worth the risk. The England games are pointless; he can miss those.

If all the doubts are fit, then certainly this. I liked the Jones/Evans partnership but the Stoke game is still fresh in the memory and Vidic/Evans is what I think this season's best pairing will be. The rest of the team picks itself other than perhaps right wing but I'd be happy with Valencia after last weekend.

The last game United really dominated is Villa home last season . For the first time in years i'm scared . This Arsenal is better then City , and they destroyed us .

I'd rather play Arsenal than City if I'm honest, but each to their own.

Not sure I'd agree with that, but this Arsenal is in my mind unquestionably on a different level to recent years (or 8 years come to that). The Dortmund result speaks volumes for them.

Yeah, my gambling self says bet on the spreads for Arsenal. I have a rule never to bet on anything I'm emotionally involved with, but it's damned tempting.

Scared????? What????

I'm really happy some guys on here aren't good football players........the amount of pussies on Redcafe is amazing.

We should have big respect of Arsenal........but Manchester United are never scared!!!!!!!!! Never!!! Never!!!

They won't underestimate Utd tomorrow that's for sure. The last time they were naive about a game (Dortmund at home) they lost and it's obvious they learnt that lesson by their win midweek. It's going to be a tight game but I think neither team has an outright edge in all areas of the pitch.
