Manchester United upgrade contact with Pep Guardiola, sources say

If there is any doubt about us getting Pep just get Carlo instead, would hate to miss out on him just because we leave it too late, or he thinks he is second choice, the man would transform us, as would Pep.

Can we drop this nonsense about Man Utd being one of the biggest clubs in the world?

Irrelevant. If I was Guardiola I'd want to go to a club likely to win things.

Sad to say, but you lot are in intensive care.

Not really, a top manager with enough financial backing from the club could revive this squad easily.

Because United are one of the biggest clubs in the world and have a similar stature to his previous two clubs?

Edit - If you meant like why would someone leave Bayern for United then yeah I agree it's a bit mad but he seems to want to leave

Exactly. The idea that United aren't attractive enough for Guardiola is pure nonsense. We have the money and the prestige to appeal to every manager. Sure, we're suffering at the moment, but Guardiola wouldn't view it like that. He'd see it as an opportunity. And it's not like players, who might very well pay attention to the current malaise. Managers go into a job thinking they're the ones to bring success.

Oh come on, I'm sure if he came here we would be able to compete for trophies. Just look at the league right now, all the usual top teams are incompetent

Typical. We first wait for the best managers to seal a deal somewhere else than we end up with SAF/Charlton mate

yeah i dont think the pep dream was ever on.

the negativity is starting to get to me. Maybe we have fecked ourselves over.

I would be delighted with either one of them. Pep would be better because he would be more influential for the club, but Ancelotti is a great option too.

Takes an opposition fan to point out what so many refuse to see.

City are a far far more attractive prospect for any player or manager these days. They've well and truly overtaken us.

Not that anyone will admit that. They'll just throw around phrases like history and romance.

That's exactly what Kenny Dalgleish said just a couple of months before resigning as manager of Liverpool in 1991 and tell me what happened to them?

Like it can't happen to you?

If you were Guardiola, why would you come to OT?

Makes no sense

Any top, top coach has an ego to match. They will truly believe they can transform any club's fortunes.

The option seems to be to either move to City, where things are progressing quite slowly but moving in the right direction, or United, where the rot has been stopped but the club is still looking for someone to impose their identity on.

Returning United to their former selves would be the bigger risk for any manager, but also the chance to leave a much greater legacy. I guess it depends on the size of his ego.

They are 3 points ahead

If Pep came here I would expect that he would be able to overtake City...especially with the money he would have available. The guy is someone who top players want to play for (which is why it would so stupid if Woodward didn't attempt to try and get him just because LVG has time left on his contract). If he goes to city then we are kinda fecked

We're in a much better situation, financially, than Liverpool were then and whether we like it or not, that's the most important thing now.

You should probably look at how much money United make every year compared to the rest of the PL teams. Football has changed a lot in the past 25 years

They'll win the league this season to take their 3rd PL title in 4 years, and to finish ahead of us for the 3rd year in a row.

Am I the only one who thinks we have a good chance? According to that, they've spent 3 years "working on him", most likely promising him the sun, moon and stars and have just got a strong maybe.

Yeah but some people have the ambition to turn things around and the task of doing that with United is bound to interest someone like Guardiola. Now I'm not saying he would definitely choose United over City but you're just relentlessly negative about everything.

We should also contact Carlo. Because if Pep goes to City, I'm almost certain Ancelloti goes to Munich.

They will win it because of how shit the rest of the league is. It's not exactly Chelsea 05 where it looked like we would be doomed forever.

The level where City are at right now can be easily reached with the right management. We are just run like a total joke which is why we are in this position

As a Charlton fan, I'm hardly an opposition fan but thanks for thinking so.

But I don't have any axe to grind. I watch Premiership football because I like football at the highest level.

You lot used to play some fantastic stuff but recently, it's been dour. To be honest, I don't bother watching much of you now. Tedious.

Anyway, when I watch premiership matches, I like watching Arsenal (obvious), City, Liverpool under Klopp, Leicester, Palace, Spurs (sometimes) and Everton.

I'm a neutral and you don't appeal to me at the moment...go figure.

Next summer is too far away.... Get Ancelotti in now and we could actually win the title this year.

With the squad we have now, no way in hell can we win the title. We need a striker who can finish, a left back who can stay fit, a midfield leader & a rapid winger who can actually cross with a degree of accuracy.
Giggs will manage for the rest of the season if Van Gaal goes & Carlo will not take over a club mid season (his words not mine)

Liverpool spent more than us in the 90s and 00s. They were there biggest spenders in the league... money doesn't guarantee anything. We need to make sure we make the right appointment and not another dud like Moyes and Van Gaal.

And tell me, how many times can your club however wealthy can afford to piss £250 million up the wall with no noticeable impact?

Go ask the Glazers.

This is bollocks, we have the money to compete with anybody we just need the right guidance, if anything you could say it was our location that would ultimately hinder us, but City are in the same boat so that's obviously irrelevant.

Fact is we are about to become the team with the highest revenue in the world, the team with the most fans in world, the rich history bit is just an added bonus. only a half wit could mess up this up, and if we want Pep we have every right to expect to get him....City are a hindrance to this, nothing more.

Winning 3 titles in 4 years is easy now?

Agreed that we are run like a joke, but you're underestimating how hard it is to win 1 PL title, never mind 3 in 4 years. If City do it, they'll deserve massive credit for it.

I wouldn't watch us if I wasn't a United fan, so I'm not surprised you don't!

I dream of a day we play football like the teams you listed.

Is Pep close to those ex Barca guys at City?

He's the perfect manager for getting City to the next level. Would be so annoying if he goes there

Close just about covers it. It was City's DoF Txiki Bergiristain who promoted Pep to first team coach at Barcelona. They are very good friends.

We're in a bad moment but any thought of us crumbling away like liverpool is just wishful thinking. 90% of the time the best clubs in any league are the strongest financially, that's just the reality of football, clubs that can buy and afford keeping top players. Now all top european clubs face times of transition, not far before their treble seasons bayern didn't make the CL. The key to coming back is getting a good manager and having the financial resources to back him. The idea that we're suddenly not an attractive job for top managers is beyond ridiculous, we pay the highest wages in football so why wouldn't anyone want that job? i'm not saying we aren't in a competition with city for pep because we are, but if you think top managers would shy away from this job because we aren't doing well you're mistaken.

The point was having Guardiola (who should be the right appointment) with the money.

I agree, wholeheartedly that we need to make the right appointments. Liverpool may have spent plenty, but they couldn't sustain it. We have the financial might to withstand more years of mediocrity. Obviously it's not ideal and the longer we go the harder it will be to attract top players/managers, but our financial clout means we'll be able to attract big managers for some time. We can offer them money and the chance to turn a big club around. Obviously we're in a bad place right now, but the Liverpool or the 90's comparison that people love is wide of the mark, for me.

Even if we want him he could go to City. Just as much chance at winning thing, plus the spanish connection with Begiristain and Soriano. He might have even given them his word

No I didn't mean to say that winning their last 2 titles was easy. But right now the league is incredibly weak at the top and City winning this years title isn't really something to be feared. They will win it because they are the best of an inept bunch of clubs and with the right management (Guardiola) it shouldn't be too difficult to get to that level.

Do you really think this is a great Man City side? Personally I think its nowhere near the quality of the previous title winners like Man Utd in 06-09, Chelsea 04-06, Arsenal in the early 2000s.

Maybe for players, I don't think that's the case for managers to be honest. A club usually sacks a manager and wants to appoint a better one when things aren't that great, so a new manager should be aware of that. Also most managers like Pep probably would love to use some money and form and bring a team like us back to the top. Liverpool have been useless in the last few years and they still got Klopp, which isn't that big of a shock imo as it wouldn't be a shock if Pep would join us or Ancelotti return to Milan for example. It would be weird if a world class player joins them and not looking at Barca, Real or Bayern, but with a manager imo not so much. Pep often mentioned big club with history etc... and managed Bayern and Barcelona so far, doesn't mean he couldn't join City of course with the connections they have, but still think he would prefer us if both are going all in for him. And while we are not good, it's not like City does set the world on fire right now.

How 3rd title in 4 years when last year was chelsea then city then united? surely that makes 2nd in 4 years? assuming it happens anyway, they've fluked a win today and only 3 points ahead of us.

3 in 5. My bad.

Its still impressive if they do it.

But you're not Guardiola so saying 'if I was Pep' and dismissing the size of a clubs potential and history means nothing.
It's long been established that Pep holds the values and history of major clubs in high regards. If that is enough to get him here is a different matter but it is a factor.
Kind of an important aspect in your 'if I was Pep' logic when you ignore that off the bat
