Manchester United transfer news and rumours for summer 2014

How do you remain so optimistic? Serious question.

Powerful drugs.
I am on some painkillers that have a fair kick, but that's only part of the reason for my optimism!

I expect us to sign Vidal, Rojo, a CB (perhaps Benatia) and maybe even Cuadrado too. I believe LVG genuinely did want to assess the squad which has delayed any signings up until this point. They clearly aren't panicking, based on LVG's 24 hour comment, so neither am I.

The 24 hour comment says to me that perhaps deals are already agreed in principle, but they can be pulled out of at any time.

Though like i say, a deal can be done in 24 hours if we really needed it to be.

If we sign a decent player in the next 48 hours, I'll buy all 3 of the United jerseys for this season with my first paycheck.

The season has already fecking started. Why are we always working to a 31st August deadline?

The deadline should have been last week, so the players were ready for when the season started, which is the important thing!

How pathetic is it that our main target for defence (after Hummels which was never going to happen) was Vermaelan, we failed to get him, then went to Rojo, and again, apparently now failed to get him despite him handing in a transfer request and refusing to train. And whenever we actually get linked with good players like Benatia or Vidal, all we do is completely deny any interest in them. Makes no sense.

The ineptitude of our club to make signings is an absolute joke. Ironically if Moyes was still in charge we may actually have brought more players in and shifted out some of the deadwood, albeit with a rubbish manager. Now we've got a class manager with a sub-par squad.

Can't remember the last time we had the best of both worlds.

Take that any day of the week, give Moyes all the stars in the world and we'd still have been crap, I firmly believe that, LvG will only improve us, albeit he needs some players in.

I can see a lot of people changing their mind about transfer fees. At the beginning of June you could’ve seen people discussing how much player X is worth, some mentioning other players who would probably have been cheaper.

Today, (almost) everyone says “I don’t care how much we pay, just get him”.

I never really understood why people care so much about transfer fees to be honest.

Can't believe we are here again after what happened last season. Another panic buy hours before the window closes?

If we signed Vidal, Di Maria, Rojo and Benatia we will have a solid squad again. We need at minimum three of these four

With Van Gaal starting late it was important that he had a clear understanding of the squad - it's strengths and capabilities

As poor as Moyes was he targeted players like Fabregas, Coentreau, Kroos, Khedira and Shaw and Herrera - all of whom would have been very good signings for us

I can't comprehend how we have a situation where we haven't replaced Rio or Vidic - I find it hard to believe we haven't added another midfield player and wide attacking player and shipped out dross like Nani, Anderson etc....

It is simply incompetence on a level I've never witnessed as a Manchester United fan and if we miss out on the top 4 it will set us back even further when trying to attract talent - the fans deserve better

If we got two out of that list at the end of the window I would be surprised.

We'd still be crap. I reckon we need Iniesta, Messi, Ronaldo and Modric to even have a shot at top 8.

Would love all 5, but If we sign even 4 of those five players I'll personally buy you a United shirt. Won't happen.

I hope you're right mate, that's for sure.

I truly believe that if our owners aren't ready to spend the kind of money to acquire the top talents and players, the kind of players that Chelsea and Manchester City signed to compete for the league title, we will keep struggling. This would have never been an issue if we were ready to go the extra mile on players like Hazard, Lucas, Nasri, Martinez, Sanchez and many others which we failed to sign because of financial restraints.

He's already got a better team to start with than Moyes so why does he get the excuse of needing better players?

p.s don't disagree but do think LvG is getting the benefit of the doubt that Moyes didn't get.

Woodward so vocal early on in the window. Now nothing!

I do expect something to happen this week on one of these deals. I also think Blind and Rojo will be here by end of window.

Not sure if that makes it a good window or not, compared to competitors, compared to targets fans wanted and world class players being bought in. Guess time will tell.

How do you come to this conclusion? Evra v Shaw is pretty much a draw and he doesn't have Ferdinand and Vidic which has at least as much negative impact as having Herrera has positive.

LVG's plans and tactics looked a mish-mash-mess in his first competitive game in charge.

He started with 3 CBs against a lone striker. Then he abandoned this plan after just 45 minutes, despite having made it a focal point of your pre-season games. He then cast Young (an attacking player) into the LB role and at the same time abandoned the idea of playing with two strikers, replacing Hernandez with Nani. Then came his trump card ... Herrera replaced by the donkey.

Is this was moyes, fans would be asking for his head

If LVG were to struggle - people will give him the benefit of the doubt because he has a proven track record of managing big clubs, building teams, managing quality players and ultimately winning things.

When Moyes struggled - there wasn't really anything in his past achievements that we could take reassurance from.

Even if the above was true, I think Vidic and especially Ferdinand were liabilities themselves. We now have Mata integrated into the team, Fletcher back and fighting fit, Januzaj/Welbeck/Jones/Smalling with a seasons more experience.

Most of all though the players are no longer sulking at the loss of Fergie.

Four is about right. At least three. 2 defenders and at least a midfielder.

Top players is the part here that we should focus on. We need players who will come into our starting 11 and make a difference. Not more squad players that are just different to what we have. And that's the slight worry with some of the players we are being linked with. However it's getting to the point now where we're lowering our standards just because we need something.

Which is again the worry with Woodward and transfer windows.

Did anyone hear Rene on Talksport this morning? He was furious about Moyes saying he had asked him to stay on. That he did but then told him that Moyes was going to do all Rene's duties himself. He had no choice but to leave as he had nothing to do.

1 CB, one CM, and one winger I'd say. ANother CB would be good but not that necessary imo.
The odd thing is that if we get rid of the dross, combined with vidic, Ferdinand and Evra leaving, it would have freed up such a huge amount of wages, I don't think 3 big signings should be any issue.
