Manchester United transfer news and rumours for summer 2014

Teams don't fear us much these days. Surely people noticed in Fergie's final season mid table sides started coming to Old Trafford with more confidence and even outplayed us but due to Fergie's genius ability to grind out results we still won.

If we don't add quality players this window I fear we might not make top four, we'd be only an injury or two in midfield or defence away from a crisis. Are people really expecting Herrera to single handedly transform our porous midfield to match the better teams? We have three injury prone defenders still adjusting to a new system we can't expect them to stay fit and Keane and Blackett as back ups doesn't exactly fill me with confidence.

It's really mind blowing when I see some posters here claim we strengthened from last year and we are good enough for top four. I know there's the LvG factor by my god even him with Jose and Pep as his assistants won't have the magic formula if god forbids an injury to Herrera or injured already Carrick and only Celverley and Fletcher who I'm still a suspect of him fully coming back to his previous best are left to cover. I'm not even going to bother mentioning Afro man and Anderson who by all accounts seem to be completely out of any future plans and rightfully so.

We have strengthened we've got shot of Moyes and his "try" Philosophy and have brought in someone who with an average team whipped the hell out of the Euro and World champions 5-1 with players like Ron Vlaar.

With the current squad I expect us to compete for top 4. Perhaps get 3rd.

We need Vidal, a wing back/winger and a center back to compete for the title imo.

I think that is a reach. Liverpool might have dropped a notch losing Hannibal Lecter but Arse and Chelsea are improved (on paper) and City are champions. Third? Not without more additions.

It'll be really, really difficult. You can't underestimate how light we are in midfield and defence.

Isn't there some cheap South American player still in their league we can take a punt on in these positions FFS? We can't go into the season the squad as it is.

The squad we have right now, will have to put up one hell of a fight to get 4th, add Vidal and one or 2 others and it will still be hard, for me 3rd would be a massive bonus.

You're overestimating our ability and depth. One bad injury to Smalling, Jones, Evans, Herrera or Shaw is all that would take for our season to be over and 3 of those players don't have a stellar fitness record. Had we kept Rio, Vidic and Evra we would have been good to go but not now. We need signings, top signings.

Would prefer our Youth be given a go if we can't get any top names in, Tyler Blackett looked exceptional on Tour and Ben Pearson and Saidy Janko could be brought through along with Wilson.

I am now officially clueless as to who we're going to sign.

I've decided that we're not actually in for Vidal. I just can't see us splashing £40million on a 27 year old who may have long-term knee issues. I really don't.

Anything that happens between now and deadline day will only surprise me.

Then we might not get fourth again, with the penalties on the new shirt deal next season, we have to get into the CL. We don't and it will get harder and harder to sign quality players. Yes blood some kids but in the cups. I would only put Wilson into the first team squad as 4th striker to get him experience. This isn't The Class of '92, we fail and it could be a disaster.

Someone average like Blind or de Jong on deadline day. That'll be it, no Vidal and no Cuadrado. I'm not at all convinced we are in for either of them to be honest.

When I said 'compete for top 4' I'm basically sitting on the fence and mean I expect us to finish 3rd - 5th with the current squad. 4th or 5th being most likely, unfortunately.

I expect us to bring in at least one center back, so I'm not too worried about the current lack of depth because of our lack of European fixtures. I think this will mean we see fewer injuries than in the past and previously injury prone players could go on long injury free runs. However we don't have the quality to finish above 3rd at the minute and are very unlikely to see 3rd either. Even 4th is relying on Liverpool struggling with the additional European fixtures, that the vast majority of their squad haven't experienced.

I put my bet on Di Maria and bunch of average like Blind on last day( with extra fee).

I think we're interested in both but due to Vidal's injury worries we won't risk it.

Cuardrado will want a move to Barcelona feck I've seen rumours he'd rather stay in Italy then move to United.

Don't you think the relatively high turnover in the dugout has contributed it's fair share in the lack of decisive action ? This is one of the implications of the Moyes fiasco, imo and I hope to God that next summer we are more settled .

We would think with VG at the helm, there would already be decisiveness, but here we are august 10th and the problems have yet too be solved in the squad, and we desperately need a midfielder and defender atleast this summer

You really think we strengthened? We lost Rio, Vida, Evra and some extant Giggs and we only added a player who you are judging to be a wrold beater based on pre-season performances and an 18 year old left back with no quality cover for both. An injury to these two alone and our season is in danger, never mind injury prone quad of Rafa, Jones, Smalling and Evans.

And I really don't think our midfield is an area for debate.

Well it's all down to Van Gaal I guess, but it's looking likely that he wants youth brought through that can learn his system so there's going to be a lot of disappointed supporters come transfer deadline day.

Feel the same too, so confused and getting really mad. The whole world can see where we lack why can't the people being paid millions to put it right do so ? Truly if we go into the season with Jones, Smalling and Evans as our only senior central defenders we are like lambs to the slaughter, we will be done for the season by November.

I know United have stopped briefing the media hence less from talk from the likes of Odgen, Ducker ect.....but I honestly think it's quiet because well nothing is happening in regards to transfers.

We're even struggling to ship out the dead weight Anderson, Nani and Fellaini are still here one week before the league starts.

No I'm stating my opinion based on our managers performance at the World Cup with an average Dutch squad and his ability to bring through youth players.

I'm sure Woody would be able to find other sponsors to fill the hole but we will certainly fire LvG if that happens and the good players that we have will begin to look elsewhere for CL football. We really can not afford to allow this bleep to develop into a habit or a very distinct possibility .
I can not stress enough the importance of a settled management team going into next summer . We can't afford another year where we are virtually starting over again, we need to confine this period to the history books and go back onto a growth trajectory in football terms. The team can grow with such glaring weaknesses in defence and midfield.

You need quality and depth the succeed in the PL, you can't judge a seven game maximum competition to a rigorous 38 games campaign, I never bought that argument.

Even without CL and less travel you would still have to factor in the FA and the League cup games.

I hope when LvG spoke to the players individually, he told them straight who he wanted to say and who he didn't. It will be a problem if some didn't take a hint about less playing time and just told him they want to fight for their place. I hope he got straight to the point and didn't give them that option.

Oh yes you need depth, the defence and midfield have problems for different problems.

The defence is lacking more quantity than quality, it does need quality, has I am not over convinced with jones smalling and Evans. Has it stands we have 5 first team defenders, 1 of them is an 18 year old fullback. So there is a lack of numbers too choose from

CM is lacking quality, we have the numbers and the overall quantity. cleverly fletcher Anderson fellaini, when you look beyond Herrera and Carrick, for the rest, none of them are good enough especially Anderson and fellaini.

There's almost four weeks left. We still have the time to make significant moves in the market. I'm not suggesting that we will, but I don't think it's time to panic just yet. That said, Gary Neville's comment about the clubs who make big moves around deadline day generally being the badly run clubs might be pretty relevant in a few weeks time.

- Vidal wants to play for us but is injured
- Di Maria wants to play for PSG
- Cuadrado wants to play for Barca and we only want him if we can't get Di Maria
- We can only afford hummels if we don't buy Vidal (made that bit up), vermaelen would have been cheaper and acceptable/ preferable alternative but he went to barca
- We only want Blind if we can't sign Hummels

Gonna go to the last day.

Even more disappointed come May and we are sitting outside the top 4 again.

Sounds like a complete mess

Can someone explain the benefit of leaving all your deals to the last day of a transfer market? lots of clubs seem to do it but the negatives seem to vastly outweigh the positives.

One of the explanations is probably to give the other club time to find proper replacement but no matter what, deadline day is a fickle matter, indeed.

Clubs like Real Madrid or even Bayern doesn't give two fecks about waiting to last the minute. They just send an offer for who they need and continue to negotiate to the most satisfying effect.

All gone very, very quiet.
Sunday's are always super slow. Nothing happens at all.

I'm done with all this now, I just want the window to close and the Premier league to start so I can stop thinking about transfers. I suspect we'll sign one or two more in the coming weeks but if we don't, we don't and I don't care. That's where I'm at with all this now.

I think transfers have replaced the actual game of football for some folk. The start of the season is the end of theirs.

Van gaal as gone on record saying he needs a quality winger like di Maria !!
WELL GO AND SIGN THE RAT FACED FECKER FFS !
