Manchester United transfer news and rumours for summer 2014

Outside of Nani and Fellaini, why would any of them go? We need Cleverley for squad depth and the rest of them have all been great in pre-season.

Pre-season's hardly a good basis to go off for judging players, they've been here long enough and it's pretty evident most aren't good enough. A few decent games in pre-season shouldn't change that.

I completely disagree. This is a new manager and they've impressed. They deserve the chance to show they can continue this form into the season. Plus the majority of the players you listed have been very unfortunate with injuries. Selling Fletcher certainly makes no sense as it's a position we're lacking in and he has looked superior to almost every player in that position. Not to mention that when at his peak, Fletcher was among the best players in the world in his position. Young has been our best player on tour and deserves to be rewarded for that. Van Gaal will judge these players himself and clearly Young is one who has stepped up to the challenge. Kagawa was fantastic at Dortmund and though he hasn't consistently produced at Utd he has still played some very good games for the club and has again, been unfortunate with injuries. He's looked great in pre-season and strengthens our squad immensely. You should be supporting these players not wishing them to do poorly. That's a scummy move as far as I'm concerned.

Where am I wishing they do poorly?

Wasn't on about Kagawa either as I don't think he should be sold. All I'm saying is we go through the same thing most pre-seasons with players where we think they've found a new lease of life and will be a revelation and finally step up to it but 5 months later everyone's wishing they're sold again. We've enough players in the squad who've more than had the chance to prove they're worth something over the course of seasons and haven't, being above average in some shite meaningless friendly shouldn't mean we overlook the poor performances we've seen them put in for god knows how long.

I think we should be letting Nani, Hernadez, Fellaini and Anderson go, mainpy because they don't fit the system and the first three have decent market value.

I'm not that enthusaistic about keeping Cleverly,Young and Valencia either but due to lack of depth in their positions they should probably get one more chance.

We still need to add another CB and CM.It would be foolish to start the season with just 3 senior player for each, especially as we are playing 3 at the back.A RWB would also be nice as I'm worried Rafael will continue to be plagued by injury problem.

I really think we are going to sign someone this week. I think we have been working quietly on a few deals but didn't want to finalise and announce because we were away and because of Van Gaal wish to assess the squad. When was the last time we or anyone else bought a player while on tour?

The media know nothing so hopefully we might have a deal or two announce after we return from tour.

Err.... yeah because Pogba knew he was leaving and the club had nothing to do with it. It's also already been mentioned that Ferguson broke habits to ask Giggs and Scholes how the dressing room would react to bringing in Van Persie.

Ferdinand has said loads of times on Twitter that the club don't tell the players anything and the summer is just as exciting to them as it is to any other fan.

Point still stands Pogba told him & someone told him about RvP, your point of it "never" happening doesn't stand up!

Well Pogba was leaving the club so it's hardly a case of United players having inside knowledge of incoming players.

Don't even think Woodward knows who's coming in, let alone the players.

I like how you completely fail to acknowledge he got RvP correct. I wonder why you just focus on Pogba? Lol. Let's not forget never is always never!

I've already covered that. Ferguson said he went to Scholes and Giggs and asked their opinion on how it would effect the dressing room.

How about acknowledging that Ferdinand said that the players have absolutely no inside track on transfers?

So Sir Alex asked 2 players about a signing & Rio said the players don't know, very contradicting examples you're using! I even know the bit about he told Rooney to leave signing players to him.

Do you really think the players never know anything? I bet all the England players knew Shaw was incoming!
And still "never" doesn't sit right with me!

If all the England players knew Shaw was coming in, why did none of the journalists know it was all wrapped up pre-World Cup?

You don't think they have journalists they keep sweet with information in order for good press? They wouldn't have text a mate and told him to put a ton on Shaw to United?

If the players knew, so would everyone else.

Going round in circles here, you cannot prove United players have "never" been told. But you admit Giggs & Scholes were told, this contradicts what you're saying.
I suspect Smalling told kingjonno, about RvP signing. But cannot prove it. But there is a strong possibility that Smalling knew long before the media picked the story up!

A journalist was on TalkSport this morning talking about transfer rumours. Talked quite a bit about United and LVG. No mention about Vidal strangely but he said that the two players we are after are Hummels, but no CL may be a problem there, and Vermaelen although Barca have also lodged a firm interest in him and Arsenal would prefer to sell to the Catalan giants.

If Hummels was a realistic target then surely the issue of whether an absence from the CL was a red line would have been addressed at a very early stage of the negotiations. On the one hand the journalist is claiming to have an insight as to who our targets are, yet on the other doesn't have any insight on a key potential stumbling block.

I really do hope that returning to England will precipitate a lot more transfer business, especially if LVG has decided the future of some of our fringe players.

Is Daley Blind not a very likely signing? As he covers two positions, cm and lb, if we are not signing Vidal surely we must be going to wait for Strootman either in January (for astronomical money) or next summer, in the meantime signing Blind would give us Fletcher Herrera Carrick Blind and whoever is left after the cull. After seeing him in the World Cup I think he looks such a handy player to have in your squad. Also he knows what LVG is looking for so would need less time to learn the style than others. Has he been linked with anyone else since that Barca stuff a while back? If he is going to leave Ajax surely it will be now.

Covers LCB at a push too. Thought he was nailed on myself too but perhaps the need isn't as great for a left wingback with Young and James emerging as decent back up for Shaw.

Maybe but with 433 being LVGs preference methinks he should get the players to play it in place when they are available. He needs his all rounder in midfield and that player may prove difficult to aqquire but in the meantime Blind seems a good fit in areas we are not hugely strong in. I loved that take down and smash into the top right in the WC, just so natural for him. I hope we get him in.

Alright, so after this fantastic pre-season tour in the USA, I would say our defensive options are fine and I would rather give more playing time to Blackett who looks great in LCB position than buy Vermaelen.

I have changed my mind and I would say we need only one defensive-minded midfielder.

EDIT: Well I think we are well stocked with players who can play wingback, still a CB is needed.

I think the first half proved that our defensive options are far from fine. Smalling put in a performance that was impressive mainly because of lack of help he received from his other defenders.

Blackett has looked good but, as LvG said, that doesn't mean he can be consistently good when the league starts.

One/two defenders and a CM needed, I think.

Am I the only one that wants us to keep Fellaini?

I still remember him being quality for Everton, eventhough he had a few different positions further up the field.

Let's hope he can turn his fortunes around, but unfortunately due to a poor first season and his association with the Moyes era, he looks doomed.

He can do one for remembering me of Moyes alone afaic. Also he's a bit shit.

Who's going to leave? For me preseason has changed the fate of Young, and Fletcher may well now get more game time I think he always would have been kept for experience.

I'd still say it is - Ando, Nani, Fellaini

I think Hernandez may look to go, and Kagawa could go if we sign someone attacking. Similarly Cleverly will if we sign another CM.

Kagawa has done okay. But LVG himself has said we have a lot of forward players.

Other than that, I think the rest will be loans....Zaha, Lingard, Keane or Blackett maybe. Even Wilson/Lawrence maybe.

We might still break even in this window. We have spent around £28m on Shaw and Herrera each and will very likely get around £12m - £15m for Hernandez and the same for Kagawa if he leaves as well as a decent fee (around £6m IMO) for Nani and some pocket change for Anderson (£4m or around that if he leaves for Turkey/Russia/Brazil which is probably the only direction he can go to). We have also received a small £3m fee for Bebe already and around £3m for Evra too as far as I remember. We could well take our earnings to £45m - £50m with some decent negotiating and it'd be a spectacular financial success to barely spend a penny in this window. If we sold Fellaini to Napoli instead of loaning him out we'd have made a profit actually with all other departures.

Our wage bill will have been reduced by £1.5m or more a month - assuming Rio and Vidic were at around £80k to £100k a week, Evra, Kagawa, Nani and Hernandez earning between £50k and £70k and Anderson being on £40k or something. Even a very careful estimation gives us a £400k a week savings and we're not paying Herrera or Shaw more than £70k a week I think. £12m - £15m saved in just a year, we're in for a marvelous transfer window from financial perspective. When you look at it like that we've done extremely well and are bound to do even better by the time window closes.

Plus we sold Buttner! And might get a small loan fee for Fellaini.

CB an CM sound about right. Ideally it would be Hummels + Vidal but its more likely to be Vermaelen + de Jong. It's such a shame Strootman's been injured.

I'd take Lingard and Blackett up in the first team, they looked really good.

Nani, Zaha, Fellaini and Anderson should go for me, either being sold or loaned out but not in the first team next year. The other youngsters James, Wilson, Lawrence, Will keane, Henriquez, Powell etc should be loaned out, only Keane I would consider for centreback cover if we can't bring in a good CB by the end of the summer.

Kagawa and Herandez may still be sold, but I'd only let them go if we get a substantial offer them or if they could be used as a makeweight to land one our targets, otherwise I'd keep them. Herandez will play alot more in the 5-3-2 system since it utilises 2 strikers and I think Kagawa can still grow alot under LVG and become a much beter player for us. Selling them now for a low amount would just be stupid I think.

Cleverley has disappointed me again on the tour, I just don't think he is good enough and I think we should sell or loan him out if we manage to attract another CM this summer, if not best keep him as cover.

I don't think we need anymore attackers (strikers or attacking midfielders), I think with Shaw, rafael, Young, Lingard, Valencia we are fine on the wings so don't need to anybody for that position. It is for central midfield and centreback that we need to sign some players. I don't want us to settle for a cheap cover up, if we attract somebody they should represent added value for the team. For midfield I'd look at Vidal (obviously) but other targets are Strootman, Khedira, Javi Martinez or maybay Carvalho. For the centreback the obvious target is Hummels, alternatives are Benatia or maybay Subotic, Vermaelen I'd only consider if the price is low and our medical staff gives a good outlook on his injurry record, another player worth considering (who won't cost the earth) is Rami or in the end we could still just decide to pay the release clause of Mirranda or see if we can't lure away Marquinhos from PSG. If we manage to get a CM and CB I'd say we are done for the summer.

I forgot about a £4m fee for Buttner.

So:

£4m for Buttner with £20k a week off the wage bill
£3m for Bebe with £15k a week off the wage bill
£3m for Evra with £70k a week off the wage bill

Presumably:
£6m for Nani with £70k a week off the wage bill
£15m for Hernandez with £50k a week off the wage bill
£15m for Kagawa with £70k a week off the wage bill
£4m loan fee for Fellaini with £70k a week off the wage bill
£0m for Ferdinand with £100k a week off the wage bill
£0m for Vidic with £80k a week off the wage bill
£4m for Anderson with £50k a week off the wage bill

£54m in transfer fees with wage bill reduced by around £600k a week. That'd make it one spectacular transfer window IMO in terms of revenue. We'd basically break even on transfer fees and save up to £20m a year on wages assuming Herrera and Shaw both earn around £70k a week.

You missed Giggs (wages)

You missed Giggs (wages)

Another £80k a week off the wage bill here, £4m a year savings although he has stayed on as a coach and I imagine will be on significant wages still (nothing remotely close to his previous salary mind).

You can add 1 million dollars to the transfer kitty for winning the International Champions Cup

I don’t think Hernandez suits this system, no point in keeping him for another year IMO.

Kagawa has done okay. But LVG himself has said we have a lot of forward players.
That makes no sense… We have a lot of options in attack. Rooney, RVP, Welbeck, for the front two, Mata, Kagawa, Januzaj for no 10 position. Even if Kagawa goes (I hope not) we will be fine offensively.
