Manchester United transfer news and rumours for summer 2014

Don't you just love the silence about United's transfer activities and linking to legions of players ? Almost refreshing.

Whether we deny everything (ie SAF) or shout it from the rooftops (ie Moyes) the situation at the club remains the same - every summer linked with a genuine world class player and every summer we miss out

Not sure why anyone continues to buy into it anymore tbh, we're done now this summer

I'm wondering if we've actually got any other targets - that is, assuming Vidal really is a target.

I don't believe for a second LVG turned down Kroos so I'd wager he was first choice but turned us down when Real showed an interest, I suspect Vidal was second choice and we've refused to pay what Juve want (which is suspect is upwards of 40m and not the 30m odd the papers are saying)

So no I doubt we have anymore targets

I think Kroos was our top target as well, we got rejected and tried to save face by leaking that LVG wasn't interested. I still think we will get a couple of decent players in though, as woowar and the rest know that we can't afford another season out of the top 4.

Done now ? Herrera and Shaw doesn't look like something straight from Van Gaal's wish list.

We didn't even start I think.

I've posted in another thread:

22nd of May the media is briefed that Van Gaal had no intentions of buying Kroos. He was a Moyes target and we won't be following it up.

23rd of May, Kroos comes out and denies that he ever had any intention of moving to United and that he has always intended to be at Bayern for next season.

Then finally Real show their interest (my guess is that it was drummed up by their agent once the United deal fell through) and he moves there.

He had been fishing for a move for a long time to get the wages he knew he could get elsewhere and that Bayern just weren't willing to offer.

Van Gaal clearly pulled the plug.

I think there's more to this than merely our incompetence in the market, I really do. Two instances:

1. Certain types of excellent players are quite willing to overlook what is normally (for them) a highly important factor: location. For example, has anyone ever really believed that Yaya Toure actually wanted to sign for Manchester City? And that he really wants to be there? But, pay a ludicrous wage to them, and these types of players forget their doubts (at least for the time being). Despite their undoubted talent, that kind of player is exactly the opposite of what SAF wanted at the club...and SAF was a good judge of player-personalities.

2. Similarly, certain players are quite willing to overlook the farcical state of certain glamorous clubs. For instance, Real is routinely labelled a 'circus'...yet players flock to them regardless. Barca has practically become FC Messi...yet, again, they queue up to sign. Whether a club has a glorious history (like Real's) or no history at all as a major club (think: PSG), a certain kind of player puts aside their doubts and signs up. In conclusion, whether for mercenary reasons or for hitherto untapped Romanticism, often the finest footballers overlook the best qualities of Manchester United FC...and this isn't always our club's fault.

Think we swiftly addressed a glaring need at LB and CM with Shaw and Herrera, there is still a glaring need at CB imo and anything outside of that will be "optional" and "maybe" and most likely happen later in the window after the tour when LVG has had a chance to assess the squad, but defo priority signing for me is a top centre half.

When you take in the fact that they are completely different players. Your theory doesn't quite add up.

Regardless of who we did or didn't have as targets and whether we pulled the plug or were snubbed, that's history now and largely irrelevant.

It increasingly looks to me, though I'd love to be proved wrong, that we won't be signing any world class players - more likely a few average international class to fill the spaces that need filling.

The Mirror and the Express have sold half of the team saying at least ten players are for the chop.

Which would make for an extremely underwhelming summer. We deserve three big signings more.
3 big signings more? Nah. We made good moves so far. The most important was sacking Moyes. Then we signed Van Gaal. Then Shaw and Herrera. Just one more big name signing to cap it off and we should be ready for the new season.

We need to. The squad is far too big for a season without European football. Otherwise, there will be a lot of highly paid players sitting around moaning unless we rotate the team unnecessarily. We could lose 10 comfortably, and that's without any further signings.

Whether we need any more signings probably depends on the formation Van Gaal wants to play and whether we have the right players to fit into that. We may know more after the presser at 3pm.

You are batshit crazy, as per usual. We have already made two big signings, even if we don't get any more players until the end of Summer it will have been a decent transfer window.

I think we have one more big money signing left - Carvalho or Vidal could be the name - and one or two smaller deals (De Vrij, Blind, Vermaelen etc.).

Some people play Football Manager too much. They'll all about big and marquee signings..

and we DESERVE not one, not two but three more signings. We deserve it.

LVG Is not Moyes who needed 7, 8 signing to get him going ( luckily it never came to that ), LVG will now how to work with present squad + 2, 3 more players and minus some deadwood.

Mata, Herrera, Fellaini, De Gea, RVP, Shaw, Kagawa.... that's like 150 million right there.
Don't bother arguing with him, he moans literally all the time and is a massive muppet. No point.

tBB: Okay then. Obviously, all our readers are going to want to know if you've got any inside information on transfers.

MM: *laughs* If I did, I couldn't tell you. We have to sign pretty extensive non-disclosure agreements. I remember once there was a bottle of Tipp-Ex who let slip to a journalist that Paul Ince was getting sold. Never saw him again. I will say this, though: the phone has been very, very busy.

That entire article was beyond amusing. :D

So LvG wants 3-4 weeks to assess the players we have before deciding whether or not he wants to more. I am sure he wont need that long to figure out the midfield issue especially now with Carrick injured but perhaps he wants to see if there are any players from the youth team that could step into midfield. I reckon there isnt but maybe LvG will discover someone in that role.

One concern if he waits for too long to assess is that it would be too late to sign players of top quality in such a short amount of time. The PL starts in a bit more than 4 weeks so I hope that Ed continues to work on deals until then.

The Premier League started a month yesterday, us being first fixture early afternoon against Swansea. There really isn't 4 weeks to feck about trying to find out if Ashley Young and Anderson are good enough; they're not.

But thankfully I have complete and utter faith in LVG - he's too intelligent to rely on them and will know we are desperate for quality in defence and midfield. He played his cards close to his chest in his presser. Refreshing.

Remember reading this before but Correct me if i am wrong at previous clubs doesn't Van Gaal have a reputation of a Anti Muppet of sorts ? He'd rather at first priority work with what he has.

Hopefully he has evaluated the Midfield at a basic level atleast.

Going on what Van Gaal said today, seems it will be all quiet on the transfer front for the next four weeks at least... Bit of a pisser.

Yep. He's a training ground manager not a chequebook manager.

I genuinely think we've got some good deals done already but won't announce them as the players are still on holiday. Woodward knows how weak our first team is and how many reinforcements we need so I can't imagine that we will leave it until the last minute again.

Thats truly incredible wishful thinking mate. Why would we delay. What do we gain? The players that we might want are nothing to do with Woodward. He does the deals. Just like everyone was expecting that activity would ramp up directly after Van Gaal arrived. Why? He doesn't do the deals. If he had communicated players that he wanted, his presence at Old Trafford was completely unnnecessary.

Take his words at face value. He will evaluate and then decide. It might mean we end up going into the season with the squad we have now pretty much. Not many of us would choose that if we could influence decisions but we can't. If we can take anything from the presser today its that he is blunt and to the point. Spade a spade and all that. Maybe, despite all our wishes he really will evaluate Ashley Young, Anderson and Bebe to see if they fit his team. Who knows... they might.

LVG knows full well already the positions and players he wants and needs to bring.
However, saying he needs three weeks to evaluate the current players is the only sensible thing he can say. Every player will now be trying hard to impress on the tour to stake a place in the team.

Deals will be worked on in the background during that three weeks.

He said today that he wants to look at his current squad for the next 3-4 weeks before making any moves in the transfer market. Makes perfect sense, just a shame there was a World Cup, timing wise.

Also means we might as well relax and close the Transfers forum for a few weeks.

Yep, 's how I read the situation.

Yep.

You can just imagine if he did a Moyes and said "the players here are not good enough ..." Would go down like a lead balloon.

I fancy his coaches have been looking at a number of, if not all, the games United played last year and have briefed him on when players have looked good and when they have looked bad. Probably got an idea of which players will likely be able to follow his approach and where they feel he will need re-reinforcements.

Fancy we will do business within two weeks.

Moyes was also saying the squad is strong and Champions etc.. at the start of the season. Though he did say he would try bringing players in and their was need for mids etc..

Then he started changing his tune more and more during the season and almost made everyone beleive the squad was absolute rubbish.
