Manchester United Summer Transfer Window 2015: What do we still need?

I'm concerned that we won't be able ro get the sort of quality we need this summer.

Not because we aren't willing to cough up the big dough - it looks like we definitely are up for that - but because there are quite a lack of options. There is also a lot of competition for players.

I think we are going to continue to pay the price for not competing at the high end of the market from before Ronaldo left to the day Louis and Woody got the cheque book out.

We need a top draw attacker or two. Bale and Reus are obvious ones - not sure if they are attainable.

Schniederlin looks a good option in midfield. Ideally we would add abother top draw CM.

Right back - anyone will do!

There are lots of promising players in their early 20s who have performed well in the Bundesliga, Ligue 1, Serie A and La Liga this year, and we have tons of cash. Van Gaal just has to rank them right, which is of course easier said than done.

We're the 11th of June, and I think that the team will leave around the 7th of July for the pre season tour.

It means that we have less than a month to buy a Right Back, a Center Back, a Midfielder at least ? And probably waiting late August to buy a top target like Bale ?

GOOD LUCK WOODY

what happens when rafael misses 50% of the games like he has in the last 5+ seasons? Why not just spend 20m on a fit rb?

Rafael has just been a bit unlucky, if he could stop chucking himself into everything a little then he'll help himself no end, same goes for Jones.

I take your point about spending the money on getting a fit RB in, but there are hardly that many options about, what annoys me is that Rafael on form is a much better player than Clyne who we will likely replace him with.

Problem 1: Rafael. Has fitness issues and will very obviously be sold.

Problem 2: That midfield lacks balance. If LVG trusted a Carrick/Herrera/Mata combination then we would have seen him play them together in that way this year.

Re issue 2 that midfield could be fantastic, LvG decided the best way to go was to put Fellaini in that position last season purely as a means to an end, but there is no way this will be the long term plan. He knows Mata is a great player which is why he still played him even though his best position was taken, with a dynamic striker and wingers that are in form, it could work really well, especially as we'd have proper cover for Carrick this time round.

The issue for me is if one of them
gets injured, Rooney could go in there I suppose, or even Pereira, but for the amount of games we will have maybe we'd need another AM, dunno what to with Fellaini though.

If we sign Schneiderlin, he will start and restore balance to that midfield.
Raf's days here are over primarily due to fitness...he is a great RB, just not a dependable one.

I hope we sign Darmian or Coleman but after Alves took us for a ride I think we'll end up with Clyne.

Yeah I do too which is why I want to keep Rafael.

We really could have done with Andre Schurrle in January looking at it. If only we went for him.

Yeah I do too which is why I want to keep Rafael.

Whats the point keeping Raf if he is injured 50% of the time?
He has been here for years and it is the same story almost every season, just like LVG I am over him.
Its time to move forward IMO, Valencia is a decent backup RB/RW

Depay and now possibly Firmino....seems to be a more scattergun approach to what I was expecting to fix the more obvious flaws of the team but saying that, providing the other holes are filled I guess the order of recruits matters little.

Some 'left-field' players being heavily linked with us now - need a midfielder and a striker? Pogba and Benzema? No thanks, we'll take Firmino and Dourado!

Perhaps the Copa America is slowing down our approach for Otamendi?
Not to mention Alves taking us for a ride thus slowing the search for a RB.

Not sure why Schneiderlin is taking so long to sign tho.

We can only guess the targets though. From a fans perspective (mine anyway) I was thinking right back, centre back, the creative midfielder LVG spoke about (although Herrera for me is that) a cover for 6, and a box to box would be our priorities or indeed only buys in addition to a GK.....attacking wise I dont think we are weaker than Chelsea for example if we filled the obvious positions allowing the others to be played in position.

I am expecting Otamendi, Gundogan, Clyne and a GK (Hopefully Cech) to be signed.
I hope for someone like Schneiderlin to be signed, but I am not sure if LVG is looking for a CDM or box to box midfielder.

If Firmino is our next signing it means for me we are still 4-5 signings short to fill the holes. Just strange thats all I wouldnt have suggested that many buys this summer but hey ho.

He never spoke of one, that's a 10 and we've got plenty of them. He spoke about a midfielder to bring balance to his creative midfielders, we only have Fellaini, Blind, Carrick and in lesser ways Herrera who bring this defensive balance.

Oh I was sure he said creative midfielder which baffled me.

Why would that be? Imo if we sign Schneiderlin, a CB and a RB in addition to Depay and Firmino we will be good for the season. We would have so many midfield combinations that will serve us well for the season. We could have:
Carrick--Schneiderlin--Herrera,
Schneiderlin--Herrera--Mata
Carrick--Schneiderlin--Firmino
Blind--Herrera--Fellaini
Blind--Schneiderlin--Mata.... too many to mention. And that's before accounting for the Rooney in midfield annual festival. And there is Di Maria too.
Basically we need to sign Schneiderlin, Otamendi, a RB and a wing forward/striker who could be anyone from Firmino to Ronaldo ( not saying they are comparable but just anyone who can function in a forward trio to a high standard).
The keeper situation will sort itself out, either we sell De Gea now and purchase a capable replacement or we keep him and do it next summer.

We have 2 already. Say we need a GK and then "Schneiderlin, a CB and a RB" thats 6 signings. Not many people said that was the likely number of incomings. I'm not fussed I guess its just another huge overhaul.

Which two are those? The GK signing is not part of our planned transfer business but has been forced upon us by circumstances, so that's out because it's a one in-one out scenario. That would effectively leave us with five signings and one of those is replacing Falcao, two others replacing Evans and Rafael leaving us with the CM signing we should have made many winters ago.
Our transfer business has been virtually an exercise of cutting off infected tissue and replacing it with fresh ones whilst on the march with little time to rest and recuperate. This is why people are shocked that we have spent so much yet remain miles away from a genuine challenge, we dug ourselves into a hole and buried ourselves with shit like Bebe, Obertan, Cleverley, Buttner etc and we are paying for it now.

Valencia playing hardball.

Valencia have warned Manchester United that Nicolas Otamendi will cost them at least £36million amid reports they're preparing a bid to sign the Argentina defender.

United boss Louis van Gaal has reportedly identified the powerful Valencia centre-half as a key defensive target this summer as he bids to assemble a squad capable of challenging for the Premier League title and in Europe.

Reports in Spain claim United are preparing an offer for Otamendi, but the club's president Amadeo Salvo has warned them that they won't allow him to leave the Mestalla on the cheap.

Salvo said: "Valencia do not give in to pressure from any agent or any comments. Valencia’s position will always be the same.

"If Otamendi wants to leave he will have to say it publicly. If he wants to go he will have to come to the club, not an agent, and pay what the club decide he is worth, which is €50 million at least, and with the payment structure that Valencia decide."

At 27, Otamendi is coming into his prime and it's unlikely the fee of will put United off if they were to push through with a bid.

United also retain an interest in Mats Hummels but he seems unlikely to leave Borussia Dortmund this summer, while long-serving United defender Jonny Evans has reportedly

It doesn't annoy me because we are probably paying him 80k a week or something and he can only play 50% of games

Rafa was my favorite player but we have dropped too many points over the years because he's been missing and our second team right back isn't good enough

If clyne played every game last year at the level he played for southamptoon then he'd be a great signing I think, consistency is so important at the back and we are lacking it so much

Our defence is going to have to improve massively since we are losing an irreplacable player imo

.............................GK
Clyne.......Smalling.......Otamendi.......Shaw
......Carrick......Scheniderlin.......Di Maria
Firmino............Rooney..............Depay

Does anybody think that for £5million Alex Song would be a decent shout for a squad rotation player? he's only 27.

I dont rate Alex Song at all, if we are in the market for a CDM, I hope Schneiderlin is at the top of that list.

Clyne.......Smalling.......Otamendi.......Shaw

I see Schneiderlin as more of a Carrick Replacement and Herrera is surely to start in the midfield.
I think we are likely to line up like this for 2015/2016:

Clyne.......Smalling.......Otamendi.......Shaw
......Herrera......Schneiderlin.....Di Maria/Gundogan(?)
Firmino............Rooney..............Depay

Finally some pace and guile up front!
Rooney should put up great numbers if flanked by Depay and Firmino.
:)

I recall Sporting acting exactly the same right before Rojo was transferred to us.

Because we can happily rely on the same 11 players to compete in four competitions?
No, that's not anything to do with what I said.
I said we shouldn't sign them, not that we shouldn't have them.

Usually i would be inclined to agree with you, however, I think that he can add a little experience into the side, will be able to perform in both premier league games before big european games, he will also add an extra pair of legs into the busy christmas period and at the age of the player, the type of player and the relatively low fee, i don't see many downsides to making a cheeky move.

We have to buy a RB,CB,CM and a forward if we want to progress, I think we also need a GK and another CM but that is too much for one window so I think Valdes will get a season as number one and we will have to hope carrick can play more games next season.

The likes of Valencia, blind, young and fellaini all need to all need to be relegated to backups either by new arrivals or by the likes of shaw and di Maria improving because if that doesn't happen we will be well of the pace again next season.

Would like to see us bring in one of bale, benzema, reus, pogba or verratti but can't see it happening but would happen with more up and coming players like depay rather than players who are on the way down like falcao or alves.

It's irritating that we have to buy another keeper but it will be a necessity as Valdes as #1 would be suicidal.

GK: Lloris/Leno
CB: Otamendi
CM: Schneiderlin
CM: Gundogan
FW: Firmino

Think we'll line up like this next season:

---------------------------Valdes-----------------------
Coleman--------Smalling-------Otamendi-------Shaw
------------------Herrera------Schneiderlin-----------
---------------------------Mata-------------------------
Di Maria------------------Rooney------------Depay---

Subs:
Gk(not sure who)
Jones
Blind
Carrick
Januzaj
Fellaini
Fermino

Don't know about others but after watching a few Messi compilations every other youtube skill shows seem so underwhelming.

True but that was just an underwhelming video in general. . Haven't seen enough of him to judge but you'd think he was average based on that.

Lloris
Alves* Smalling Otamendi Shaw
Herrera Schneiderlin
Firmino
Bale Benzema* Depay
Thats the style/type of team I'd be aiming towards by end of summer. Benz and Alves not gettable imo.

I keep seeing Di Maria in peoples line ups and just keep forgetting how incredibly good he can be. We have to build around him hes just fantastic at running with the ball and can make a massive difference if we get him firing on all cylinders.

So you are suggesting 6 new first team players?
And missing out A.Young who was our best outfield player?
You do realise that no team can win the EPL with half a new team?
It will take at least 1 year to get those players working together.
The big overhaul happened last year - this year, we will only buy a few first team players, as we need to target the league title.
