Manchester United Summer Transfer Window 2015: What do we still need?

It seems that most on here see us as bringing in 1 midfield player.....

this season alone we've lost Anderson, Fletcher and Cleverley and we are so light on numbers we've had to use Rooney there and Blind is clearly an emergency measure there and not a specialist

Powell isn't goign to step up and should leave and I'm not sure Pereira is ready to step up.

The last 2 seasons have taught us Fellaini can't play there and needs to play more advanced and Di Maria has been used as awide attacking player more often than not....

with all this in mind it leaves us with a 34 year old injury prone Carrick and Herrera as specialists

surely we will sign 2 central midfield players?

I wouldn't be surprised if we start to see Pereira alot more next season. It looked like LVG was actually going to bring him on in Saturday's game at one point so he clearly has faith and trust in him.
So I think we only sign 1 midfielder, Not that I agree with that though as 2 is needed IMO.

obviously this is dependant on who and how many we sell, but id be concerned of we bought more than 4 players.

We are so used to getting our team dessimated by injuries that we feel the need for 6 CM's to cover 2/3 positions, which really shouldn't be necessary.

Look at Chelsea. Their biggest strength this year has been their lack of injuries which has made an incredibly settled squad. How many games have matic and fab missed? They've only really needed one or two players to cover. Thats what we should be looking at.

Assuming no outgoings, a RB, CM, Cb should do us

Even though I have a lot of reservations I suspect Clyne will follow Memphis in signing as soon as the season is over with Gundogan also done by early June.

That would leave a CB and hopefully another CM to be brought in. I think any other forward addition will depend on what happens with Di Maria, RvP and Falcao.

Transfer news regarding Manchester United has been so quiet since signing Memphis! There was like Hummels, Gundogan, Otamendi and so many others but now it's all gone quiet. :(

Blind played as a holding midfielder in his youth and in his last year at Ajax. He also plays in midfield for the national team now and van Gaal said he bought him as a midfielder. So he's clearly not a emergency measure, he's a multifunctional midfielder who can play leftback. We've still got Mata banned from midfield because he's not physical enough, if we buy a midfielder who can compensate this we already have that 2nd midfielder and van Gaal will have another multifunctional player, which he likes.

If we buy one 8/6 midfielder like pre-injury Strootman that should be enough.
6: Carrick, CM, Blind
8: Herrera, CM
10: Fellaini, Mata, Rooney

So it isn't set in stone we're buying 2, could happen though.

The thing was LvG might well have bought Blind as a potential #6 for the team but having now gotten a taste of what the PL is all about he could just as easily realize that he's not suited to it in this league and alter his direction accordingly. If you recall LvG has openly admitted that the pace and physicality of the PL had taken him off guard.

If only Matic was available.

Lars or Sven Bender, Christoph Kramer and Morgan Schneiderlin would be logical targets.

Just out of interest, it seems Leon Goretzka hasn't played much this year for Schalke, does anyone know why? Might be a q for Bundesliga enthusiasts like @Balu perhaps. Big powerful young midfielder that could be schooled into the van Gaal philosophy.

He's been injured for the most part.

We need 2 new midfielders, 1 holding and 1 box to box. If we sell Mata then we need an attacking midfielder as well.

Schniederlin, Pogba and De Bruyne would be perfect

based on what we need and who we been linked with.

first off i think we need a CB that no one doubts is the best at the club, we need another Herrera type midfielder that has a great first touch good defensively and can pick pass and score about 8 goals a season. A young right back that is first good defensively but not afraid to join in attack. A goal scoring winger, and a deep lying midfield defensive minded but can run a game from deap and break down opposition attacks.

with that in mind here is my list

CB Hummels (we been linked with him from last summer lvg wants him and we can get him. On form he's world class)
CM Gundogan (heavily linked has all the tools to be amazing still young and would be relatively inexpensive given his contract situation)
CDM Schneiderlin (hasn't been linked much to us but is ready made for our squad and is ready for the step up and would be our new Carrick)
RB Clyne (A safe buy. Would be reliable, consistent, premier league proven and home grown. Also heavily linked)
FW Depay ( Fast, young, hungry, super star in the making, scores goals from the wing what's not to love. Already purchased!)

This would elevate us to title contenders. Maybe not win it outright but definitely will put us on the path to eventually becoming Champions of England again. With so many signings for the past 2 years it will take time for us to get these guys playing as a cohesive team week in week out. We have to lay the foundations though that's what is important.

@bucky I see what you're going for, I am just not sure LvG will want to be quite as pragmatic as that, I could be wrong of course but I just see Shneiderlin and Xhaka being very similar and I could see him preferring another ball player or attacking threat added to the midfield than 2 more defesnive CM's. Unless of course he does intend to move to using a more traditional #10 and a 4-2-3-1 system, in which case the double pivot is needed.

That's a good point and my only worry, that both might be a bit too similar. What do you mean by ball player? Someone who dribbles more?

RB - feck knows
CB - Hummels
DLM - Shneiderlin
CM - Gundogen
STR
GK?:(

Shift Valencia, Evans, Chich, Nani, RvP, Cleverley.

Yes, someone who slips out of tight situations and can carry the ball up field, kinda like Modric and Verratti do, and Gundogan did more often before his back issues.

Lose RVP & Falcao & Hernandes - Sign Lacazette and Vietto
Lose Evans and Rafa - Sign Hummels and Clyne
Lose Clevs - Sign Gundogan
Sign Carrick rotation player Scheniderlin.

Close eyes and hold arms out in front until trophies are placed in them.

Still a lot of work to do this summer if we want to get back the Premier League. We don’t have to be better than Chelsea, but better than Arsenal and City too. By that I mean that we must have better players for almost every position than them, and especially having a better organization.

Organization :

We are far better than last year or in September, but I think that like Van Gaal said, we’re still unbalanced. Our full back never flows behind our wingers, Valencia and Shaw seemed to be asked to stay put. When I see Alves and Alba, or Marcelo and Carvajal, they provide something else to the organization that we are not doing enough….

Back in the Premier League, we must admit that we must be better in terms of organization than Chelsea. They’re well placed and their defensive block is just unbelievable, I don’t really see us or City or The Arse beating them in that. Van Gaal 4-1-4-1 is far too rigid, but in the wrong sense, that we have no imagination, we don’t take risks… maybe we lack talent, but I don’t see us as strong as Chelsea, or as fluid as Arsenal in their balance. They may have lower individualities than Chelsea, but Wenger built a very well balanced team with a lot of complementarities, especially in the middle… I still think that they can improve on the wing when they lose the ball, but I can see them better organized than us.

The organization goes with a strong defensive line, and unless we buy TWO top central defender and ONE defensive midfielder, a la Carrick, but fitter, we won’t reach the top.

Individualities:

We need to have better players. I’m sorry we spent something like 230M in two years, but we still look average in front of some of the Chelsea player for example. Their defensive line is far above ours, and we need 3 defenders to reach them…. Ok Smalling can potentially be as good as Cahill, but I can’t see any of our defenders been as good as Ivanovic and Terry (I say also that Shaw can match Azpi).

In midfield, Carrick can be as good as Matic, even better but can we still rely on him at 34? Arsenal and City have issue also here, but a deep lying midfielder is needed… I’m unsure about the profile. If it has to be a strong one like Busquets, a technical one like Kroos (or Gundogan), or only a substitute to Carrick (like Nijel De Jong could be), we have to spend big and wisely here.

Do we have an Eden Hazard? An Alexis Sanchez, Mesut Ozil or a David Silva and Fabregas? I imagine that with Mata and Di Maria and it should be enough to match their individualities here, but what about the balance of the team ?

And upfront, we have a collection of supposed talent, but Giroud has 20 goals, Diego Costa was marvelous the first part of season and Kun Aguero shows that he’s one of the best in the world…. We are short of talent here and I’m sorry but Rooney, Van Persie and Falcao are passed, and we should, maybe not this year, try to sign a great forward like Chelsea or City has.

My team for 2015/20016 à I keep in mind that Woodward would like to have a top top signing also (hope Bale)

Carvajal : exchange with De Gea
Hummels : 35M
Gundogan : 20M
Depay : 30M

I like this. I like this a lot

I think once the 4th position is achieved, as in mathematically impossible for L'pool to catch, Woody would then proceed to announce one or two of his surprises.

Woody: "Watch this space" ;)

Actually a good thing that we're back to keeping everyone in the dark and guessing like we were under Gill and Fergie. Woody's first season was horrific; "WE WANT HIM. TAKE OUR MONEY WE HAVE LOTS"

Just reading on the BBC Football website about Toby Alderweireld.

What would everyones thoughts be on him? Always impresses me when I watch Southampton!

Good physical defender, has got that "Phil Jones" vibe. But I don't think he has the leadership quality that we need at the back.

So if Mitten is right on this, who do we reckon? My guess would be Gundogan and Clyne, though maybe Hummels as recently it's looked like Clyne will extend with Southampton.

James Wilson? Despite United's striker troubles, he's started just twice. The 19-year-old is not the player Van Gaal wants him to be and actually got admonished for dribbling in training in February.

This is the stuff that worries me and part of why I think Di Maria is struggling, LvG seems to want pre-programmed players, no freedom even for the attackers.

Stuff of nightmares for flair players. Dybala would be as useless for us, good that he isnt here. Hope we get him after a few years when Van Gaal isnt here anymore.

Maybe there was a better option and he has chosen to dribble instead? I imagine most of our players get admonished during training for one reason or another.

You have to evaluate the situation. Why dribble when a pass could be the better option?

Judging from the press conference today, it's obvious we're gonna be busy this summer, van gaal doesn't think the current squad is good enough to challenge for titles. I expect at least 5 signings this summer, maybe even more depending on the situation with de gea, van persie and falcao, and whether we're thinking about loaning adnan, pereira and wilson or not.

van Gaal has worried me a bit with his talk about transfers being difficult, 3 parties involved, saying he can challenge only if he is able to bring in balance to the squad and all that stuff. This isn't Sir Alex. van Gaal is usually honest about how he feels even when he talks to media.

He almost laughed off Woodward's comments of challenging on all fronts by saying its easy to just say that.

I'm over thinking aren't I?

Looks like we are losing De Gea. Ideally we bring in Cech.
We will lose Rafa and replace with perhaps Clyne.
We will lose Evans and replace with Hummels.
Defensive options will then be Clyne, Valencia, Hummels, Jones, Smalling, Rojo, Shaw, Blind and the youngsters (v good).
Midfield we need a 8 who can play 6 otherwise we are bring in 2 midfielders. Pogba Gundogan is the dream.
If we lose De Gea I can see us buying Bale from madrid. The best outcome for us.
If we lose Hernandez and Falcao I can see us bringing in a striker. We have Wilson so between him and Rooney almost finished product I suspect.

This would be the dream....if we lose De Gea!

-------------Cech
Clyne---Hummels
---Smalling---Shaw
----Carrick----Pogba----Gundogan
Herrera/Di Maria-----Rooney-----Bale

I really hope we can use DDG as leverage to secure Bale. That would be fantastic. Both would be better though, of course.

Cech would be the best option to replace DDG.

I suspect Hummels, Clyne and, maybe, Gundgogan are close/done deals. I would expect/hope that all three could be bought for under 70m gbp.

Schneiderlin would a useful addition too.

I think you are overthinking it a bit since Van Gaal has to manage expectations and also maintain squad harmony. The way I see it is when Woodward is addressing investors he has to show them that we are prepared to spend to get back to where we ought to be, Van Gaal is the guy on whose neck the axe will fall when things go wrong so he has to preempt that by dampening expectations. Secondly LVG has the feelings of current players to consider, it's not nice to see your boss eager to replace you no matter how obvious your fate is. It's just him being diplomatic and something Woodward could learn too but in the context he was speaking he is obligated to tell the investors of any significant investments that the club is planning.

I hope you're right because there's no way we are challenging unless we sign someone to take over from Carrick, a CB and a RB.
