Manchester United Summer Transfer Window 2015: What do we still need?

Capable, perhaps, but definitely not good enough, at least not for our ambitions of being a title-winning side. The only reason I see for Hummels playing as a #6 would be if every midfielder, along with Rooney, was injured.

Anyway, I'm fairly sure Hummels will not be bought for that role.

I'd be all for playing him as a 6 if Van Gaal felt it provided the balance to play Herrera as the 8, Mata as the 10 and two attacking wide players flanking Rooney. With Smalling and Rojo behind him I think that would be a formidable side and as someone mention above would be a great 3-4-3/4-3-3 foil.

I just don't think he's got the passing ability to truly flourish in such a role. Watching a brilliant #6 in football is a fine sight, so going from Carrick to Hummels would be a bit depressing.

Can you be more specific? What element of his passing do you think is lacking?

There isn't a #6 alive that would allow both Herrera and Mata to play in a midfield 3 together.

Watched Javi Martinez highlight reel - decided he's the man to take over from Carrick.

DDG
Valencia - Smalling - Hummels - Shaw
Martinez
Mata - Herrera - Koke - Di Maria
Rooney

Subs: Valdes, Blind, Carrick, Depay, Fellaini, Januzaj

Love this. It would be total football.

I'd love to share my two cents here but having read last year's thread, I don't think anyone will come close to predicting our team.

We're not going to sign Hummels to play him in midfield, that's just daft.

Would 4 be enough? You'd imagine a centre back or two would be top of the list, a rb and winger, maybe a striker as well if we get rid of both RVP and Falcao.
4 will be enough. A center half, right back, winger and forward.

I don't think we need one at all. Blind, Carrick, Fellaini, Herrera and Mata are all good. Maybe a back up but I think we can get by with what we have.

LvG has already said his priority is a CM this summer, I don't think LvG sees Fellaini as a regular starter if we are to challenge for titles and I don't think he sees Mata as an option in midfield at all, he'll play on the right of the attack when he plays.

Then again he said that before Herrera and Mata forced themselves back into the fold, Imagine that may have changed his opinion slightly.

I think we need to start lining up a natural successor to Carrick. Blind is good and what he does but not the calming influence that Carrick is.

I said before and I will say again, I want proven top quality players. We have a good squad, what we are missing is some of the standout talents to take it up a level. City have Aguero (and Yaya/Kompany who were quality until this season), Chelsea have Hazard, Arsenal have Sanchez.

Di Maria was meant to be our answer to that, but it hasnt quite gone according to plan thus far. I dont want the standard European prospects who are tearing things up in a weak league (see Depay), I want quality. For me, the top three signings should be;

1. Bale/Sterling
2. Clyne/Coleman
3. Pogba

Bring Nani back from loan (perhaps Hernandez too), offload Cleverly, Evans, Rafael, Young (has done well but I dont think he should be a starter going forwards), Falcao - and what we are left with is a pretty damn good squad.

Mata doesn't affect the midfield though, he has gotten in playing 2 games on the right side of the front 3. We still only have 2 players in the #8 role without having to play Rooney there and neither of them fit the mold of what LvG was after.

Rooney, RVP, Wilson
Mata, Di Maria, GoalScoringWinger, Januzaj, Fellaini
Herrera, CM, Blind, Carrick, Fellaini
Shaw, Rafael, FB, Valencia OR Young (Blind)
CB, Smalling, Rojo, Jones
De Gea, Valdes

That's a nice streamlined squad that looks vaguely like the top teams' do, but with Fellaini as a plan C.

Then, in 2016, we buy replacements for the underlined in RVP and Carrick.

My guess right now would be Depay (or Madrid turn on Bale) and Hummels happen, but I have no idea for the fullback or CM. Darmian seems like a nice, versatile cheapish option for the former.

Anyone else see the reports about Hummels telling teammates while on international duty that he's off to United?

----------Rooney/Hernandez-----
-Depay/Nani----------Mata/F.Anderson
---Di Maria/Herrera-Pogba/Fellaini
-------------Carrick/Imbula--------
Shaw/Blind-Hummels/Rojo-Smalling/Jones-Rafael/De sciligio
-------------De Gea/Valdes----------

IN
Depay
F.Anderson
Pogba
Imbula
Hummels
De Sciligio

Total=150-180m.

Out
Young
Valencia
RVP
Evans
Cleverley

Total=30-50m.

Now thats a team/squad ready to challenge for the CL.

In - Bale, Depay, Hummels, RB
Out - Evans, Clev, Chich, turn back tony

Also need a striker really if Falcao and Van Persie leave.

A strong gut feeling telling me we'll sign Depay and Hummels.

Think we'll sign another two players, two of RB/CM/ST.

Agreed. Depay and Hummels seem very likely to happen. Clyne also seems like one that's going to happen. Although I have this weird feeling Dani Alves will be coming to us. L'Equipe had an article today saying he's not going to PSG. If we do get Depay, Hummels, Clyne/Alves we'd still need a CM (2 ideally imo) and a ST. Schneiderlin and Vietto would be perfect.

Yup feel these are nailed on but I'm pretty sure there'll be a big midfield signings too. Gundogan, Veratti, Pogba would be unlikely but stuff of dreams.

This will be a very interesting window. I'm really hoping for a couple of top players to join our ranks now that we seem to have ditched the no value in the market crap and are finally paying clubs what they ask from us. I'm convinced that we would have never signed Herrera, Shaw and Di Maria at their price with our previous policies.

Now we just need a CB, RB, CM and maybe a forward/winger and I think we're good to go to challenge for the title!

I'll bet you anything we buy Strootman irrespective of the current gloom and doom about his fitness. September is 5 months away, so plenty of time for him to recover.

That's possible since he is only out because he needed to get rid of scare tissues, it's not as if he had a second big injury.

I can see Hummels, Depay, Claassen or Strootman and a RB.

To be honest I'd be surprised ifwe didn't sign at least 2 out of Clyne,Depay and Hummels. The CM could be anyone schniederlin would be a good purchase.

Er wrong pal. My mate Brendan reckons Raheem Sterling the best young midfielder in the world.

You might be right, i'm not completely convinced hes a massive signing though. This guy is pushing out tweets like jordan pushes out kids though. probably all rubbish!

Haha, probably is, to be honest.

Hopefully not. Especially given the alternatives, we'd be mad to sign him. There's also better players out there than him and I'm not talking about Pogba, Verratti or Koke.

Its not about better players though, its about players Van Gaal feels can play a certain role for his team. Strootman obviously checks the Philosophy box.

Depay
Hummels
Sterling
Coleman
CM
---
Rafael
Falcao
Blackett
Wilson (loan)
McNair (loan)

Sort of like RvN then.

Or Falcao.

I am not a medical expert, but serious knee injuries and continuous recurrences are never good for athletes. At least I haven't seen many players come back to their best.

It would be beyond stupid to take a punt on him so close to his retun from injury. Forget at the ridiculous prices that are mentioned.

What is his claim to fame, anyway? Some good games in a below par Italian league for Roma before his injury?
