Manchester United Summer Transfer Window 2015: What do we still need?

I can't see two wingers coming in, not unless we are selling someone or Adnan is going on loan. I think we need 2 CM's as well if the plan is to switch to 4-3-3.

I am intrigued by what LvG does with the defense, 1 CB or 2 is the question, and unlike many I think he may stick with Valencia as his RB.

I would go for A defender, 2 CM and a winger, and the summer 2016 looking to buy a new striker

So....

-------------De Gea

People--------------------Shaw

People---------------Di Maria

Someone------Rooney----Someone

That's kinda how it feels to me, can't see how we can do it but too many players not living up to what is needed. The midfield is way too one paced, lacking in power and lacking a conductor. Rooney has made it clear he's our go to #9 but I feel we need two pacey attackers either side of him, and then there's the defense.......hard to trust any of the CB's a this point and people will be baying for a new RB as well.

Basically that. People..

We need one wc CB or even 2.
If Rafael is frozen out, which I hope he isnt, we need a RB.
We need a winger/striker sort of thing, player who can play as a striker and on the wing too and with pace. Maybe 2 of them too.

And not sure what we need in midfield, one CM who is good defensively or a true DM and one more CM..

Anyway we need a few players. :D

Now we’re not even sure to play the Europa league, can we still talk about Bale, Pogba, Reus, Varane and Marquinhos ?

NO ! Thank you Woody and Louis, but next year we’ll see a lot of players leaving because of the need to raise fund, and probably only few players coming

I see us buying Coleman, De Jong, Depay, Schneiderlein, Vlaar and Reid

That’s going to be funny

----------------------------------------------Valdes------------------------------------------------

Coleman----------------------Vlaar--------------------Reid------------------------------Shaw

If that ends up as the squad, god help us. I definitely agree with you that if we have no Europe we will not be getting the big name players everyone is craving. I would even take Europa League as foreign players don't treat it with the distain British players do.

Right back
Box to box CM
Left wing
Striker

...is the absolute minimum we need IMO, and all four need to be good enough to slot into, and improve, the first XI. That's another £150-200m.

We need young, hungry players in pretty much every position.

Also if there is even a tiny chance of capturing Gareth Bale we need to be on it.

We need to be on this from the moment the season ends, no holidays, no pissing around, get the business done quick and early.

I'd be targeting the likes of Clyne, Stones, Depay, McCarthy, Berahino, plus an experienced CB.

I would also ship out up to 7 or 8 players.

Bolding who I think we will/should keep.

De Gea - will leave to go to Madrid. Let's face it, he isn't going to sign new contract.
Valdes - will become first choice when De Gea leaves.
Lindegaard - will leave for first team football elsewhere.
Amos - not good enough, and will leave.
Johnstone - becomes second choice, possibly third if we bring in back up for Valdes.

Rafael - LvG clearly doesn't want him. He'll leave.
Shaw - Young and full of potential. Needs to stay fit and get a run of games.
Jones - I think we'll keep him, but he's never going to be good enough. Not intelligent enough.
Rojo - Best defender we have. Not that it says much.
Evans - If someone offers us money we should take it and run.
Smalling - can't control a ball. Bomb scare with the ball at his feet.
Valencia - he'll stay as back up right back until his contract expires.
McNair - seems to be the reserve defender LvG rates the most.
Thorpe - McNair and Blackett were preferred to him, no future here.
Blackett - not good enough.
James - not good enough.
Valera - won't come back from his loan.
Janko - potentially could make it, but not convinced.

di Maria - could be our best player if we played a system with pace instead of this dull possession.
Mata - he'll go for first team football. Best #10 we have, but LvG doesn't rate him it appears.
Januzaj - young and full of potential, needs to stop diving.
Carrick - best midfielder by far.
Blind - should be back up at a team like United. Too easy to get past, and no real engine. Tidy passer.
Young - he'll be here until his contract expires. No-one else would pay his wages.
Herrera - needs a run in the team. always looks for a forward pass.
Powell - attitude problems, thinks he's already made it, when he hasn't.
Fellaini - not good enough at all, and just encourages hoofball.
Pereira - won't sign a new contract with us.
Cleverley - contracts up in the summer thankfully.
Lingard - will go for his own sake. never going to be given a chance here.
Nani - can't see him coming back from his loan. someone will sign him. atletico?

Falcao - we'd be stupid to spend £40m on him.
Rooney - captain isn't going anywhere.
van Persie - as a massive fan, we should get rid. he isn't what he was anymore.
Wilson - will battle Henriquez for one of the back up forward spots.
Hernandez - he's as good as gone. wouldn't surprise me to see him in the MLS.
Henriquez - see Wilson.

when you break it down like that, we really need 5 or 6 players still.

Ridiculous that we let our squad get to this position.

We need a new defense. Our defence really just is terrible at the moment.

I think it's made to look worse by the protection they get and organisation of the team. Put Wanyama and Schneiderlin ahead of our defence, for example, and we look a lot more solid.

I also think that every time we lose, our defence will get the blame, but when you're playing with a team that has such awful approach play, and people who can't keep the ball under pressure, it exposes the defence a hell of a lot.

I think two defensive players are an absolute must, if we had two top CB's I think we could get by with our fullback options, it's the complete lack of leadership and positional nous in our CB options that makes things a mess too often back there.

The midfield is crying out for a driving force CDM and one that can dictate a game, the only CM we have that can do the latter will be 34 next season.

Up top I honestly feel we need two fast, versatile attackers to partner Rooney in a front 3, but it might end up just being one as LvG will probably demand his buddy RvP stays and we'll continue to try and use Di Maria as a forward despite the lack of goal threat.

Exactly, we definitely need a leader at the back and tbh a replacement for Carrick who is more of a leader there. Carrick is good but he is too quiet. Although if we got a good driving force CDM like you said, Herrera could be the one to do all the leading there. Also need a top quality pacy striker or two.

The one thing I worry about is what type of signings he will make, will they be ones to bring out the best in last summers signings or will they be ones to make us even more safe and pragmatic and boring.

If we screw these next few months up, including the summer transfer window, then we are probably fecked for a few years.

In
De Bruyne- £30million
Schneiderlin- £25million
William Carvalho- £25million
Godin- £20million
Coleman- £15million

Total Spend- £115million

Out
Mata- £25million
Falcao- Free
Evans- £5million
Cleverely- Free

Total- £30million

-----------------------------------De Gea------------------------------
--------Coleman----------Godin----------Rojo-------------Shaw--------
------------------------Schniederlin---W Carvalho-----------------------
-----------Di Maria---------------Herrera---------------De Bruyne------
-----------------------------------Rooney-------------------------------------

Come on man, Am I asking for too much? I know it's not as easy as Fifa manager mode, but surely for once we will just buy players in positions we need.

Anyway, Massive massive few months ahead, which will probably determine the medium term future of this club.

I'd be getting rid of Jones and Smalling as well. So a bit more money coming in.

Players like Schneiderlin, Godin and Coleman and all gettable and would improve us tremendously. IMO we should have gotten at least one of them in January...it would have really helped us solidify top 4.

We need a defensive midfielder of his mould badly. He would also provide massive balance to the middle of the park.

Sly also said he's been much better recently and has shown some of his form from last season.

For 25m you can sign Luiz Gustavo who is proven, for less you can probably sign Wanyama.

Was it just me who thought Gustavo was completely average in the World Cup? Didn't look like much of a player at all. Maybe he's different at club level, though.

He was there best midfielder outside of Neymar, he wasn't great but wasn't bad too, just very alone.

It's probably harsh to judge him on that, in fairness. The whole side was absolutely terrible (even when they were winning, I thought they were crap).

I do not think a "destroyer" is what we need in midfield. I think we need a passer who also has a bit of mobility. Koke would be the best option while someone like Xhaka would be a great back up option if we could not get Koke.

We need a leader in defense but I also think we need another CB as well, Jones and Smalling make way too many errors and have been afforded more than enough chances. In midfield I feel like if we got a powerful box to box player like Nainngolan/Schneiderlin/Allan/Xhaka etc...and a playmaker like Gundogan/Verratti/Koke it would allow Ander and Di Maria to compete for the AM spot in midfield and make us a better side all round. The pacey forwards are also a must, Rooney flanked by two pacey young attackers would change the nature of our forward play completely.

Well if LvG is actively chasing 2 CB's and a box to box CM he is on the right track IMO.

I have seen Atletico play a lot and Koke rarely plays in cm but the few times I saw him there, he was good.

Now I think that we need a CM defensively oriented, maybe someone like Saul (not defensive per se), Kondogbia, Iturraspe, Mario Suarez a player who is defensively very sound but also a good passer.

Gonalons of Lyon would be another option in that mold.

I think ideally we need a playmaker and a mobile box to box midfielder or destroyer but if we are going to move di Maria back into midfield then a more defensive player is the priority.

There are a lot of good midfielders out there, hopefully we have the sense to steer clear of the likes of vidal and strootman though.

We need a new defence, new midfield and a new attack.

Five or six first team players. They all have to be top draw.

I am not sure even £200m will cut it.

A RB, two CB's, CM, winger and a striker. Yep you are probably right.

Top quality players in those positions average around:

RB - £30m

CB - £40m - maybe more as there is a bit shortage of them right now? Evidence: Luiz, Mangala reportedly closer to 50 mil.

Winger - £35 - 80m

CM - £35-50m?

Striker - £35-Sky is the limit.

Clubs buying from a position of strength - Chelsea, Barca, Real - can get top players at £35m sometimes. We get "solid to good" players for that.

Our transfer policy post-Ronaldo to 2014 is to blame for our current predicament.

Varane - £25-30m
Pogba - £80m
Clyne - £20-25m
Dybala - £20-25m
Approx = £150m
Sell:
Fellaini - £20m
Mata - £25m
Evans - £5m
Little Pea - £10m
Approx = 60m

For approx 100m we could change to 4-3-3:

----------------DDG
Clyne-----Varanne-----Rojo------Shaw
----Herrera-------Carrick-----Pogba
----Dybala------Rooney-----Di Maria

If we're signing for big funds, we need clear upgrades. The first thing is just how much are we willing to spend in the off season? The americans allowed management to spend lots of funds in the off season and we're getting little, if any reward. Are they willing to invest more funds at similar risk? With the same management?

Thankfully for us there's a lot of talent around, even cheap talent too. Plus despite our team being poor we also have some good players in the dressing room that could be of use next season either as second choices of starters.

Just me who thinks we also lack a leader?

We miss someone like Ferdinand, Keane, Vidic etc who knew how to win. Rooney is our captain but he isn't a leader imo.

If we'd had Ferdinand for example, I really doubt we'd of conceded either of the goals against Arsenal. Need a leader and organiser in the side.

5 Signings, all I'm asking.

I don't see how anyone would be excited about signing new players under this manager, we signed Di Maria, Falcao and Shaw, all exciting positive players and look at how they have been used, not to mention Rafael or Herrera. What is he going to do with depay that he is not doing with Di Maria?

I echo this sentiment. If he can't make us play attacking football with Mata, Rooney, Di Maria, Herrera, Januzaj etc. then what difference will a few more shiny new toys gonna make. It would be the same shit with a different bunch of players.

His "philosophy" is this robotic football. The best Bayern poster on this site has mentioned it numerous times that it was similar shit at their club. The whole attacking and creative reponsibility lied with Robben as it does with Di Maria in our team.

And anyone who expects new defenders to come in and do much better than our bunch under such negative football is living in la la land. Van Gaal doesn't know how to organize his defense. Our vulnerability at set-pieces is a living proof of that.
