Manchester United Kits 2018/2019

I have to say I was on the fence about the kit until I saw the match. It looks really good IMO.

I sort of understand the arguments on traditional colours but I like variety and we've just tried something a bit different. Barca and Arsenal are two big, historical clubs who've done different things with their home kits in recent years; it's hardly eroded their traditions.

For example, in 10 years time it'll be 150 years since we formed as Newton Heath - I would be up for playing in Green/Gold that season as our home colours. Honouring our roots and doing something fresh at the same time (Glazers would obviously never have it though).

Agreed. Also, chill, it looks great...

Barca and Arsenal fans were quite vocal in their opposition to those changes too though, it's worth remembering.

And the green and gold halves are a bit of a myth, with no evidence for them, so I hope we don't do that. The only time we've worn green and gold halves was in 1992/93 and 93/94. Newton Heath's first colours were white and the halved kits were actually red and white (presumably in reference to the red and white roses of Lancashire and Yorkshire).

Despite my scepticism it looked pretty damn fantastic on the players the other night, one for the full-kit w*nkers this one. I suppose there won't be a white shorts+socks version though which is a shame, always love when we use that combination..

I'm looking at the following;

Home Kit 6.5/10 - I get this years home kit is slightly different, but I would brand it 'disgusting' or 'awful' by any means. Heck, it's nowhere near as bad as the 12/13 table cloth.

Rumoured Pink Away Kit 2/10 - If this is true it is absurd. Why are we getting rid of our traditional Red/Black/Blue/White kits for a PINK kit!? Unreal if you ask me.

Third Kit 9/10 - I absolutely love this years third kit. In fact, I think it's probably our nicest kit in years. I was a massive fan of the effort put into last seasons third kit however I think the blue and gold look is classy as hell - a must purchase for me!

Think it looks great on the players, and seeing as I've not bought a home shirt for 10 years, that's all I care about.

Pink kit I might actually buy, I really like it, but will probably need to see it in real life first.

Already forgotten what the 3rd kit even looks like, so it must have been pretty inoffensive!

Kits looks strange but great on players. Would have preferred the sock to just be black with red trim.

Looking forward to the pink kit. Might be the first official one I buy in over 10 years.

Very ambivalent - Overall the kit looks good with the shorts combined, but also it's weird seeing us play in black shorts

Tucked in, the shirt doesn't look too bad, as the full monstrosity of the black lines doesn't stand out as much.

The stripes on the shoulder look like they've been shoddily stuck on by a bored kid.

My understanding is the LYR company colours were Green/Gold hence the team playing in them. Do you have a source for saying it's a myth as I'd be interested to read about it?

In any event, I was using it as an example; I'm happy to change things up and I don't think it dilutes the history to do it.

You mentioned the critics at Barca/Arsenal. I've no doubt we would have them too given the reaction to this kit but my point is those clubs haven't suddenly 'changed' because of those kits and neither would we.

We definitely played in green and gold halves prior to 1992. Not a myth.

Yeah, all the earliest contemporary records of the colours were white shirts or white and red.

The livery colours of the Lancashire and Yorkshire railway were actually red and black. The club wore green and gold for a few years in the mid 1890s.

You are confusing me now.

That website is produced based on information and contributions from fans of all the different clubs by the way, it's no more reliable than Wikipedia, although it is a great resource.

There is no contemporary evidence for Newton Heath wearing green and gold halves, it's just based on stuff first written in the 1950s and repeated since then as fact.

Green shirts with gold trim were worn in 1894/95. We know this from the colours recorded with the football league (all previously recorded colours were "red and white quarters") and a team photo from that season. They were pictured and illustrated around the same time in striped shirts, which presumably were also green and gold.

It's specifically the halved shirts in the green and gold colours that there is neither written or photographic evidence for. When the team was photographed in halves it coincides with the times they were recorded as wearing red and white. Hopefully this makes sense.

Interesting to see the evidence you have that we didn't?

Oh, a book. I'm sure that beats all of the contemporary accounts, journals and official records.
So this pic in the book of the 1892 team where the kit is half and half is not to be believed?

Will we still wear white shorts at home? If so this might look strange with the amount of black on the shirt. Let's wait and see.

The site you sent me to, i went back a few pages to the 86 season and it is a green and gold halved shirt. That same kit goes back to 1881 on that site and shows an all black kit for the 1878 season.

Got to say you sound like one of them flat earthers, why would our clubs heritage all be a lie ? What would anyone gain from lying about the colour of our kits back in the day ?
Surely it would sound better to say we had a red, white and black kit from day one.

No, you're misunderstanding me. It is a photo of the club wearing halved shirts, during a season where they registered their colours with the football league as red and white halves. It is not green and gold.

You know that is my own website, right? I collaborated with a couple of other people on it, one of whom believes that they wore green and gold halves before wearing red and white, despite a complete lack of evidence for it. If you read all of it, you'll see the first contemporary mention of the club's colours said they were wearing red and white.

To me, this makes more sense as a choice of colours - to represent both the red rose of Lancashire and the white rose of Yorkshire - than green and gold, which had no meaning to the railway.
