Manchester United - January transfer window 2015 (twitter blacklist applies)

Schar would be a great signing. I would be ecstatic with that.

from what I read...

Hummels? yes, but nonsense!
Vlaar? please no!
Strootman? definately yes!
Pique or Laporte? Why not?!
Shaqiri? worth a try? I'd rather see Januzaj given game time!

Really? I mean I would like us to sign him as well, but he'd be gamble in my eyes, since he's been playing in a poor league mostly.

Currently I'd rather bring in Laporte than Hummels, even though the former is struggling more this season than last.

Obviously not on his own but he's young, he's cheap and he'd be a great addition to our squad. From what I've seen, he's already a better defender than Jones, Rojo and Evans.

True. Signing him and selling Evans would make sense.

I hope we will add Gundogan to this list.

Strootman and Gundogan would be perfect response to Fellaini and Fletcher.

Looks like it is going to be a quiet window for us.....

That would be a crime IMHO. It's one thing aiming to secure Top 4, but we could at the same time secure Top 4 and even aim higher if we get genuine reinforcements of any kind.

I suspect Valdes is the only arrival we'll see. Shame, really, reinforcements in the area we need it least.

Lucas Silva hasn't signed for Real Madrid and Van Gaal is apparently after a DM.

Imagine 10-12 months ago at the lowest point of Moyes reign. Now imagine that i told you that in under a year we'd have signed Victor Valdes, Falcao and Angel Di Maria.

Madness.

Yeah, for me it's still rather weird seeing the likes of Di Maria and Falcao in a United shirt.

I guess this time next season we will be saying the same about Messi, Ronaldo and Bale... ;)

In 2013, we signed Fellaini and Zaha and replaced Fergie with Moyes.
In 2014, we signed Mata, di Maria, Falcao and others while replacing Moyes with van Gaal.

2015 better continue the upward trend!

2015: Ronaldo, Messi, Guardiola

Reading Delaney's comments it looks like the RB situation will be accessed in the summer, as will the forwards, but he does seem hellbent on Strootman so that may happen.

On the CB front I can't help wondering if Varane's people are floating the idea he wants out to try and force more playing time, so Schar would be the way to go and should be cheap. We'll probably have to wait until the summer for Hummels.

Knew I'd forgotten someone. I'm only just getting used to Mata in red.

Our current squad is yet to settle down. This is mainly due to injuries, but still, if the news players settle in well, we will not need any more players for this season.
If we get in more players right now, it will be hard to allow everyone to settle in. Our real title challenge will be next year, I want the manager to test and evaluate the current squad first and enhance in into a world class balanced squad for next year after that evaluation.
Things for us to figure out:
1) Can herrera be a starter next to carrick(this season) or new cm(next season)?
2) Can we rely on Shaw?
3) What can Rafael do for us?
4) Blind is great for a limited role, but can he be a complete midfielder in the starting line up?
5) Is Rojo any good?
6) Can Januzaj be the 1st back up or second back up wide forward for us?
7) based on 1 & 4, will we keep carrick or fellaini next year? (assuming we buy a world class CM in the summer).
8) Falcao or RvP?

We should buy players after all these questions have been answered. Damn, make me the god damn Director of Football.

I reckon 4 has already been answered and is a yes tbh

Schar does fit in Van Gaals philosophy of multi functional players. He's very adept with the ball. The Swiss certainly know how to defend as well, I'd imagine he's still second choice to Hummels, though. Great Pen taker as well!

Schar could make a real difference to the team at a low cost, and is also the right age.

Not so desperate for a midfielder now - Blind will be back soon, and we have Carrick, Herrera and Fellaini. Not bad. We are well covered at keeper, left back, striker and left wing.

Right-back is still a bit of a worry. I wonder if Dani Alves could be snapped up? Not keen to spend tons of money.

A young talent for the right wing might be an interesting punt if one is available.

At the moment yes, he's also nearly 10 years older than Blind. One will improve further the other will decline, but I have been very impressed with Blind so far.

Absolutely agree. Blind has looked very good so far.

Isnt Schar a bit suspect defensively? I remember Senderos being selected ahead of him for Switzerland in the World Cup. Good going forward on set pieces though I think.

Nah hes actually very good defensively, he wasn't an established starter at national level at the world cup though, hes still young and had a very quick rise in the game over the last 2 years, was playing for FC Will only 2 years ago.

EDIT: I've seen quite a bit of him in the UCL this season and he looks like a solid player to me.

Cheers. Sounds good. He did look decent the few games I've seen him to be honest

Absolutely agree, I think Blind is being underated, watch some calm come back to our midfield and back 4 when he returns
Is that so?
I am not sure of that. From what I have seen till now, Blind does not have the passing range to play the alonso/carrick role for us. The only way I can see him in the starting line-up is when he will be partnered with a deep lying passing midfielder, in that scenario, Blind will have to be the runner, the presser and the box to box player, he does not have the physical attributes for that. Hence, I can only see him as a jack of all trades, 1st back-up CM.
This is why I want to see Herrera settle in a typical CM position, so that we need to be buy only one CM in the league of Pogba or Strootman.
This will allow us to play a formation like the following:
----herrera----CM-------
---------rooney---------
-nani-------------di maria-
-------falcao/RvP

this is a very potent and balanced team.

Like the calmness he brought to the Leicester game? As opposed to the calmness of our 9 game unbeaten run that has coincided with Carrick's return?

Great setup, I would replace Nani with someone like Cuadrado (well the Cuadrado of 2013/2014 anyways)

It was one game... tbh though there hasn't been THAT much calmness in our 9 game unbeaten run. Southampton, Arsenal etc were definately not calm. With the current set of players we have we need them both in the lineup IMO.

I'd rather have Blind as the extra man I'm midfield with two "defensive midfielder" than have an extra defender with 3 at the back. It would at least allow us to play a back four without our strongest defenders.

Any - Four - Fit - Defenders
Carrick
Blind - Di Maria
Mata
Van Persie - Rooney
At the moment, and it's something everyone seems to miss, we play an extra man in defence because we don't have a midfield that can protect them. I'd rather have an extra man in midfield who can protect the back four as at least we dominate possession and territory.

Still missing a few top players to get back to the PL title. Can’t see how we can match City and Chelsea still being so unbalanced. Need 4/5 top player to come to improve. Hope we’ll sign somebody for the long term this window, in order to prepare next season.

RB : Coleman, Alves, Clyne

CB : Hummels, Varane, Godin, Marquinhos

CM : Strootman, Vidal, Gundogan, Modric (why not if Madrid goes for Pogba)

Wing : Reus, Bale,

(My second team is better than Arsenal first team hahaha)
