Manchester United - January transfer window 2015 (twitter blacklist applies)

Reus was mentioned speculatively in the Times article.

"United could also join the race for Marco Reus, the Germany attacking midfielder and Hummels’ Dortmund team-mate, whose €25 million (£19.8 million) release clause kicks in next year. Dortmund’s shock position at the bottom of the Bundesliga may increase United’s prospects of prising Hummels and/or Reus away from the German club."

feck, I thought it was a £30 million clause, £19.8 million is just crazy! We should do everything to try buy him and in the unlikely event it didn't work out we could make an easy £20 million profit next year

there's a clearly a group of targetted players. if they become available in January, we will sign them, but if they are not availanle, we will wait until the summer. Woodward has already said as much.

Godin and/or Hummels. Clyne over Alves for me, easily. Strootman. and another attacking threat (Reus/Robben ideally). another striker if we don't take up Falcao (who i hope proves himself in the second half of the season).

What's United's purpose in releasing this information to the world? Is it to scare our rivals?

The Clyne one is interesting given we play Saints on Monday.

I often think it's part of Woodward's ego.

Surely we will pay more for these players if clubs know how much we have available.

No offence to LVG but i'd have loved to have seen Fergie with a few years of this money.

Do you think we can really risk Reus? He's world class, but he's always injured and the one he's had again this season is horrible. Look at RVP its clear the injuries have come back to hit him in some way.

For a £19.8m investment I think its a risk we should take, Ashley Young cost £18 million after all.

Maybe, but when Reus is injured its always the same kind of area around his foot and always for the long term.

The little run of bad luck Reus has had in the last 6 months has created a myth about him. In his three seasons for Gladbach he played 35, 37 and 35. In the last two seasons for Dortmund he played 47 and 43. He turned his ankle prior to the World Cup and maybe came back to soon after Dortmunds poor start and aggravated it in an International friendly. The recent injury was down to a dreadful tackle, not any fragility on his part.

Oh, you'd settle for him? That's good of you.

Who? I only can think of Cavani that fits that description.

Yeah.

Barney to be fair that was in response to a number of players arriving in the summer.

Im not in the camp of opinion that we need to sign an entire XI.

Give me a top notch RB (Coleman), a good winger (Reus) and maybe another striker if we dont sign Falcao (get Benzema when Aguero moves to Madrid ;) ) and we are set.

For all the talk of CBs, unless we see at least two of the current crop leave (Evans + one of Blackett/McNair I guess) then we are overstocked. If that does happen however, we need to buy experience, consistency and leadership. None of this "24 year old pretty good and can hopefully make the step up" nonsense - we have enough of those at CB already.

I can't see any advantage for United in talking big about transfer spending . If Woodward just wants an ego boost then it's to Uniteds disadvantage.

I can't see any top talent making a move any time soon

Dortmund might want to cash in on Reus given his contract situation and perhaps a desire to prevent him going to Bayern but I think its more likely they will hang onto him in the hope of retaining CL qualification - its worth at least 20 million to them

I don't see us doing any major business expect perhaps bringing in a backup right back or a young prospect

a long term injury or two could change all that but I'm optimistic that our patience with Falcao will pay off and players like Evans, Jones, Carrick, Rafael, Smalling might get some luck

More chance of the pope doing a porno.

If we do have that type of money to spend I'd now prefer if we just started buying one or two blue chip players (£40m mark) who'd come in and cement a starting place in the 11 like a Di Maria rather than 4-5 (£20-25m mark) and if scouted and price ok maybe 1 young player with great potential (what we did with Ronaldo, Nani and Anderson).

If we somehow get into this title race by the start of January, then this window could be a fun one for us muppets.

If Woody thinks we can genuinely push for the title with a little strengthening then I'm sure he will start flashing the cash to make it happen.

The only way I can see any major activity is if we clear the decks with transfers out and loans.

Unless we're talking ridiculous levels of flashing the cash (which we won't be), then it'll come down to IF any targets are available rather than how much they'll cost.

I'm more thinking in terms of paying the extra £5/£10m for players we had lined up for the summer. Strootman being a likely candidate for example.

think van Gaal was hinting we would get players...except he does not want to talk about it.

agree if we do well this month, we will strengthen so we can go for the title.

Not sure if it's been posted or not yet.

I'd take Schar, Khedira and Lichesteiner.

Can we just take some players from Juve out of spite?

What are peoples thoughts on Jackson Martinez as a ST?

We are crying out for a FAST, strong clinical striker. If we spunk 40+ mill on Falcao with his injury record and his age it'll be such a waste.

Stingy old bugger would still probably have bought Ashley Young instead of Eden Hazard.

Martinez is not fast, at least i don't remember him being particularly fast and he is 28.

Would love to see Bale here!
There are a few rumours knocking about that Real are punting him around Europe at the moment. He'd be a fantastic signing for us. And possibly one that we'd be more capable of doing with FFP knocking about.

We could do with a right back with Rafael being constantly injured. Coleman would do a job.

Varela could of done a job if we had kept him rather then sending him out on loan, the kid looked quality and would of made a good alternative to Rafael.

Why is Michael Carrick still on this list?

I'd take Schar, Khedira and possibly that young Ukrainian winger whose name without looking at I won't attempt to spell.

I cant see us keeping Falcao now I'm sorry to say. He would have to do something really special in the latter half of the season. I think we potentially need 2 strikers. Van Persie is not setting the World alight and arguably I would say the order at present based on form would be Rooney, Wilson, Van Persie, Falcao. When you look at Aguero or Suarez last season season or Ronnie at Real these are the heights we should be aiming for with our strike force. I think we need 2 truly World class options and 2 that give us something different. We are clearly lacking pace and dynamism.

Would rather see how Benteke develops. I think he's capable of playing in a top team in the near future.

Well chica could be one of the 'different' options if he returns to us from real and is happy to be a bench player still.

There isn't really many world class strikers available though unless we spend mega money. Martinez could be a good striker his goal scoring record is fantastic, Cavani is another one. Reus can play striker but he is manly a winger. Benzema has a weird relationship with Madrid and the fans but he's quality.

Nowadays there seems to be 4 or 5 world class strikers the rest are not even close in terms of performances.

Not sure about a top team, maybe spurs or Everton level.
I think he's capable of better than that. You can't argue with his record, and it's been good for more than that first season. Bearing in mind the injuries he's suffered. He probably wont get that chance at a top club, but I think he'd surprise a lot of people if he did.

I definitely don't see someone like Llorente as better, and that's Juventus.
And I couldn't imagine him not at least matching his Villa record at somewhere like Arsenal either.

I think he's outgrowing Aston Villa. It'll hold him back staying there for much longer.
