Manchester United - January Ins and Outs

The question is: if someone like Schneiderlin leaves, what kind of midfielder will he bring? A true option to Carrick, someone to really replace him on the medium run, or just some squad player to make the numbers? Mourinho's careful not to rock the boat too much when things are going smooth, so sometimes he brings players just to be subs. Not a good policy, if you ask me.

Well I think if it was just Schneiderlin than maybay he'll feel the squad is fine with the midfielders we currently have

He seems to use Fellaini and Mata as most used subs for the midfield 3 and if push comes to shove he can use Schweinsteiger aswell. But if Schneiderlin and Schweinsteiger would leave I think Mourinho would feel he needs to bring in another midfielder and as you say that might just be someone he'll use as a sub.

Is fabinho still a possibility? He'd certainly be a good addition for the holding midfield spot.

We are a Carrick, Herrera or Pogba injury away from having trouble in the midfield. We obviously need someone to backup both Pogba and Herrera as box to box types and a future Carrick replacement, so hopefully we can sign on in January and the other in the summer.

At the moment, I'd say CM is the bigger need than DM because Blind is a decent DM and Mourinho prefers Fellaini there, though he doesn't seem interested in using Blind there. Whereas, if Pogba or Herrera missed a month, I have no idea who would come in. Rooney? Fellaini? Ugh.

We'd arguably be best off switching formations at that point and playing 4-2-3-1 since we could at least then play Martial-Mata-Mkhitaryan behind Ibra (with Rashford available) and probably be worse defensively but better going forward, and it's crazy to think one injury to one of 2 players who play similar enough roles that they can easily be covered by one guy would necessitate a change in formation.

Even a Lampard to Man City style loan might help us in that regard. Like the best CM in MLS, or someone not getting playing time at a big club in Spain, Germany or Italy but who can still play. It's predatory, but a team that is mid-table and clearly not going down or making Europe, like say Espanyol, could send us their best CM for a loan fee of like 3 to 4M for January to the summer, and a promise we'll send Pereira or Januzaj there next year and we might both win.

Obviously one of Pereira (can he be recalled?) or Fosu-Mensah could step up, but Mourinho seems unlikely to love that as an option.

I see Everton and Arsenal being linked with Smalling. Seems rather unlikely unless Lindeloff is Lindelon. Swap Sanchez for Smalling?

Are the press just linking everyone out of favour with us to Everton?

A club that never ever pay the gong rate for players, especially not ours!

Seeing they got Cleverley and Gibson off us, can you blame them for not wanting to pay too much. They do keep coming back for more though. A bit masochistic.

We are being linked to Lass Diarra. He'd be a great squad option imo.

Just been reading that he's got a €10m fine to pay to Lokomotiv Moscow. China it is then.

I wonder if Schneiderlin would go the same way as those two. Namely us realising he was never the standard required.

I still vividly remember the Cleverley hype, that him playing was some sort of key to us playing well.
Inextricably linked to that mad 4 or 5 games with Ando.

Does anybody think we will sign anyone this window?

I like the idea of Jose getting a Matic type signing. Where he gave him 6 months to bed in, then he was brilliant the next season. But I don't actually foresee any signings

I think Jose will be cautious as he's got the squad spirit spot on right now. He wont add to the attack and I'm not sure he can get the CM's we need, but I still think a CB and FB are possible.

The need for depth behind Pogba and Herrera is so great and so easily fixable by one player that I could see us signing a CM with offensive skill, like Banega, Parejo or Sigurdsson, or a younger player Mourinho likes.

Doing so would make the Carrick can't play every game at DM problem basically go away until this summer, since we could just play Herrera at DM against teams who sit deep against us and Fellaini (ugh. But Mourinho seems fine with him there) or hopefully Blind (with Shaw at LB) as more defensively strong options.

I think he'd be brought as the starter at DM. I didn't see him, but apparently he was brilliant last year and had won the France DM job over Schneiderlin, Kante and Cabaye for the Euros before his injury.

Imagine 18 months ago that someone had told you Carrick and Herrera would be playing as well as they are, that we would sign Bastian Schweinsteiger, Morgan Schneiderlin and Paul Pogba for our midfield and that people would still be making sensible posts like the one above.

For whatever reason, the moves of Morgan and Bastian here have been hugely disappointing. As someone who really thought both would be successful here, and who advocated for signing them beforehand (in Schweinsteigers case for many years), it's taught me how little I know about who we should or shouldn't be targeting for transfers.

The Sun reports that we've offered Roma £32.5m for Kostas Manolas and, in a separate story, that we're offering Griezmann £220k per week to sign in the summer.

Manolas is great, thought he'd be excellent for Arsenal and surprised they passed on him.

Whichever clown is in charge of the Mirrors twitter headlines wants shooting or firing. Preferably shooting.

I think Fonte is a go. He won't give in a transfer request in January without a firm interest.

What for? For 4 weeks while Bailly is away?

Jones Rojo Smalling Blind Bailly is more than enough.

Like too see another CM come in, Fellaini, Carrick Herrera and Pogba is not enough for my liking

Been thinking about this as well. Although The Schmidfield has barely played this season, we have to remember that we haven’t had any injuries in midfield. Competing in four competitions, it’s pushing our luck a bit. Then again if Basti is fit and doesn’t leave in January (as it seems)...

And then that cnut from Bolton injured him and he was never the same afterwards and what might have been a really good midfield combination was lost.

I really do think Schneidelin is a much better player than those two. I'm sad it hasn't worked out for him tbh.

In:
Lindelöf will be the only one I reckon.

Out:
Schneiderlin.

I cant believe that Mourinho won't pick up a central midfielder, unless he brings Schweinsteiger back into the team, which seems unlikely. Leaving us with 4 midfielders to cover 3 slots seems incredibly risky, especially when one of them is 35 and another is a massive step down in quality.

What's the point in paying another ordinary midfielder £90k/week unless he gets a match? In think Carrick, Herrera, Pogba, Schweinsteiger, Fellaini, Fosu-Mensah, and Blind are OK for a 4-3-3. A Carrick replacement would be good. The closest we have is Sean Goss. There aren't a lot of players around like that. We're paying Schweinsteiger, he may as well be in all squads.

Schweini seems to be frozen out and I don't think Blind or TFM are seen as midfielders by Mourinho.

Schweini seems to be frozen out.
As in: he is only in the PL squad. But if Schneiderlin is sold, Schweini could be back in all squads for the later half of the season.

TFM is a defensive midfielder. He may not have Carrick's passing range but he's faster, more aggressive and tackles.

I don't think Mo thinks in terms of "freezing players out". I think he likes a small squad, and other people interpret that as freezing players out. Even with the small squad he's had Goss and Tuanzebe training often with them. I'm happy provided Mo buys the players he needs. United don't need to buy another midfielder just for the sake of it. Buy: ONLY if a top midfielder is available.

Well, whatever you want to call it, Schweinsteiger hasn't been part of his plans so far this season. If he brings him back into the first team mix that helps significantly. But given that he hasn't even been on the bench in ages, its not unreasonable to assume Mourinho isn't planning to use him. I suppose we'll see in the next few days, since if he's ever getting a run it'll start in these cup games.

As for Fosu-Mensah - bit of a stretch to call him a central midfielder right now. He mixed it up there as a youth player, and may develop there still, but I don't recall any of his senior appearances being in central midfield were they?

After that press conference it suddenly seems a whole lot more likely that we will see Schweini again this month.

What do people think about this transfer window? Do we need anyone?

I used to like when Sir Alex looked over it the majority of the time, and just let the squad he had continue to gel. Feet up, letting teams panic spend £35m on Andy Carroll. (I prefer to ignore they signed Suarez in that same January)

For me though, this feels like one of the Januarys we need to do some business. Like January 2006.

Opinions?

I think if we could get an extra CB or box to box CM in this window it would be valuable, the attack and fullback positions will probably be best left for the summer, same with the Carrick replacement.

So how about this Young to China stuff? He totally turned my opinion around under LvG, did a really professional job while others fell apart. He's barely been involved so I certainly wouldn't begrudge him a move.

With a name like that, he might be better off going to Korea.

Obviously not a priority but what are peoples views on Hernandez? Would you have him back here? I would.

Absolutely. One of my Top 5 favourite United players ever. And I think Mourinho is a big fan aswell.
