Manchester City under Pep Guardiola | Pep on City v Liverpool ref: "He likes to be special"

Wasn't LVG criticised for stuff like this, making the players seem like they were kids and he was the headmaster?

Hopefully the squad react better for Pep's sake.
You can see why he's of the opinion he can't spend more than 3/4 years at one club.
It's inevitable that after some time, the squad get sick of it.

For having players weighed daily and having them eat together after a match? Pep might be too intense for players after a few years but this stuff sounds like pretty standard stuff that every club should be following. van Gaal also had the issue of seemingly having a cold and distant personality which is completely different to Pep.

Modern day players are spoilt. I don't know how the City players are but here under LVG, we constantly herd how the players hated being micromanaged.
Could be a problem specific to the British players since these things are pretty standard on the continent.
City don't have many British players and the ones they have are young so unlikely to cause any trouble.

I think Pep and LVG are very different at their respective clubs. The players here know that there is nothing beyond Pep for us in the short-term, he isn't going to be sacked and replaced by a better manager. So they have no choice but to buy into his ideas or walk away and be replaced. Pep has the complete backing from the board, the fans, and every single aspect of the club. It also helps that he comes with a reputation as a top manager.

With LVG you always felt the next step was Mourinho, it just happened quicker than expected. I don't disregard his previous honours, but he didn't quite come with the reputation of Pep or Mourinho either. Nobody thought you were getting one of the best in the world when Van Gaal showed up.

Just reads to me like the papers trying to squeeze a story out of this narrative of Guardiola exceptionalism. He's stopped Pellegrini's habit of having the players stay in a hotel the night before a home game, so there's more leniency and privacy afforded there. Players having their weight taken is surely common practice, while eating together after a game might be a bit annoying but he introduced it at Bayern without fuss it seemed. Any players who become frustrated are the kind of players I wouldn't want at the club anyway.

What does this have to do with City's performances tactics and results under Pep Guardiola?

Nothing.

But then the thread title is not "Manchester City's Performances Tactics & Results Under Pep Guardiola"

The lack of support for a team with a high profile manager change, designs on winning titles, and handing out what looks like a farewell game to a club legend is a topic worthy of debate.

Is what Pep doing really taboo? (in terms of diet and fitness)

I would think that was a given for a top class athlete. Also, I am sure they can eat whatever when they are off training grounds....

The fans reaction to Pep signing has been abit meh.
The fans haven't been turning up en mass and he atmosphere has been shit for a long time.
Considering this is their most successful period ever, it's disappointing. I used to think the club was sleepwalking while waiting for Pep to come. And Pelligrini isn't the most inspiring manager.
The atmosphere against Sunderland was disgraceful imo.
You wait for a manager for three years. He finally arrives and that's the atmosphere he gets? Pathetic.

Our lot didn't seem to take it well under LVG.
Remember the almost weekly leaks in the press, under Moyes that, the players wanted their chips back.

It's madness but he actually looks a much better player there. Although I disagree he's 'as good as they come'. He's decent on the ball, great in the air, and as strong as anybody. It's his lack of pace that is his downfall as a fullback, and when we play teams with quick forwards or good movement it'll be his downfall at CB too. Great option to have there that nobody saw coming mind you.

Probably says more about the players than the manager to be fair.

What's so bad about this? These are pretty common practises in Germany. These lads earn a hundred fold more than any olympic athlete, so a bit of professionalism can be expected.
Over here, Tuchel for example is said to lead an even tighter regime. Might be one of the factors(as in not monitoring players more closely), why british football has fallen behind in Europe over the past years...

Only for United fans it would seem.

Not really, the City fans camouflaged as blue seats is a fairly frequent thing mentioned by fans of other clubs as well. Things like the august vacations, church at sunday, our fans being more affluent and traffic jams are fairly niche and mostly mentioned by United fans, but I hear the thing about Ethiad being empty being mentioned fairly often by other sets of fans as well.

Really? I've only ever heard it from United fans. Is this on other forums or in your home country?

I don't understand why you guys expect full stadiums are so few years to be honest? Surely its common sense to realise the work being done now is for long term. Are adults likely to change their team to City now we're more successful? No, no they are not, well bar a few glory hunters who jump on the bandwagon of whoever.. be it United, Arsenal, Chelsea etc...

Where are City likely to be winning fans? With kids. Success on the pitch now and if its sustained will be influencing young kids to come follow City and surely thats how a fan base grows. I see tons of City shirts on young kids in this small town in Ireland, Chelsea shirts too, while United still dominate, there is alot more City shirts at the average u10-u14 soccer clubs than before. The same in schools and the same on the streets, when I was a kid there was one (mine). The number of Everton and Villa fans has dwindled among Irish kids though, understandable considering their success in the 80's and not now.

So while you see a bucket load of Everton/Villa and even Forest supporters in there 40's here though dwarfed by United, Liverpool and Arsenal etc.. they outnumber City. The opposite is true of kids where City outnumber those clubs. Those are the new fanbase that the club will either stick around or move on depending on what we achieve is the coming years. We can't suddenly expect all adults who have their clubs since youth to turn to City. But where most clubs do earn their fanbase is the fans who are kids when they are successful. City might not reap the benifit of their current on field success unless its maintained for year but we have to wait for those kids who are turing to City to grow up.

I find it funny when people expect us to fill stadiums every week, all things considered how do you think the 70k (reported) that turn up at Old Trafford became United fans? How does one think United became the biggest English club in the world and up there with Barca and Real?

Home country, I hear it around the pub bandied around by Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham fans. Also they've made a point out of it in the studio broadcasts where they cover the PL on Norwegian TV quite often, and I don't even think that the presenters are rag cnuts. Most presenters in Norway are Liverpool fans, seems to be a general theme when it come to presenters.

Kind of ironic when we get around 15k more fans than Liverpool every week in the league but hey. In the UK I literally only here it from a United fans and it's mostly in jest.

This forum is very serious about it mind!

How do you rank in attendance vs capacity as compared to Liverpool though? (genuine question, I don't know).

No idea, I would say we must be around 95% full. Liverpool will surely be higher as their stadium holds less and they are a much bigger club.

Again this is an obsession I find on this forum, I've never sat in a pub in the UK and had a conversation with rival fans about attendance vs capacity ratios. Haha

This is a good website for stats though.

Kind of an unfair comparison though, Liverpool have been a top club for years and despite their struggles have a really, really big global fanbase established all over the world. I'd imagine Liverpool have a massive attendance vs capacity ratio, on a par with Uniteds.

So you average 60 thousand for every home match? That's if you are referring to last season when we had 45 thousand, this season it will be 54.Not that I would dare suggest you have just made up a figure..

I reckon they reserve 20-25k tickets for friends & entourage of the Sheik

Looking at your link you averaged 10k more, so not so far out!

Must agree with this.
With a bigger stadium and a modicum of success I can imagine Liverpool drawing 60k per week.

I didn't know Liverpool held 45k mate and yes the 15k was an off the cuff figure because I'm not obsessed with attendances. It wasn't a dig at Liverpool, just responding to Swansons Norwegian references. The point being it's strange for Norwegian Liverpool fans to talk about city's match day attendances which, specific numbers aside, are lower than city's.

Not like it is a recurring point of discussion, more of a friendly pisstake between rival fans in the pub, with the classic "stereotypes" like:

United fans being gloryhunters and ignorant
Liverpool living in the past and being delusional
Arse being hipsters and celebrating the 4th place trophy
Chelsea being plastics
City having no fans and being a construct

Just some friendly bante down at the pub, we're not locals (duh) so it is not like we feel any real animosity towards each other, we pretty much just mirror the pisstakes and banter from the UK.

Like I've described in previous posts English football culture has been a part of Norwegian society since pre WW2, so we very much feel like it our own so to say. You'll easily find 3+ generations of fans of a certain club in each family over here. That's probably why we've adopted the pisstakes and banter.

I can't wait for the derby on Sep 10!!! I want to see Mourinho's tactics hurt Pep's team big time ;). Well, that's a hope of course, in reality, we won't know how the game goes until it happens.

To be fair, the empty seats thing is funny (even if just to listen to the far-fetched excuses). And clearly rankled the match-going City fans enough that they put up that 'we're not really here' banner ahead of a big game when of course they were there. But then backfired spectacularly when photographed beside a shitload of empty seats next game.

To be fair they are now top club but with a mid tier club fan base . Nothing wrong with that, but considering it was Pep's first home CL game, barely 17,000 is shocking.
