Manchester City banned from CL for 2 seasons and fined 30 million euros | CAS - Ban lifted, fined 10 million

I must say I'm still surprised to see the UEFA actually do something
Two years is quite a long time for elite players (and an elite coach, at that) to be away from that competition, I wonder whether City will lose a few people.
Oh for sure can see Pep go to Juve (especially to manage Ronaldo while hes still there for a season). De Bruyne, Aguero, David Silva already probably leaving.. rest will probably stay. Those are the 3 I can see leaving.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport, it's an independant body established to settle disputes related to sport through arbitration. So far, they've ruled in favor of UEFA in some cases, against in others and we don't have any element showing they are biased in any way.
Interesting. I would guess they mainly deal with contractal issues. Is there a precedent for this type of case? (I haven't really read through the thread so you can link a post if it's already covered)

Their pasties in the British press will be in uproar in the upcoming days.
The press articles I've read went overboard in stressing how really furious City are...'cos, y'know, making a show of anger means that you're innocent.

This will make or break FFP

If CAS rules in city's favour, the FFP rule is dead

and here it is

Simply put, this is a case initiated by UEFA, prosecuted by UEFA and judged by UEFA. With this prejudicial process now over, the Club will pursue an impartial judgment as quickly as possible and will therefore, in the first instance, commence proceedings with the Court of Arbitration for Sport at the earliest opportunity.

City could easily force UEFA to overturn this through CAS, like Milan did in 2018, because UEFA doesn't have the right to exclude clubs on these grounds. The club decided to accept UEFA's "punishment" the following year because it only meant a one year exclusion from Europa League - a competiton which they didn't even want to participate in - and then a clean slate afterwards.
What a shame, I would love to see some competition penalty against city. I hope the CAS sides with the UEFA.

Now the FA, PL & EFL should strip MCFC of all trophies won during the offending period. And the football broadcasters - if they have any backbone, which I doubt - should sue for big compensation for being sold rights to competitions undermined by cheating

That’s encouraging. Did AC appeal and get any kind of reduction?

Yes and no. They got banned 2 years ago, appealed it to Cas and it got overturned. Then got banned the year after and didn’t appeal. Cas deemed the punishment to be excessive in the first case. You’d imagine before UEFA gave the punishment the year after and then to City now, that they are confident the punishment is not excessive this time.

Wow, Pep definitely gone then. Ole must be a lucky man. His job will probably be saved because of this.

However, Manchester City should find it easier to walk the league. But, will their star players be satisfied by lack of champions league football? Who will want to come there now?

I believe Uefa should have imposed a transfer ban or very heavy fine. If they tackled racism as hardas they tackled this issue, there wouldn’t be that much in football.

Milan failed to break even. City cooked the books and the amount that they cooked was huge. It's not the same case.

We need to wait for CAS to rule on this but this is absolutely hilarious.

If it gets upheld Pep is off, he only cares about his own image and won't let this damage it.

That's if he gets 5th. I wouldn't count on it.

Then watch the mental gymnastics as our fans try to justify it.

Let's hope so... it needs to be treated as a penal case, with penal implication. If that's the case, even city won't be able to avoid sanctions, including sports sanctions.

How will this affect ole?

Not too bad they got something fairly significant but this ban and 70m total in fines so far feels a bit light in comparison to the last 10 years shady goings on affecting results for the last decade, particularly here where not a dickie bird is said or done.

What on earth makes you think we're guaranteed 5th. Even if they let 5th in?

How will this affect ole?
What do you mean? No idea. I suppose 5th qualifies for the CL if that's enforced, but Ole should try to be 4th at least, and catch up on Chelsea. We can still do it.

Surely this means they can focus on winning it back from them for the next year or two, Pep or not

No - they're in a dire need of rebuild, and to replace David Silva, Aguerro, Fernanndiho in addition to getting a LB/CB. Which quality player would forego 2 years of CL to join City? They're fecked, Liverpool have a clear path to more PL trophies simple as. Unless Ed gets his fist out of his own ar$e.

One look at the table should tell you noone will be walking the league over Liverpool.

Nothing is guaranteed but I don't see why people dismiss our team and Ole that much... just let the lads work and get it done. It's just football.

The punishment is insufficient. It should be a 5 year ban and a fine of 4 times as much.

City fans thinking UEFA have a vendetta against them is one of the weirdest things in football currently. Mental.

Man city's domestic success should forever be tainted as they did it through illegal means and literally bought their success

I definitely see the two year ban as UEFA expecting it to be reduced on appeal. So go for double the punishment, and then end up with the punishment you wanted to give them. :D I'm sure UEFA are more interested in the money than the ban.

City's comments suggest they are planning to fight this in every court they can. So there's every chance they'll get to play in next season's Champions League while the courts settle the issue.

How does this affect us? What do we get for 8th place?

If they had not of been banned from Europe but fined £60m.. they would have felt they got away with it. Money is endless for them.

Hopefully the ban will be upheld

They'll appeal and probably end up banned for a season at most.
Also, this is for financial doping over 2 seasons only? Surely it's been going on for more than that?

Yes, it's actually pretty common. For exemple, Milan was sanctionned by the UEFA last year, they went before the CAS, the CAS said the principle of a sanction was fine but that it was excessive and asked UEFA to give a better motivation or to reduce the sanction. In the meantime, Milan negociated a deal with the UEFA for a 1 year ban and the deal was validated by the CAS.
