Manager draft

For a period in the 1970s nobody could touch Allan Simonsen and Borussia Moenchengladbach. The brilliant pint-sized Dane, with more tricks than a circus, won three consecutive titles and two UEFA Cups in Die Fohlen's most successful decade and was crowned European Footballer of the Year in 1977. Simonsen scored a cracking equaliser against Liverpool in the European Cup final of the same year but still finished on the losing side. He holds the unique record of being the only player to score in the final of every European competition (UEFA Cup, Cup Winners' Cup & European Cup). Moenchengladbach fans went into mourning when he departed for Barcelona in 1979 and their fortunes have never been the same again. Allan Simonsen is one of the best Danish forwarders of all-time. He was a technically gifted, quick forward, and quite durable. He is the only Danish player in history to win the Ballon d’Or award. The race for the award was tight, and Simonsen squeezed past English midfielder Kevin Keegan by three points and French midfielder Michel Platini by four points to win the prestigious prize.

My pick should be Ronaldao by the way, not Leonardo who I can't even pick  That's what happens when you don't sleep.

 been thinking about it all day. Drawing up different formations, trying to make a decision. In the end, I couldn't help myself.

Well, it was feckin stupid of me to leave Simonsen so late with the paucity of options in the forward pool for Lattek. Was just hoping that you already had completed your forward line with Rummenigge, Muller, Maradona and midfield with Lerby, Roth, Stielike and that you would go about completing your defense. Well, tbf you did the right thing and picked the only contested pick between us. Knew I was taking a risk by leaving him so late but couldn't afford to lose Maier :(

I had Maier pencilled in for my 9th pick before you took him, so you definitely took him at the right time. With the exception of Breitner, you have pretty much the defence I wanted going into this, so once I realized I'd have to piece one together, I made the decision to try and get enough firepower to win games 6-5 and not 1-0 :) Simonsen gives me a bit of flexibility for formations in case I need to mix it up.

RE: the bolded part...you make me sound so greedy

Told you you had dropped a bollock. You can't try deploy a Capello 3-5-2 and leave the wingbacks so late, let alone Panucci who can play wide or as RCB.

Has there ever been another manager who consistently took a player everywhere he went? Milan, Real, Roma, wherever Capello was Panucci moved there soon after.

Yeah, I know, Harry Redknapp probably has 100 players he did that with at a dozen clubs, but none of them of the stature of Real, Milan, or even Roma.

Unless, of course, I rumbled your plans:

Yeah, I'm resigned to going out tbh.

 Didn't mean to sound like that.

You shouldn't worry about your defense tbh. A back four of Breitner, ******, Augenthaler, Hansen is not one to be nervous about. There are still a couple of picks for that CB position who would do great tbh. The back four with the exception of Breitner might not be big-names but were excellent defenders and you have a trio of fantastic midfielders who can all do a mighty fine job at shielding defences and winning midfield battles. So don't worry about the defense and you already have a fantastic attack who have plenty of goals in them as well. Agreed on Simonsen giving you more options and a different dimension to Maradona so it is a good pick.

Then Liverpool bought him and almost every Liverpool fan fell in love with him. It was Everton we played and Gerrard got sent off. Xabi's performance in that game was one of the best I had seen from a central midfielder. He was simply sensational. Watch this pass to Luis Garcia. On thr turn, with his weaker foot.

His form dropped a bit in the next one odd year but that was due to injuries and stuffs. That 2008-09 season, Liverpool challenged for the league title, Xabi was Liverpool's best and most important player. We played games without both Gerrard and Torres, yet we won because Xabi was stamping his authority on games regularly.Every manager he has worked with love him to core. He is basically the manager on the pitch. Be it for Rafa at Liverpool, Mourinho at Madrid or now Pep at Bayern. Even though Rafa and he had a fall-out, and that was down to some personal issues, Rafa always knew how special Xabi was.

This. He was one of my favourite players and I thought he had a lot better to offer than Carrick does for us. He last season with Liverpool (the season where Fat Rafa wanted to replace him with Gareth f****** Barry) underlined his importance to the team and that was the start of Scousers decline from being a Top 4 team. One from which, they still have not recovered fully, imo.

I had him here in my first draft, but he did not get much joy at all. He was not considered a good enough DM and his passing was rated somewhere along hofing iirc. Compared to Busquets and Carrick, I still rate him above.

Nestor "Tito" Gonçalves

In 1957, four years before Juan Joya joined Peñarol´s ranks, another club legend started his career. Gonçalves played 574 matches for the "Aurinegros" and never left the club until he retired in 1970. He was an exceptional defensive midfielder who was brilliant in breaking up the play and shielding the defence with a passing range rarely found in Southamerican anchor men. In total he won 9 league titles, 3 copa libertadores and 2 intercontinental Cups, which makes him the most successful footballer in the history of the uruguayan league.

ogkOS.jpg

During the reign of Guttmann he captained Peñarol in one of the most controversial and scandalous finals in the history of the copa libertadores. In 1962 after beating the local rival "Nacional", they faced Santos FC in the final round with the chance to win the competition for a 3rd time in a row.

Santos won the first match 2:1 in Montevideo, so Peñarol had to win the return leg to force a decider. Peñarol was leading 3:2, when the brazilian crowd got disgruntled. At the 52nd minute the referee was knocked out after being hit by a bottle. When Carlos Robles (ref) woke up, he decided to abandon the match, but due to very serious menaces of Santos delegates, fans and politics, he was forced to continue the match after a 50 minute delay. The rest of the match was played "unofficially", as the referee himself communicated to the CSF board in the match report.

During this abnormal period, Santos equalised in the 66th minute, when the linesman was knocked unconscious by a bottle, delaying the match again. When Peñarol got a pen, Robles was forced by Santos players and supporters to rectify his decision. Peñarol players including their captain protested, so the ref tells him "Tito, I think we all want to get out of here alive, don't we?" The chaotic and violent match ended 3:3, but the CSF ruled the match 3:2 in favour of Panerol.

One month later both teams faced each other one more time to decide this exceptional final. In Buenos Aires Guttmann´s team was overwhelmed by the outstanding Pele, who scored twice and assisted another goal. Santos won 3:0 and triumphed in this young competition.

Maybe @antohan can tell us even more brilliant stories about our Uruguayan players, two more will join the team soon.

@Raees

Alonso actually did have two average seasons for Liverpool and Carrick at that time did perform better than him. Playing in a better team was part of that reason ofcourse. Another reason was that Alonso was frequently paired with Gerrard in a MF two, with Gerrard trying to play the roy of rovers all the time leaving Alonso to cover. Adding Mascherano changed that and allowed him to shine again.

Bump, one more hour for @Raees before we skip him. Hope he turns up soon enough, almost near the end of picks now.

Well I don't think mine or Cutch's pick clash with Raees so we can try to make a bit of headway either way.

I am off to sleep now. Don't wait for me to pick. I will pick tomorrow morning once I wake up. Good night, lads.

Yeah I guess you and Cutch can make their picks if you are absolutely certain that it doesn't overlap with Raees. Just need the draft to pick up a bit of pace, that's all.

Interesting to see who Cutch starts as his midfield duo. Having Robson and ****** does give him extra options.

I'm here folks, I was waiting for anto to give me some advice on my pick but he hasn't come on yet. I'll go with..

Michel

Satellite

A luxury passer, he was the king of assists, with extraordinary skill. Good with both feet, he was outstanding with his right. Team-mates like Hugo Sánchez o Iván Zamorano made the most of his measured crosses to increase their goal-scoring statistics. They were so precise that fans would say that Míchel had a ‘glove’ on his right foot. With Butragueño, the player after which the ‘Quinta’ is named, he formed one of the most spectacular ‘partnerships’ in modern football.

At the age of 12 he received offers from Rayo Vallecano and Atlético Madrid. However, he preferred to play for the club that was the love of his life, and thus he joined the Whites. After convincing coaches with his talent, he grew and developed as a footballer with Real Madrid. His debut with the first team occurred in 1982, at the age of 18, against Castellón. Míchel scored in that first game, as the team won away (1-2).

From then on the Whites’ Nº 8 would lead a team that dominated domestically five consecutive seasons. Nineteen years with the club, eleven of which were amongst the football world’s elite. He earned 65 caps with the Spanish national team, scoring 21 goals. He played at the 1988 European Championship, and the World Cups of Mexico (1986) and Italy (1990). In the latter he scored a hat-trick against South Korea.

2 Spanish Cup

3 Spanish Super Cup

He can start all 3 of Robson, Keane and Scholes (06-08) version.

If Fergie had been left unpicked, I had planned on taking him and playing this

----Giggs---Cantona---Ronaldo
-------------Robson-----------
----------Keane--Scholes-----
Evra----Rio-----Stam----Irwin

With Eric in false 9 role. Ronaldo in his 08 avatar

Cutch shouldn't start all three of those as that Cantona/Ruud pairing is fantastic. Cantona was a better second striker than Scholes was anyway, I can't think of any situation really in which you would want Scholes there ahead of Cantona in a United side.

Keane/Robbo or Keane/Scholes depending on opposition.
