Just saw some tweet about how Monaco bought 41 million worth of players and sold them for cca 310 millions profit. So I thought this guy at Monaco could be good for us. Maybe. Not to sell of course! No idea what his name is. To lazy to look for it.

It’s Michael Emenalo as of November last year. He was with Chelsea for 10 years.

Wouldn't it be the guy before him? If he bought and sold 41 players in less than a year I'd be impressed....

I think VDS would be a great shout.

He has done a good job at Ajax and he has past experience working at Old Trafford and would fit in well/

Why would you want that nice guy to be stuck in between Ed who clearly calls the shots and prob will do even after he rushes through this made up position (to take the recent flack of himself)......and Mou, who will forever detest and call out the DoF just as he has Ed....the actual DoF at united...do you follow.....

Wouldn't that be the same Luis Campos in the Ciaran Kelly article we were talking about?

Someone else seems to think that’s a great idea.

Apparently he’s close to Mou.

Had no idea, wasn't reading thread, sorry, but saw that tweet and liked the idea having that guy at United, not for seling player tho.
Here is the tweet

and that is not all, replies:
You forgot Martial, Falcao and James Rodriguez?
Balde diao

not bad, can he find us RW?

Someone like him would be ideal, especially since the fantasy picks like Monchi won't happen.

Why would Monchi not happen? It's not like trying to buy Neimar or Mbappe, where we need to cough up 200M+. The Dof position is just a job in the club, if we offer him more money and a career step up (which Man United is, compared to most other clubs), then it's definitely a realistic option and not just a fantasy. Probably we would need to pay just a few million for the breach of contract fine to bring him in - that's nothing.

Anyway, I did some research for the most successful DoFs and I think we should pick one of them instead of gambling with someone like Neville or VDS. Here is my list, I think any of them would be very good for us, my preference is Luis Campos or Andrea Berta:

Monchi (Roma, previously Sevilla)
Pros: regarded as one of the best; very astute on the transfer market (buying low and selling high); very good at bringing unknown talents
Cons: looks like he is very suited for operation at a selling club like Roma or Sevilla, not clear if he can adapt to United

Andrea Berta (Atletico Madrid, previously Parma, Genoa)
Pros: very astute on the transfer market (buying low and selling high); very good at bringing unknown talents; very good at developing young players from the academy; works very well with defensive/counter attacking couches similar to Mourinho
Cons: can't think of any

Luis Campos (Lille, previously Real Madrid, Monaco)
Pros: regarded as one of the best; very astute on the transfer market (buying low and selling high); works very well with Mourinho
Cons: looks like he is very suited for operation at a selling club like Monaco and Lille (at Real Madrid he wasn't a DoF), not clear if he can adapt to United

Michael Zorc (Borussia Dortmund)
Pros: supports coaches with very attacking philosophy; very good at bringing unknown talents
Cons: only ever played and worked for Borussia Dormund, maybe he would be too loyal to them; looks like he is very suited for operation at a selling club like Borussia Dortmund, not clear if he can adapt to United

Giuseppe Marotta (Juventus, many other italian clubs previously)
Pros: regarded as one of the best; very astute on the transfer market (buying low and selling high); very good at bringing quality coaches
Cons: looks like he only worked in Italy, not clear if he can work abroad

Ralf Rangnick (RB Leipzig, other red bull teams previously)
Pros: supports coaches with very attacking philosophy
Cons: looks like he is very suited for operation at a smaller/selling club like RB Leipzig, not clear if he can adapt to United; very loyal to red bull

The successful candidate will be charged with restructuring United's already sizeable scouting network, building a new philosophy at the club, where players aren't bought at the top of their value.
Looks like we're going to be making younger signings our priority.

Have zero trust in the board that they will hire the best candidate for this club. They rarely see the full picture.

They'll go for who they deem has the best looking CV (just like targeting galatico's). In this case it might actually work

Paul Mitchell sounds very promising IMO. Sounds like he has the right kind of credentials to put a very good system in place.
Yeah seems very good from the sky article.

I didnt say he was the DOF at Ajax. I said he had done a great job there. Always carries himself well and has a lot of professionalism.
Yehhh sign him up! NO! he doesn't have a clue about that role, so why would he be a good choice?

For the people that want and ex-United player, that is Saha's field. He became a agent-consultant for athletes.

Had no idea! Pleased for him. Had he been able to stay fit Saha could've been something really, really special for United.

I remember hearing about Paul Mitchell when he left the saints to rejoin poch at Spurs. He was the one who scouted Dele Ali if I remember correctly.

He was the one that identified Njie & Nkoudou wasn't he? They have proved to be huge huge flops at Spurs.

I think VDS would be a great shout.

Did you know that in january Van der Sar tied his future at Ajax to the success of the newly appointed manager? Saying he'll resign if things don't work out. That's not because things have been going so well at Ajax. If Ajax doesn't win the league this season he's out. He's not that well liked among Ajax supporters in his current role. They haven't won the league in 4 seasons and there was alot of drama last season. First around the departure of Peter Bosz. Then when the new manager and Bergkamp got sacked. And also the whole Nouri situation, which was handled very poorly.

The departure of Ribalta adds weight to the rumour. I wonder on the lead time planned for the DOF?

Does Mourinho want to work somewhere which operates with DOF? Would they wait for his current contract to end? Could they possibly use this to look to move him on.
Based on his recent comments if they are heading down this road you can be sure they won't be asking his opinion on who will take on that role.

I think it could actually add some stability and hopefully each time we change manage we don't replace all of our coaching staff.

Looks like we're going to be making younger cheaper signings our priority.

Corrected this for you.

I personally think the board will pick the correct man. I see why so many are against the board after the transfer window we had However, I think the board was codre6not to sanction stupid prices for the defenders we were after. What I didn't agree with was the way the board went about it. Jose gabe them his targets long time ago and should have acted better.

Back to DoF, if the board don't want Jose for the long term doubt they'll choose Campos I'd rather give Edwin the job as he'd be completely impartial, unlike Campos.

I interpreted players not at the "top of their value" to indicate younger players.

Well I was being slightly facetious, but the two are of course linked.

Needless to say, if there's any truth in this, the club are planning for the post-Mourinho phase - there's no way he's sticking around to manage a team full of Martials, Rashfords and Shaws (which would I suppose tally with the taps being turned off re his transfer targets this summer).

As we all know there are many rumours over last few years of Poch becoming our coach but it looks like it is finally happening if we appoint Paul Mitchell as the director football that has worked with Poch at Southampton and Spurs... I think United probably have a vision for the future.

I would love Van Der Sar in this role, I think he's doing a solid job at Ajax.

The question is, why have we decided to do this now?

To me, it seems like a pretty clear sign of Jose leaving in the near future. He was the last throw of the dice at the traditional "the manager controls everything" method. Now for some reason, they're not so sure about Mourinho, and are putting things in place for the future.

If one was to be cynical about it, you might say that is it better to have everyone speculating about United's potential future DoF, than to have them focusing on the failings of our current de facto DoF this past summer...

"Some of the options for Chelsea to consider are FA technical director Dan Ashworth, who is understood to be interested in a return to club football, former players Juliano Belletti and Michael Ballack, and Monchi – the director of football at Roma....
Ashworth and Monchi have both been mentioned as potential targets for United, along with Edwin van der Sar and former Tottenham Hotspur director of football Paul Mitchell, who is currently working for RB Leipzig."

You nailed it!
IMO, what we are seeing is a news story to take away from the fact that our club are happy being a top 4 side and that winning the title is not on their agenda. If you think about it, this is major news, but virtually nobody is talking about it. Our club have essentially given up on winning the title before the season even started - this is perhaps the first time in decades that this has happened.

Jose needed one last (financial) push to take us from 1st to 2nd and the board said, "NO".

I'd be happy with that.
