If we want someone proven I'd go with one of these:

1. Monchi
2. Giuseppe Marotta
3. Andrea Berta

If we go for a more romantic option:

1. One of the Co92
2. Rio
3. Vidic
4. Patrice Evra

Most fun option:

7. Eric Cantona

May be a marketing guy can explain it more precisely but as per my view flair players at big clubs are more marketable than Workhorses with good engines. Players without good Engines have always struggled under Mourinho and his purchase Made no sense to me over a more mourinho suited player. Fergie used to play these type of players as wingers and one of the prime example of it was Park Ji sung who was a big game player under him, and Mane had a very similar profile to him which was perfect for Mourinho and even for Lvg. I see nothing Other than Woodward's hand in bringing Mkh here back then and he excels in Selling.

You’re doing Mane a massive injustice here. He’s every bit a flair player as Mkhitaryan, he just happens to be better than him. He’s faster, scores more, has a good eye for a pass as well. I would say his dribbling is more effective than Mkhi as well.

I can’t say for certain why we didn’t go for Mane, I had hoped that we would, but I’m fairly sure marketability was not the reason.

Nicky Butt is head of the academy right now I think? Maybe Director of Football could be in his future at some point depending on his performances in his current role.

Funnily, I would really like Vidic, but he just doesn't have the experience and as it's the first time we're venturing into this, I think we need an established person. Though if Vidic were interested, I wouldn't mind him or someone close to the club working alongside whomever we hire.

Wouldn’t mind Van Der Sar having a go. He’s well respected throughout Europe, very intelligent and most important he has the United DNA, he knows what this club is about. He is vastly experienced as a club player and as an international player.

Plus Is he not in a similar role at Ajax currently anyway so he has some experience and wouldn’t be coming into it blind.

Wonder if his family would want to move back here..?

Not sure what sort of skill sets is needed for a director of football role. I’d imagine you need to know footballing styles, managerial styles, and player styles pretty well. I still have no idea about suitable candidates for the role. Cantona or Beckham would be romantic options but I can’t see it.

I can't see Utd going for one of those fancy, foreign types. For the romantic options, what is the DoF's job description again? This person, I thought, was supposed to be our world class manager's boss, but they have no experience.

Scholes has been very opinionated about United the last few years and how he constantly thinks the managers are making mistakes. Maybe he should throw his hat into the ring and offer his expertise.

What’s a job description for a DoF?

My take. Administration and diplomatic skills, collecting data, organize our scouting network, negotiator, financial sense, eye for talents, probably a doos of charisma and charm and finally a bit of authority.

I think that being from the British Islands is a good start. International experience is a must. Good manners, professional attitude, hunger and proven work ethic will help.

Gareth Southgate is someone who maybe can fit the above profile. Comes with a good reputation, perfect age and has a proven track record regarding football knowledge. The day he’s available he could be a candidate.

Isn't it more of an equal position to Jose? Ed would oversee both.

May be he was a more Known figure due to his Dortmund Stint was also a factor for his more Marketing potential and obviously a lesser price. But as you mentioned I think the same about Mane. I was just pointing out the fact that our decision making couldn't have been more wrong on that one and i think Woodward had a pretty big influence on that transfer as well because Lvg identified him as a target a year in Advance when we were chasing Him and Pedro but nothing happened and we kept playing on Mata and next year just dropped interest after Mourinho was recruited.

The mismanagement couldn't have been more Obvious which would have been avoided by a more Football person than Woodward.

This just means that now Ed can still control the transfers and someone else can take the blame when we fail. I'll only be satisfied if someone who is appointed is actually a football person and gets full autonomy without Ed's meddling.

How would you forsee this total autonomy working? How would you set up a situation where the board had no influence over the DoF? Would you have a firewall between the DoF and the management of the club where there was no attempt to give feedback and the only interaction was to carry on backing or sack?

It needs to be someone with United dna but that will be willing to evolve, adapt and innovate. I think there’s only perhaps Gary Neville and VDS of recent past players that have the presence, mentality, intelligence and acumen to potentially pull it off.

Reading the replies, it feels that some are looking for a mascot.

VDS would be a better option than Gary Neville. Just imagine Gnev and Mou working together . My favourite is Quieroz though. He's the right type, experienced and has a history with us.

So Gareth Southgate for Mourinho's boss?

Queiroz has never done anything but coach and has been at the Iran job since 2011. He's likely a year or two away from retirement too.

This perfectly describes the state of our club's management. Extremely reactive! no sense of pro active planning at all. Having a DoF is great, but it will take at least 3-5 years for results to show. And by then it might be too late! We are in danger of falling behind our rivals.

We should have hired a DoF as soon as Fergie made aware of his retirement plans instead of a finance guy handle football related stuff. Better late than never as they say, lets hope late is good enough!

So Gareth Southgate for Mourinho's boss?

Yes. The candidate with the right profile should have the authority to “boss” anyone, including Mourinho. Now I don’t have any personal experience regarding Southgate but if the club find he fit the profile then your question is without foundation.

Btw, find me a better candidate with the right credentials.

About time. Woodward can stick to the job he's suppose to do while a football manager will take of the football things.
