"...MEN understands United have renamed the inaugural club role as technical director and believe they are 'much, much closer' to making an appointment...
New full-time manager Solskjaer revealed he would have an input into United's process to identify a technical director but indicated executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward would make the final decision. Head of scouting Marcel Bout and head of development John Murtough have been touted as possible candidates...'

Wow, that only took a year!

Club officials will expect the technical director to focus on strengthening options for the first team squad and providing support for the management team.

In addition to this, the successful candidate will also be tasked with shaping a long-term recruitment strategy of integrating the club's academy.

Send Phil Neville to work with Ole and tell him answer to the name ‘McKenna’. No one will know the difference.

Wouldn't know the difference to what?

The difference between the two of them. McKenna and Phil Neville look quite alike. Guess my joke didn’t go over too well with you

McKenna is a far superior coach to Neville IMO. The way he had our u18s playing was an absolute joy to see. He also did a good job at Spurs before he joined us.

Your joke didn't register due to there being a big difference in Neville and McKenna's coaching abilities IMO.

*whoosh*

Why would the head coach have any input into hiring his own boss? Only this club would run in such a completely stupid manner.

Ole isn’t just some mercenary coach. He’s someone who lives and breathes United; he understands the club and the structures in place so it makes sense for him on a personal level to be involved. That on top of his role as manager, a role which will work closely with the new technical director.

It’s not a strictly vertical structure, I don’t think Ole will exactly be working under the Technical Director - it’s more of a symbiotic relationship of working together with the technical director working on the larger structures and future and the manager working on the here and now.

Ole is a football man, Woodward is a business man.

It’s not a stupid decision at all to have Ole consult on the process. It’s not as if Woodward said “who do you want? Person A? Yeah sure I’ll hire him this afternoon.”

Since when is the technical director the boss of the head coach/manager? Can you list the clubs that have this structure where technical director is superior to the manager?

Wow, that only took a year!
The root and branch review for an academy director took a similar amount of time also. I generally am bemused at how people think an archaic and monolithic corporate organization such as this could have a quick fix implemented that isn't just a corporate cockshaft appointment from board level that would change nothing. If you truly want this thing fixed it will take years, maybe even half a decade.

Why would the head coach have any input into hiring his own boss? Only this club would run in such a completely stupid manner.

There was some report few days back which said technical director won't be above manager, he will be alongside manager. So there is no middle man between Woodward and manager, it's both of them working together and at same level.

Just win trophies and criticism would die out. Isn't it the way of the football world?

2007/08 team was criticized, Ronaldo was criticized. Next?

There was a time some people said Ferguson was not a tactician and all he does is motivates players.

I recall when we lost to Derby in 98. Someone had a rant on the metro when we were heading back home. "Get rid of him now and bring in Martin O' Neill."

We won the treble that year!

City picked 2 guys from Barca, United are going to appoint from within...

Am I doing the moaning part right?
They picked 2 key people from Barca of the greatest period in club's football history.
We're gonna self-promote with a guy who associates himself with Moyes and Everton, the darkest days of our history.
Yes, failure runs so deep in our club that fans like you don't even do the moaning part right. :(

Sorriano and Txixi's record in the transfer window is far from spotless.

Yep I also remember after we lost to Newcastle 3-0 in the 11/12 season, an angry fan came on TalkSport and said "Fergie is finished, get him out right now!" I was angry about the result too but I certainly wasn't saying FERGIE OUT! We had it made, and we took it for granted while the great man was still here. I also seem to remember the 08/09 team were heavily criticised who went on to be PL champions and CL finalists, people are just never satisfied unfortunately and I guess we're all guilty of it to a certain degree.

Some people will criticise anything this club does.

With good reason no? Looks at what's happened

2013 - Fergie leaves with an ageing defence, non-existent midfield and a waning attack and we hire David Moyes to sort it all out
2014 - We hire LVG and man who hadn't been relevant in club football for years and let him bring in the likes Di Maria who never wanted to be here in the first place and a crocked Falcao and then let him bring in bang average shite like Schneiderlin & Darmian
2016 - We hire Mourinho as he'll be a cert to deliver success but then half way into his reign decide actually he doesn't fit the principles of the club which was obvious before he even got the job

They've thus far got lucky with Ole but who knows whether that luck runs out or turns out to indeed be the first bit of good business they've done in years

If I remember correctly, the whole of Caf had been clamouring for Schneiderlin, in fact I distinctly remember we confirmed Bastian's signing a day before Schneiderlin and even in Basti's confirmation thread there had been numerous posts saying we want Schneiderlin. Similarly, Darmian had been lauded as the Italian version of Neville when he signed and it was only after the Arsenal match where everyone turned on him. Everyone had been delighted when we got in Di Maria, Depay, Pogba, Zlatan etc. Its not the board's fault that they all flopped. LVG had been lauded as a maverick genius when we got him, and I don't need to remind anyone who was on here how the Caf had been salivating after Jose for months before he was confirmed. Perhaps its the people who are criticizing who need to take a good hard look at themselves as the board for the most part has been giving fans what they ask for. Ole's appointment is another example where everyone was clamouring for him to get the job, so if he fails tomorrow will you again blame the board for that?

Yeah that just didn’t go the way I hoped it would have at all
To be fair you need 200 IQ to understand the joke but hey, Mc Kenna and Phil Neville are like heaven and earth.

Phil Neville is cursed, He played for Everton under Moyes for ages. The class of Moyes.

Because it's not his boss, they will work alongside each other and at the end of the day, Solskjær should get the final say on all transfers, otherwise who's really in charge?

In theory there is a hierarchy and the technical director is above the head coach, simply because only one of them is hired to specifically manage the long term plans of the club. And the head coach shouldn't have the final say on all transfers otherwise you make the technical director redundant.

The reason none of the heavy hitting Europeans want the job of Technical/Sporting Director is because they wont have autonomy from Woodward.
As this is our first appointment absolutely no one knows the role or responsibilities so it makes sense to appoint from within to at least have them working on the same wavelength as Ole in planning our future strategy.

We're fans, we largely have no clue what we're on about, that's why the people that run the club get paid the millions they do because they are meant to know what they're on about

The reports about Phelan getting the job are alarming. When we finally appoint someone to this role, it really shouldn't matter whether they have any connection to the club or not.

The technical director needs to be able to have bags of contacts and the ability to create a clear plan. Above all, they should have previous experience of the role. All that bollocks about 'getting United' and 'having the United DNA' is a complete red herring. In fact, it could be a detriment to the sort of clear thinking we need.

The best period in United's history came when we appointed a manager (Ferguson) and a commercial director (Edward Freedman) from outside. This idea that we're some sort of special family is a modern myth that's going to do more harm than good.

Because it's not his boss, they will work alongside each other and at the end of the day, Solskjær should get the final say on all transfers, otherwise who's really in charge?

Of course he will be his boss. Tell me, if in a year's time, or 2 years or however long in the future it's time to move on from Ole. Who's going to be making that decision? Who's going to be appointing the next manager? Ole himself? Or do you want Woodward to retain that authority?

I thought the whole point of his DOF crap was that we don't end up with mismatched squads, and a mismatch of managers (going from lvg to Mourinho) with polar styles.

I understand the traditional aspect but the board and Solskjær are talking about the role as sharing responsibility as the manager just cannot be involved in negotiations and scouting all the time, there just isn't enough time in the day. I would fully expect the manager to have the final say on any potential appointments but the DoF will be the fall guy if our new recruitments don't work, which will ultimately give Solskjær more breathing space as manager.

And that's why I hope Ole will be similar to Fergie when it comes into signing players. Unexpected, young talents mixed with experience player that suit us. Most of LvG and Mourinho's signing were muppets' signings.

Thankfully, it seems like Ole knows which kind of players He wants and put United first and foremost. The man knows what it takes to be a successful ManUnited player. You can't compare him with LvG and Mourinho.

Why would we appoint someone to be Solskjær's boss? He doesn't need managing or telling who he's going to play, that's his job. Woodward isn't going to relinquish any power, he's just going to make sure Solskjær gets all the help and support he needs in his role to be successful, that includes splitting his responsibilities with someone who has time to meet with scouts and talk to agents on a regular basis.

Wait, so you want the manager to have the final decision but the DOF to be accountable for the managers decisions? What kind of way is that to run an organisation?

Why would the head coach have any input into hiring his own boss? Only this club would run in such a completely stupid manner.
Because they have to work together in terms of players, staffing, culture. What use would it be getting somebody in with a different vision.

Solskjaer isn't supposed to be involved in negotiations, we already have someone for that in Judge, he isn't scouting all the time we have a scouting department for that. A technical director is supposed to be in charge of all of these things link them and take decision for the mid to long term. What you are describing is a fudge where the technical director has zero responsibility, no mission.

Because you need someone to hold the manager accountable. Is Woodward the guy to decide if our football is going in the right direction? Whether we're making enough progress? Whether he's really getting the best out of the squad at his disposal?

Because they have to work together in terms of players, staffing, culture. What use would it be getting somebody in with a different vision.

Well that's a cock up of our own making now. The Technical Director/Director of Football whoever it is should've been appointed before the manager.
