Man Utd set to appoint Director of Football (when hell freezes over)

Pilib De Bruns tweet just seems like a speculation/opinion piece rather than him saying he has ITK info.

I’m keeping my eye on Mislintat because my hunch/theory is he’s secretly on some form of gardening leave from Arsenal until the end of the season and can’t officially start for a new club until the seasons done, and I think that new club might just be us.

we still have months, we don't need to rush. Do proper recruitment.
Generally clubs starting working on signings months in advance, I'm not sure someone could come in in the summer and immediately take that on. The key thing is obviously that we find the right person and if that takes time then fair enough but its a bit concerning that the club have been briefing about looking for one for ages and yet there seem to be no real concrete links which suggest whoever it is will have no or at least a very limited role in the appointment of a new manager and recruitment for this summer at least.

This person is an idiot. One of the biggest doom mongers when it comes to United.

Think of the most negative outlook and then present it as a fact seems to be his M.O.

Pilib is a clown. He was certain we wouldn't sack Mourinho until top for was mathematically done.
You have to be an idiot to believe those are the only three scenarios.

Clickbait.

United could have easily avoided much of the director of football debate but instead they have spent months leaking about their intention to hire one and how Jose stopped them from adding one years ago

The club have backed themselves into such a corner that it would be harder to say they aren't getting one.
Every journalist in the land, including those at the Beeb has said the club is adamant it wants to hire a DoF.

I feel like he could be right about point 2. I don't think we'll spend big this summer, we needed to last summer and bought 2 players who've barely played this season and I feel this will impact the Glazers decision on investing in a chunk of new players.

I also think if Ole is appointed permanent manager, he'll look to the youth teams and promote a few, whilst casting off the likes of Rojo, Darmian, Perriera and hopefully Lukaku and Sanchez. We'll make some signings, the big money one will most likely be Koulibaly.

Relieved that people have said the guy who posted the Tweet was unreliable. Was going to ask how reliable he was earlier but didn't have time to post. When I read it it was the worst case scenario I could imagine happening and something that I have been dreading happening.

Really hoping this is just a load of bollux.

2. They have no intention of spending big in the summer (a new appointment will need months to work on those deals)

THIS does not make sense, without a DOF we have already spent a lot, last year was dull because of the conflict with Jose, the previous years we spent a lot.

He's stating an opinion that plenty of people on here share and post often.

Then people can present their own opinions. Pilib’s opinions are no better than the average joe on here and certainly not worth posting.

This would play into the Glazers hands. A DOF needs to be appointed as soon as possible so he can assess the squad and plan signings. If we wait till the summer it will be a farce. If we are hiring a new manager. Woodward will waste time. He will also waste time hiring a DOF. If we dont sign a DOF soon I expect us to make 2 or 3 signings max in the summer. Woodward will brief how the club will see 'Poch as a new signing'. He has been briefing this DOF nonsense for years everytime there is any pressure.

Woodward was just asked in the conference call about the DoF and he seemed to do his very best not to give a straight answer. Makes me think we won’t get an announcement anytime soon. He said that the club have been making continual changes over the last 5 or so years and that the fruits of this labour have been and will be showing over the coming years as these changes aren’t easy to see from the outside. He pointed to the academy now churning out better players as a reward on the increased investment into it over the last few years.

Does sound very worrying.

"Lots has been written about this, we are looking at that and ways we can make the football structure stronger".

What's worrying about that?

I've not heard the full statement but that quote seems fine to me. Sounds positive and a step in the right direction.

However, I will take it with a pinch of salt until I see a confirmation of a DOF at United.

Nah. Standard CEO bs. Nice words, no real substance.
If the DoF rumors was anything more than bs to appease the fans when they turned their critical focus on Woodward/the Board again in the autumn they would have appointed one already. Most professional clubs are already working on the signings they are doing in the summer. Or they have already made them; Barcelona and Bayern.

The longer we wait, the more £££ we will have to pay for a player(unless meeting the clause), and more and more players will have already decided where they want to play next season...

Regardless on if he is the BS king, if you think logically, we really should be hearing some actual news on DoF appointments consistently if this was a thing that was actually happening. It needs to happen, but the reality is it needs to happen ASAP and not this summer, we're half way through February already. I hope i'm wrong but it's screamed of a ploy to get the fans off their backs from the beginning rather than it actually being a serious attempt to bring in a better footballing structure.

Philip De Brun managing to spout nonsense and sense in the same tweet.

The suggestion that we won't spend a lot is nonsense. We will spend £100-150m net in the summer. Of course, that's not going to get us to be the best team in the league but that's another question (whether the board are willing to sanction a big window to build a super team, they aren't).

It is however likely that a DoF will have minimal influence in the coming season. If we get a DoF any players we sign will be ones they have already done the groundwork on with another club. They won't be able to get in a type of player that we specifically want because he'll be hired so late.

I think it is meant that we will not spend £200m+ which is what we can call spending big these years. We spent £50m net and that was called "penny pinching". But i agree what we will spend around those amounts net in the summer.

The DoF should have been here already. Had hoped that they would appoint Mislintat in some sort of recruitementrole on friday... If we appoint one, he will be appointed after the season(Because "we could not find the time during the season since we had to find a new toiletpaper sponsor" or some similar nonsense argument), and he will be a lap dog/front figure for Woodward/the board. He will have no real influence as Woodward/Glazers will have the final say in all matters that would cost money. Glazers will keep the club until 2022 when the EPL and CL mediarights have been negotiated, then sell to the Saudis for £6-8b. And the club will go from being a cash cow for greedy Americans to being used to sportswash the Saudi regime.

Woodward talks about how we can do crazy things in the market, but we are being left behind in the market due to our poor pitch performances. You would think huge red flags would be popping up after a good manager in LVG looked completely clueless for us after doing reasonably well for Bayern and Netherlands. It would mean a shake-up in the way we do things...but nothing changed, we just hired another manager and pinned everything on him.

False "promises" to appease an angry fanbase. There are so many elements wrong with the club that it would be difficult to identify a single red flag among all the other red flags...

As I have stated before on previous threads, I do not expect an appointment of a Director of Football, because I believe Woodward already see's himself in this role. I agree with a number of forum members that a DOF., needs to be appointed well before the start of next season, and quite frankly Woodward has been saying that a DOF will be appointed for at least a couple of seasons.
I believe this will not happen besides the reason I have already stated but the time element. If we appoint a DOF., now he will be working with a manager who may be gone by the end of May. He will then have 3 months to work with and formulate a transfer policy with a new manager who will have only had minimum time to assess the squad and decide what players he requires for the new season. Or does the new DOF., formulate his own transfer policy without reference to the manager's requirements for the forth coming season.

Could just be that the managers we are looking at want full control. If it's Solskjaer, Pochettino or Zidane and they want full control, I'd say give it to them. I'd rather see us bring in a DOF, but I'd be happy with those managers in full control as well.

He really is the bullshit king. I've no belief a DOF is coming anytime soon, think it's even less likely if Ole does well and gets the manager job.
Why not? Woodward is many things but he's not a fool. And Ole has never publically been against such a role.

I just read an article that stated that Cantona is currently the bookies favorite for the role with odds at 1/1 according to Oddschecker. I don’t know if that’s a reliable source or not but I REALLY hope that’s not true. In what way could that be a good idea!?! How is an actor who has been out of the game for 20 years in any way qualified for this job?!

I wonder if we've approached Jordi Cruyff? He sounds like he has a good grasp of what the role entails plus he gets along with Ole.
He was in Manchester recently and met up with Ole.

I actually think we should try to recruit him. What do you ladies and gents think?

He runs the club like a giant ship which takes ample amount of time to change course and turn.
