But he's the buffer between the board and criticism.
He can't even do that properly, so what is the point keeping him?

Here, no, but in the press, yes.
At the moment the story is Jose and the team; who is to blame. No one seems to be seriously critiquing the board bar Neville.
The man was willing to part with 100 million quid for a defender and Perez refused.
The crazy thing is Woodward has tried to get him everything he's asked for and like every club he hasn't been able to deliver everything.
Mitten wrote the same thing in an article a couple of weeks ago. I wouldn't dismiss the story out of hand.Smacks me as a leak from Ed to appease the fans and subtly blame Jose.
The club is dead, we are offering contracts to dead wood, it's the beginning of the end.
They aren't thinking about saving £6million.
They are thinking about not having to pay him AT ALL if he makes top 4 by the skin of his teeth. Believe me, they would prefer him be here next season with a bunch of contract renewals for jobbers (again, way cheaper to renew the veterans who scraped us to top 4 than to go out and actively replace/upgrade on them).
They are happy with mediocrity as long as we scrape top 4. If that was to happen (it won't), Jose will be fired, but they'd prefer to not have to pay him off at all.
That's why we need a new manager NOW so that he can evaluate them for the rest of this season.Giving extension to Young is extremely ridiculous. Everything point to that next season is another write off and a struggle for top 4. Next manager will have all these deadwood and surely will ask to evaluate them himself, which will end in another top 4 battle, rinse and repeat.
Why would anyone want Maguire for that money. It's that sort of foolishness that had us buying Lukaku for 75 million. That seems to have harmed the club more than anything.Varane would never be sold for that money after WC and Real losing Ronaldo.
A crowd-pleaser of a news. No, we didn't want Maguire for 75, but best young defender in the world for 100. Right.

I agree with that. Nobody should sanction such deal for Maguire, but I firmly believe we were never in for Varane. Why would Real sell you their most valuable defender when Maguire is priced at £75m?
It was leaked after our window end up so underwhelming and it looked like it served just to calm the fans. Most people could tell Woodward right away he can't get Varane for £100m.
When I read that press brief, to me it didn't sound like we were talking about Varane specifically. The idea was that if a top callibre CB was available the club was happy to pay what was required to get him. But there wasn't, and the alternatives they were offered were either not good enough (i.e. Yerry Mina) or massively overpriced (Maguire)

Meanwhile Woodward is reading this and parallely typing contract extensions worth 200k/w for each of these!I dont mind them getting extended contracts, we need squad depth.
Rojo, Jones, Darmian and Valencia have no future at old trafford.

Woodward is the favourite person of the Glazers, which is why he has the say as far as what is going on at United right now. So there is the problem. Does anyone seriously think that he is suddenly going to make good signings in January? The guy is clueless as regards football matters. We are fecked...Meanwhile Woodward is reading this and parallely typing contract extensions worth 200k/w for each of these!

Indeed. I have already lost all hope until next season. Very less hopes for that too. Was he at the u18s tonight? I was watching the game but missed the screen when the commentators were talking about him.
Yes he was. Like I mentioned in a post earlier, he must have some sense. Being at the game today, maybe PR, shows he knows what our clubs core values are.
Or maybe he really believes he is our DoF?!
The club is dead, we are offering contracts to dead wood, it's the beginning of the end.
Been thinking the same thing. I don't like what that article is suggesting, Mourinho having a say in it makes me worried he'll get either a "yes" man or someone very like-minded. He shouldn't have any say in it at all really, considering the DoF will hopefully be here for a long time after Mourinho's gone. At least the board are getting input on someone who actually knows something about football, silver linings and all that.I have no faith whatsoever that the people in charge of the club will pick the correct person for DOF.
A lot of people on here want it to be a long-term strategic position, but when we appoint the wrong guy, does he get sacked independently of the manager? What is the DOF’s success criteria?
Unless he’s given control over transfers and/or scouting, which he absolutely won’t be, he’ll just be another windbag sticking his opinion into the mess we already have.
We have at least £200m of talent that is misfiring under this manager (Pogba, Lukaku, Fred) - someone needs to convince Woody that using £24m to potentially unlock that is a sweet deal.
The same thing was reported about a couple of months ago. We're gonna wait till he's gone before we modernise the setup. It's just frustrating that they won't relieve him now..
I don't believe it's £6m because Duncan Castles is reporting it. He's so biased towards Mourinho I don't believe a word he writes. They are desperate to save £6m (£18m payout vs £24m) by waiting until top 4 is mathematically gone.
