Mahrez | Signed with City

Bloody hell, if they don't get Mahrez after losing out on Sanchez, Pep is going to be having a right tantrum.

if they had come to us at the start of the window I'm certain we would have seen the move happen as we could have been able to get a replacement and would likelike have accepted a deal worth around 70-75m even if there was a player thrown in with less cash

Al the articles I’ve seen on this are obvious briefings from City. The Guardian and BBC Sport. Only portraying Citys perspective.

Leicester must be annoyed, Mahrez has been unsettled (can’t play tonight) then Manchester City tried to lowball them. Hope we hear from Leicester soon too for balance.

Why though? He already has a massive amount of attacking talent. If he really does expect the owners to shell out £60m on a player just to cover an injury to Sane for a couple months he's an utter arse.

keep an eye on John Percy's twitter feed

City's PR attempts are embarrassing. Unsettle the player, negotiate for a fee, don't get it their way, turns out "never made a bid". Reflects poorly on Mahrez (though I do find it understandable) but surely the journos who have been tooting Pep's horn for how principled he is must now feel exposed.

It's not about sustainability, principles or morals. They didn't want to pay Sanchez more than their current stars. That's it. But they were happy to throw 120-130m on two players in the last moments of the window.

Aren't Leicester slightly crazy for wanting a deal worth £95m (according to BBC)? He can't be worth that much to them. Though I guess he would be hard to replace. Mahrez might feel somewhat hard done by though.

given how much money there is for each place is we sell him and end up 12th we would have lost a shit ton of money there, this way we look faves for 7th outside chance of catching Arsenal for 6th and a Europa place and can make a run at the FA Cup

Mahrez at this point in the transfer window is pretty much impossible to replace adequately, without getting completely fleeced themselves. What exactly do people expect from them? Losing him this late in the window would be extremely damaging for them, even if they sell him for less in the summer it still makes sense to keep him right now. It's up to City to convince Leicester away from that position, and the only way to do that is by offering substantial compensation, i.e. more than such a player would normally cost at an earlier point in the transfer window. They've failed to do that and people are blaming Leicester?

It's funny watching City trying to both simultaneously spend vast amounts of money whilst attempting to be morally self righteous by not overspending.

What on earth were Manchester City doing leaving a £70m+ deal to the last day of the transfer window???

I'm not blaming them, I'm just a bit surprised that they were cool headed enough to turn down 60m or whatever.

Not really. They were dealing with City who have limitless resources, on deadline day, with no time to get a replacement. £60m is nothing when players like Sigurdsson are going for £45m. They should still be able to get £60m in summer if they want.

My lack of extremity one way or the other might not be welcome in this thread, but I'm of the opinion they probably should have met in the middle. Not worth £95m, but worth more than £65m.

I think given the situation whereby he wanted out (and Leicester are probably stuck with an unhappy player who could down tools at any minute) they should have lowered their demands to around £80m, they could have maybe chucked a load of money at Leverkusen for Bailey or something as a replacement and then reinvested elsewhere.

Whether City would have gone to £80m or not though I don't know.

Not surprising.

Premier league teams are flush with money. Only a select few on the continent can truly compete.
It is a bit surprising considering they haven't been in the PL that long, haven't got a huge stadium or a huge amount of fans.

Maybe the premier league win helped. Especially in marketing terms.
Must have helped with marketing and fans. I'm not sure what the prize itself is for winning the PL, but it won't have been responsible for getting them that far up the list.

Then there is the wealth of our owners

Algeria is in the world cup, right ? He has to remain motivated for the rest of the season. He will definitely leave in the summer though, even if he has to buy himself out of the contract. The boy does not want to be there.

I wonder what player they were offering in return. Fair play to Leicester for holding firm. This doesn't look at all good for Mahrez though.

Algeria aren't going to drop mahrez unless his leg is hanging off.

Someone else said it already, but what a dick move by Man City. Three days from the deadline, knowing full well Leicester wouldn't have time to find a suitable replacement, they submit a low-ball offer for Leicester's best player, causing him to get unsettled and hand in a transfer request. He missed the Everton game (which they lost) because of it, and now he's stuck at a club he doesn't want to be at, with the fans knowing he tried to force his way out. Man City thought they could force Leicester to sell to them for cheap because of the circumstances.

Props to Leicester for giving Man City the finger.

Am I crazy for thinking that if he has a great world cup his market value will go higher to the point where no club would be willing to meet the valuation Leicester would put on the player and he'd get stuck there until mid 2020 ?

Seriously, they value him at 95m now, after the world cup he will cost more than Neymar in Leicester's eyes. You have to wonder why they allowed Kante and Drinkwater to go so easily and are playing hardball here.

Is he going to the world cup?

Kante had a release clause, Drinkwater wasn’t our best player and we had his replacement ready
