Maguire's Redemption | One-year option triggered

He will really benefit playing in a back three. It's arguably the best formation for him.

I would consider triggering his one year extension and then reassessing things in a years time. He'll be 33 by the end of next season, so that may be the right time to let him go.

Lets be honest, minor one wobbly campaign, he's largely been consistently decent for us.

He and Lisandro tooo turns to shut Haaland out superbly. Fantastic.

De Light at RCB and Maguire at CCB seems a better fit.

No. As much as I appreciate his contribution, we should sell him while he finally got his stocks rise up a bit. We as a club are still hampered by FFP.
His contract is up at the end of this season

And it'll be a pretty scummy thing to do if we extend his contract just for the sake of selling him. We are basically screwing him out of any signing bonus he might get from his new club

If we intend to do that, we'd have to do that at the end of last season, and that opportunity is long gone now

We paid 80m for him and pay him 200k a week. There would be absolutely nothing scummy about trying to make some of that investment back.

If Amorim feels he has something to offer the squad then I’m all for keeping him, but if he doesn’t and there is some money to be made, then we should be doing what makes most financial sense for us - not for multi-millionaire Harry Maguires potential signing on bonus at a new club.

We won't sell him. He'll either leave on a free probably to some top Serie A club like McTominay, or we'll trigger his 1 year extension option, or offer him a 1-2 year extension on possibly reduced terms. I think he'd probably agree to a 2 year extension on 150k/week over a 1 year extension on his current 190k/week wages.

He's one of the best CCBs around for a back 3, and if his body allows it, he can be our starting CCB for at least 2-3 more seasons. Just needs two pacey defenders around him to eat up space and protect him on transitions. But that's also how other teams set up to protect their slowest CBs out of possession. Yoro fits the bill. The likes of Martínez, Lindelöf, or Evans aren't ideal but Licha might have a place in the team for the qualities he brings on the ball. However a real athletic space eater LCB will probably be pursued in one of the upcoming transfer windows.

And it doesn't really matter whether it's Maguire or De Ligt at CCB, both of them will need that sort of pacey protection around them. But Maguire is a better passer, better ball carrier, and he's much more dominant in the air too, so he would be my first choice there.

Yeah, think it makes sense that we keep him for a couple more years. Not a big problem and this 3 at the back means we need numbers as well.

Happy for him. Good to have quality starter and depth options at both CB and RCB. De Ligt is the 1st choice and can play either CB or RCB, Maguire can come in at CB, Yoro will develop at RCB, Mazraoui can rotate at RCB... 4 options that I have full trust in. Even Lindelof can go at RCB better than he could in a 4 at the back system I think. Just need another LCB to get some fitness so Martinez isn't all we have there.

I want us to go with De Ligt Maguire Martinez for the time being. Ten Hags high line hung Maguire out to dry. If you play a lower line Maguire can head the ball away all day and cope with physical battles, hence the reason why Mourinho wanted him in the first place. Hes not the greatest player, but in the right system he can be solid.

Even top CBs like Romero is made to look a clown when playing suicidal high lines and facing numerous one v ones every game.

Maguire at CB also frees up Mazraoui to play RWB, and Diallo further forwards. The team looks so much better balanced. We just need to sort out the left hand side now.
We generally had one of the higher defensive lines in the league under Ole while having one of the lowest defensive lines in the league under ETH. Indeed Maguire's best ever season was 20/21 which was the highest defensive line we've played in his time here, and his worst two seasons were 21/22 and 22/23 which was when we played the deepest defensive lines. I'm confident Amorim will also play with a higher line than ETH.

It was ETH's ridiculous set-up of having his defence sit deep (albeit not quite as deep as the two previous seasons) while having our midfield and attack push high up which caused us to be so open last season. We just gave opposition teams a ridiculous amount of space in the middle to run through. But even then, Maguire actually got back into decent form last season.

Been a huge critic of him over the years but I can't fault his professionalism, don't think its a coincidence that all of our managers (including the current one) have liked him. Delighted he's turning it around and I'm no longer at the point of considering him a liability whenever I see him on the teamsheet, especially in this back 3 setup which seems to suit him quite nicely.

He was crap for at least 3 years.

However, as one of his biggest critics, I'm really happy for him and glad he shut me up. He's someone who will definitely benefit from this formation and will add a lot to the squad.

He'll be here for next season. We'll be looking at integrating Yoro more and more as time goes on, so having an extra body like Maguire coming to the end of his career would make a good way to rotate them in.

Yesterday's performance was Maguireldini, where has he been all these years, aggressive, good passing, confident on the ball under pressure. Amorim has had a good affect on him.

His calmness yesterday really make me scratch my head at some of his previous mistakes. They were really, really bad, and regular. The formation really doesn’t matter when it comes to basic stuff, and for a time there was genuine concern he couldn’t do any of it. Yesterday, there wasn’t a moment in the game where I had less than 100% confidence he would be fine. Weird.

Huge respect for him. Model professional and a great example for younger players on how to deal with the pressure and spotlight of playing for United.

Not that weird, players have fluctuations in form rather than a set skill level. Even VVD looked poor at times for Liverpool last season. We fans often have recency bias in judging talent and forgot small fluctuations in form can make big differences at this level.

His place is going to be an issue there's no getting away from that but he offers a lot in this system. His ability to spread the ball I think will be really useful.

Yeah, I can't see a situation whereby Maguire isn't extended for maybe 2 years at less pay. I feel that Yoro.- de Ligt - Martinez is probably where it is heading long term for the rest of the season but Maguire as the first replacement is good. If we can get a youth like Kukonki in from next year as the 5th choice and then use Maz in a pinch then we are looking alright.

Well, yes.

But "decent" was never going to be enough given the price tag.

And because of the price tag, a lot of fans (who didn't fancy him and/or didn't like that we spent so much on him) never cut him any slack at all.

He's always been a decent player (at the highest level) with certain flaws (most players have 'em).

And like every other player in history, he has to be used in a role that suits his strengths and weaknesses.

ETA Would be interesting to see how "Maguire is utter shit" and "Amorim is our saviour" would fare in a Venn diagram type of setting.

He's always been better in a back 3 vice playing in a CB pairing. He fits in Amorim's set up and would be an excellent squad option and he'd still start many matches over the season. Not sure if he wants that type of role, but I'm now completely fine with Maguire in this set up and would be happy for the club to extend him or just pick up his option.

He was our best performing Centre-Back last season. Solid every time. (Shout out to Evans too never let us down whenever he played).

Maguire it looked like at times singlehandedly did his best in saving ten Hag's job last season winning almost every aerial duel and getting his body in the way by blocking every shot he could.

Before Christmas he was arguably our best player. iirc he picked up a Premier League Player of the month award

This season he's missed a couple of months through injury and only made a few starts but he's been ok whenever he's played..

Yesterday as the central CB against City he was solid.
Had Halaand in his pocket.

I loved how he was the first man over to back up Hojlund during both incidents with Walker and Dias. Pushing away the cheating blue bastards from swarming over Hojlund. Well in Harry!

He hasn't changed as a player. It's not a renaissance.

I was never as critical as most but what's changed is his role. He's gone from captain to squad player.

Less pressure, less opportunity to make mistakes, can stay fresher.

Never was as bad as made out. His mentality is amazing.

The price tag really hurt him and others here.

He looks more comfortable in a 3. Slightly less responsibility and plays to his strengths; getting his head to the ball. He's also decent at cross field balls. And an aerial presence...

He is, most CB's are really. It's easier for them as a 3.

But his attributes and negatives are the same whatever the system.

Best thing that's happened to Maguire is less pressure and less focus via a much reduced role.

Not many go from captain to squad player.

Considering he's been consistently the best centre back at the club for over a year, I'm not sure you can still call it a redemption story.

New contract should be a priority (after Amad’s) he’s obviously never relied on pace and avoided injuries better than most so I can see him performing at this level for a good few years yet.

Given we need to add centre backs to have sufficient cover with the 3-5-2, and I'm assuming that Lindelof and Evans will leave in the summer, triggering the extension or a new 2+1 deal on reduced terms makes complete sense.

With a contract of 200k, not sure if that is correct but I'm going with it. Do you really think so one is going to offer a transfer fee when Maguire can run down his contract anyway?

On the flip side, if we feel he has use for that extra year, then go for it. It's better to have him rather than spend money on his replacement.
