Maguire or Lindelof: Who should be our starting CB in Varane’s absence?

Lindelof is the biggest fecking fraud I've seen in quite some time.

Everytime he plays we concede goals in the prem. The fecker is soft as tissue. Needs to leave the club and be replaced. Would rather play the youth like Mengi instead.

Even Maguire is better in his current fragile state.

It’s actually remarkable we once ended second playing the both of them together

Lindelof just doesn't have it in him. We all know it by now.

Centre back still an area that we should strengthen sadly.

The one game we get tested Lindelof fails his audition.

Easy to look good against an Everton and Omonia that sit back all game, whilst having Martinez next to him doing all the ball playing, covering and 'hard' defending.

Insane that people think 'Lindelof plays the ball faster, is a faster player, doesn't shit the bed'. Biggest actor and fraud of a player we've had in recent times.

I said Lindelof. I was completely wrong.
Even I said so, but he is absolutely tosh. That third goal, first weak in the air and then a coward while just backtracking (which is all that he does). Pathetic defender. We need a good backup to Varane and need to feck off both Lindelof and Maguire.

Backing off backing off lindebackingoff aannndddddd it’s a goal.

Thought Lindelof might've been the best of out of the two to partner Martinez with Varane our, more so under a new manager and getting back to at least being fairly solid all rounder but I've seen for two years how timid and cowardly passive he is and nothing has changed. Maguire to me has really slowed up, looks so clumsy in tackles since he came back against Leicester last year. I have kittens thinking about either playing regularly so I guess we get Maguire back in, he at least looks a touch leaner this season. Better to have little and large than little and timid.

It's kind of sad these two international players don't have what it takes but I wouldn't have bought either. Lindelof was shocking when he first came here, car crash stuff. He should be at his peak at 28 6ft 2, has some good passing in him, decent build yet is always jogging back, standing off and getting thrown around and eased out by so many players. With Maguire being 30 and quite a large lad that was already slow I can see how we've seen his best with his physique, was a lot of money for a short and mediocre spell

Kneejerk squad all over the thread.

I remember Lindelof playing a game very early in his United career away at Huddersfield where he was weak and passive and thinking this guy has to toughen up. 5 years later he hasn't. We've won feck all since he joined, obviously not entirely his fault but he's clearly not good enough.

They both do the same crazy thing getting sucked in and we concede with a simple ball through or over. There's been many hammerings by Spurs, Liverpool with Maguire doing it and even going back to a time where these guys were supposedly good against Istanbul, both of them vacated the defence. Key stone cops doesn't cover it.

I’d honestly rather we played Tuanzebe and Mengi over either of Lindelof and Maguire if Varane and Martinez aren’t fit, Lindelof gets rag dolled by big strikers and backs off for 30 yards when faced with pace whilst Maguire is slower than my Nan both in pace and on the ball.

We don't concede two of those goals with Maguire in the team,

I mean, we concede two equally comical goals sure, but those specific goals we don't concede.

Lindelof doesn't make a tackle, Maguire tries to make one but completely misses the mark and takes the man more often than not.

It's just horrible.

Is it too much to ask for defenders who can defend?

They’re both dog sh*t. As soon as Varane got injured I knew we’d struggle until he was back. I’d honestly prefer to see Phil Jones in there, at least he’d put in some effort.

Until the next game, when Maguire drops a massive clanger too.

Just keep rotating them depending on how they perform. Maguire ended up (after a slow start) having a good game against WH and should have kept his place. If he has a shocker next game, move Lindelof back up the pecking order. If they both keep being shocking, do something about it in January.

Is this even a debate? It's Lindelof and clearly ETH agrees. Maguire only got in because Lindelof wasn't available.

It’s clearly a debate though aint it? Cause Lindelöf is absolutely fecking awful.

It’s been a repetitive thing though with the Swede for some bizarre reason since he came, when he’s out of the side for a while or another defender is out of form, a load of our fans start acting as though he’s dependable Vic who fits in great with high lines and passing from the back.

The bloke is a non-defender, truly woeful, which should have been evident to everyone when he got bullied every single week in his debut season.

What did he do wrong versus villa to get so much hate? Do you blame the first goal on him? Maybe but Martinez or one of Eriksen or Casemiro should have covered for him imo

For me it a toss up, against low blocks Lindelof, when we expect to get pushed back Maguire.

You're overblowing it there a bit. Lindelof has his issues and I don't think there are many in doubt about that but the point is Maguire is a lot worse, especially when playing a high line which ETH favours.

But the problem is that the other choice is Maguire. He can desert the defense, take out our own players and be absolute bonkers, disturbing the whole team. It is just that some weeks on bench has made us not feel the horror anymore.

Maguire, probably. But he's hardly a great backup option at the moment and it's debatable whether he's got much of a future at United. If it were up to me, I'd work actively on making a deal with someone (a PL club) for him as soon as possible (January), and then bring in a reasonably priced 3rd choice CB (primarily a backup for Varane). With a bit of luck, Maguire has a decent WC, which should make it easier to get a deal done.

Lindelof isn't going to cut it and is expendable long-term, but I'd keep him for now, underwhelming as he is.
