Maguire or Lindelof: Who should be our starting CB in Varane’s absence?

Lindelof easily. Maguire is slow and even more wank.

Short memories with Lindelöf, he’s a fecking terrible defender, and soft as feck/passive to boot. We’re worse when he plays, because he never trusts himself to get tight and win a ball.
Obviously it goes on form, and Maguire was of course in worse form, but when both are playing ”well” Maguire is simply better. Considering he played well against West Ham, he should keep his place for now.

Yup. Passive defender who doesn’t go in for the tackle until the opponent dribbles into the box. Also can’t win a free header.

Maguire is the better defender, but in our tactical setup Lindelof does less harm than Maguire so Lindelof all day long.

It's almost like they're two halves of a single player. Neither one is close to the full package so the decision is situational. You're kind of fucked either way IMO.

If we're consistently dominating possession, Lindelof is better on the ball. If we're pinned back, Maguire is a better inside the box defender.

And on the opposite side of the spectrum you have Maguire diving into a tackle at the half way line (did it againt West Ham and strangly didnt get booked - lucky Martinez saved him) and takes himself out of the play. I believe Maguire his stats are 50/50 on when he goes in for a tackle. That is a 50% chance the opponent will be going towards goal with Maguire on the floor or slowly stomping back towards his own goal.

Hopefully Maguire stays fourth choice centre back until he is sold.

Which is exactly why he's a much better partner for Martinez than Maguire is.

Lindelof only lost his place due to an illness so by the theory of played well in last game Lindelof deserved to come straight back in.

It’s an argument of shite & shire’s at this point though. I trust neither in truly meaningful moments.

LIndelof easily. I'd play Mctominay as CB over Maguire.

Just to add Maguire is the better defender in a low block, in a defensive set up. However for our set up, the way ETH wants us to play, you saw how bad he was against West Ham, slow and ponderous on the ball.

Lindelof every day.

Is this a serious discussion? Maguire should be nowhere near our starting eleven. Lindelof has his own serious weaknesses but at least does not sleep during the game and can also pass the ball non-suicidally.

It's a tough one.

Maguire is better when he's in good form, but he's worse when in terrible form. Lindelof is hardly a paragon of consistency but he's still more consistent than Maguire.

In the last 18 months Maguire has been mostly terrible, so if we hold him to that 'recent' form then the answer should be Lindelof. Hell, even if we look at his time here as a whole he's been terrible more than he's been great. Bad - 14 months. Great - 6 months. Inconsistent with constant up and downs - 14 months.

On the other hand, the team as a whole is generally playing better and looking more solid than at any other time since Maguire has been here. Perhaps in this environment we'd be more likely to see the good Maguire, so he should get the nod (he was decent against West Ham).

I'm leaning towards Lindelof (and up until now ETH seems to have been doing the same), but I don't think there's really any 'right' answer at the moment.

Neither is good enough, but it depends on the situation. If we're on the front foot then Lindelof always. He's quicker and distributes the game better.

If we're playing low block then Maguire, he's good in the air. Play him in the last 10-15 minutes if we're winning and hanging from posts.

Lindelof, amd that's who ETH has been playing. He fits our tactical setup much better. Maguire is probably Martinez's backup or fourth choice.

Im gonna say Maguire but that is just because of my opinion of Lindelof who is probably one of the worst CBs who played for this club in 30 years

They both going to be playing in the next round of the Europa if Varane isnt fit!

Lindelöf for most games, easily. Maguire can be useful against physical teams but then he’s one of the reasons that we have to sit deeper and cease control (which creates situations in which he’s actually good). Not the only reason, of course, but one of the bigger ones.

Lindelof by far. Maguire kills build-ups by dwelling on the ball far too much. The reason we don't create much is because we move the ball too slowly. Last thing we need is the master of dwelling on the ball. Hs's also too slow meaning our high line will be significantly compromised and he barely wins anything in the air when it matters meaning his one supposed strength is useless. There is literally no use for Maguire in the team.

Lindelof comfortably. Maguire dives in all the time whilst playing a high line.

Is this even a debate? It's Lindelof and clearly ETH agrees. Maguire only got in because Lindelof wasn't available.

All his usual flaws were there to see when we played a high line in the first half. He only looked good when we retreated to a low block in the second half but that's not our preferred way of playing under ten Hag.

If he could stay fit, the correct answer would be Tuanzebe. But unfortunately he seems to be another Bailly with Phil Jones tendencies.

Biggest headache is that they’re both slow although Maguire’s was put in some good performances lately, notably against West Ham. If it were put to a straw poll, Lindelöf would probably win on the basis of popularity although there’s not that much difference between them in my view.

Lindelöf. Not that I particularly like him, but I’d much rather have him than Maguire.

Don’t want to see Maguire start, nor wear the captains armband for this club ever again.

Flip a coin. If it's heads then that's obviously Maguire.

Also, if it does land on heads then check if Jones can play first, if not, do a best of three.

Maguire should only ever be used when ETH intends to sit back and absorb preasure so Maguires skill set can be useful. So basically last 20 min sub or something. It’s Lindelof all day, every day until Varane returns.

Sticky one... pick your poison.

Lindelof was disgraceful today; he has his chance to solidify his position, but somehow works it so he looks untenable as a starter. Incredulous.

We need 2 new CB. Maguire and Lindelof need to be binned.

They’re both absolutely dogshit.

Shit in different ways, but still shit nonetheless.
