Maguire or Lindelof: Who should be our starting CB in Varane’s absence?

The guy doesn't scan around him and he has as much leadership skills as a Cucumber. There's a reason why United's defence had collapsed when he was around

Can see both of them on Sunday.. Forest away . Long season and been fecked by injuries suspensions. And still fighting for more trophies. ..let's hope those two can be relied on

Dalot. Now that AWB is making the RB position his own, I wouldnt mind testing Dalot there. He has good positioning, he is quicker than Maguire, and his heading is fine.

You wanna test him...now?

I mean to be entirely fair, Maguire and Lindelof as a pairing in the 2020/21 season was actually not all that bad. Nowhere near Varane and Licha, sure, but it was only when the entire team went to shite last season that they looked properly terrible.

We should still be capable of winning the majority of our remaining games with those two in the backline to be honest, provided that the rest of the side is still vaguely competent.

Personally I’d prefer Maguire. He has bigger flaws than Lindelof, such as his tendency to dwell on the ball and invite pressure, and his inability to deal with that pressure, but he offers more in terms of commanding the box and passing. Lindelof makes fewer mistakes, but he just does less overall - he’s a bit of a nothing player really.

But I definitely don’t want to see them play together as a CB pairing - as in, not ever again. They bring the worst out of each other, each compounding the flaws of the other. It’s like an anti-Rio and Vidic pairing.

Once Shaw is back I'd have him at LCB, with Maguire at RCB. Not ideal but should be good enough, especially with Casemiro back. Yes it means Malacia at LB, but I think he's serviceable there despite having a very poor game last night.

I don't rate Lindelof at all tbh.

We only have Lindelof available for Brighton next week as Maguire is suspended.

I would start with Lindelof and bring Maguire on if we are under the cosh and start to retreat at the end of a game.

That's what I'd do.
What I think will happen is that the ETH will use Maguire. Even Maguire scored 2 own goals, he'd still pick Maguire.
ETH does seem to rate Maguire highly, benching him only when he has a CB who has won the World Cup available to replace him.

I imagine Shaw will slot in at LCB if he's available for the FA cup game.

There are options if our two best centre backs are out for the season but it just doesn't fill me with confidence, especially playing out from the back where Martinez has been so important in that regard.

Yeah I'd expect so. I was impressed with Shaw when he played there. I think we lose more at LB than we do in Martinez to Shaw at CB.

It’s Shaw plus another. I don’t think Lindelof is capable of playing every 3 days due to his back. He spoke earlier this season how whilst he wasn’t happy about not being first choice the reduced games helped his back.

Yeah he's done well there but i still think it will be Lindelof and Maguire as first choice. Got to be honest, it's a not combination i like at all as they often drag each other down but needs must.

I think he might go Shaw and Maguire as first choice.

I for one think we are in for a surprise and will see the best performance by maguire and Lindelof that’ll be crucial to us winning another trophy or two.

My worry would be that Nottingham Forest's threat is in the mobility and movement of Johnson and the dynamic runs of Gibbs-White from deep areas. It's not a big threat aerially, or in physical contact. Which makes a Lindelof/Maguire partnership quite unappealing as I think that is the exact partnership they would like to exploit by getting into the sides and exploiting the poor reactions and recovery of Maguire and Lindelof. Forest are not interested in posession either, they will draw us forward to increase the distances between our players and isolate our sluggish CBs.

If Shaw is fit I might go for him and Maguire to help counter this threat. Maguire because he hasn't been too shaky in the last few appearences and Shaw to give us quicker buildup and some extra recovery pace. Lindelof and Maguire are so slow at deciding what to do with the ball. Slow everywhere in fact.

This idea does come with its own problem, though. We then have to play Malacia who has been very poor in the last few games. But it seems like the lesser evil, to me.

After Forest we have Spurs, Villa and Brighton. :wenger: :nervous: Safe to say we're probably dropping some points with these 2 bozos at the back.

Shaw LCB and Malacia LB will be the main thing, this weekend I don't think Shaw returns though. Or it's a risk we can avoid IMO.

Time for them to step up and prove their worth. Especially Maguire who loves to talk about how good he is, no more words, prove your worth. Shame he has literal zero positional awareness in a game.

The chuckle brothers are.back!

Jesus fecking Christ.

It's 2023. After spending all those money, all we got are still these brothers to finish the season. And it seems like it's better to keep our CB pair from 10 years ago.

They're international footballers. They arent Benson and Hedges from the non-leagues. They should be fine against the likes of Forrest FFS.

If his back is better after all that rest surely he can tough it out for the remainder of the season?
