Maguire | he stays!

Yep, he's staying for another season. We can't be looking into CB's this summer as well as every other position, and we've missed out on the Kim bloke to Bayern so expect to see Maguire starting at some point.

On the plus side, maybe a better GK will bring better performances out of him? I always felt like he was trying to overcompensate for De Gea's lack of decision making, which ultimately led him to do things he shouldn't have been doing.

Having Onana is pointless, if you have Maguire playing in front of him. He shits himself under pressure. Please just get this guy out of the club, I'd accept 20M.

Guess they think even if they sold him they'd have to cover £100k a week in his wages and would only get £10 million for him so its better to have him as a 3rd choice CB than get an upgrade whos also going to want another £150k a week. What a mess.

4th choice CB works hard in pre-season, gets abused for doing so by cafe.

4th choice CB, who cost us major goals last season, is not compatible with our style of play, and has a wage well over 200k. Gets abused because of blatant tonedeaf PR spin about "working hard".

If he stays, he'll feature in 30+ games, including sub appearances. It's a long season, 4 competitions and injuries happen. He got 31 games last year remember.
I think he’ll play less this season. He started last season as first choice, before getting replaced in the starting XI by Varane. Then he lost his first backup place to Lindelof and Shaw. So he is starting the season as fifth choice.

Scratching my head trying to work out the logic behind your idea here.

I don't see Onana offering any mitigation. He's going to want to give the defenders the ball in risky positions which Harry takes ages to deal with. He's going to suit playing high so he can goalkeep proactively. If anything it could exacerbate the issues and place more scrutiny on HM.

It gives Harry an out when under pressure, and Onana's sweeping ability means Harry can be slow off the mark without too much issues. Needs to learn to read the game a whole lot better though. There are plenty of issues that aren't related to speed and agility in his defending, and he needs to sort that out if he wants to become a competent defender at the level we need - which is a tall ask at this point.

I really hope we manage the budget well enough to bring in one or two new defenders with Jones and Bailly both set to leave. Unless Harry improves massively, I just don't see why we should play him ahead of a new guy and one of the kids.

Makes sense - we're not going to say we're expecting £35/£40m because then people would bid around £25m.

Say we want £50m, but we'd probably acccept £35m

Yep and especially where we’re expected to give around 10m to Maguire to cover the difference in wages as earlier reports suggested.

So it's up to the club to sell him

Spot on. Offer 40, but ask for 5 back as subsidy towards his above-market rate wages. Everyone goes away happy.

People rightly decry the pathetic fees United pull in on player sales, but then moan when the club shows a bit of derring-do. It gets very tiresome.

40 + 20% sell-on in case he gets bought by the Saudis a year into his deal seems appropriate.

Not exciting news but I like that we're trying to get more money for him. He's OK 5th choice defender, although he will be mostly used to win headers when opposition is bombing us with crosses.

£50M for a 5th choice

We don't expect to actually get 50m, hasn't the signing of Mount literally in the last few weeks taught you lot anything?

To be fair, if he was still anywhere near the level of the player we thought we signed, we probably would have gotten £50M.

I think he's worth easily around 30m. He could do a job at a team that suits him. But with his wages and our ability to sell do I think we'll get what he's worth? No.

Meh, same way Chelsea wanted 80m for Mount. Truth is we have some really good CBs and we could do with a different profile of a player, but Maguire would do well in a different system. He just doesn't fit current United. Doesn't mean he isn't worth say 35-45m for a different party.

I think people are trolling. Maguire cannot be valued over 30m and even that is stretching the limits.

His reputation is in tatters though. Anyone buying him would have to deal with fan reaction to buying him as well.

Sounds very logical and the club are looking efficient for once.

£50m will be from a negotiation stand point like we’ve done with all our business this summer.

Hopefully it will be Spurs want him for £25m +5m and we sell him for £35+5m.

Eitherway if he stays I’m happy with him as 4th choice with Onana in goal. He won’t be that bad of a choice.

can he do anything else? help with the filing or answer the phones? serve in the canteen? take the bins out, even?
