Maguire | he stays!

30 is prime age for a CB, he could have another 3-4 good years and still picking up a paycheck for a few more on top of that.
Unfortunately, at his prime age, he is hardly good enough and commands too much in wages. So he prefers to sit it out on the bench for another 2 years and collect his pay than to take a pay cut and play elsewhere. Why should he bother moving?

I think it was Phil Jones' last post on Instagram for about 6 years. I just checked and he's made 3 posts when he left, he has his wedding photo from 2017 and everything else is deleted. He basically got harassed on social media so seems to have dropped off completely. I remember an interview with the guardian where he mentioned he got it in person too even when he was with his daughters.
That's awful :(

Its funny the hyperbole and total disrespect at times.

People are talking as if nobody will buy him. He's been an integral part of England's first team for 5/6 seasons now, one of the first names on the teamsheet.

Aston Villa start Mings week-in, week out. Tottenham start Eric Dier. Rob Holding and Ben White played regularly for Arsenal last season. Marc Guehi at Palace, Lewis Dunk and Adam Webster at Brighton, Tarkowski and Coady at Everton, Dawson at West Ham...

I could go on, but point is, if Maguire is so terrible, how come he's starting ahead of these lads who all play for Premier League rivals?

He's never relied on pace, so he's still got 3/4 seasons in him - find the idea that someone wouldn't pay £30m/£35m pretty staggering really...if I was David Moyes I'd pay that all day long for a player of Maguire's calibre
You’ve missed his excellent fitness record, which he’s even managed to maintain while at United; an injury graveyard for centre backs over the years.

Surely that’s something a decent salesman would bring up in the event of potential buyers scratching their chins over his high wages?

Imagine this:
He stays
He scores a goal when we're losing 1-0
He does his "I can't hear you" celebration at 90th minutes for a total of 1 minute, draw.. 1-1
At 92th min he tackles a player and gives away a penalty
The game ends 2-1 (we lose)
The fans boo him and he taunts them back "Catch me outside how about that? I'm rich you are not"

Feeling angry yet?

If he doesn’t take the pay cut and push for a move it’s okay, it’s his good right. I just hope for the sake of justice that he will lose his England place for this and will have worse teams to chose from when he finally moves in 24/25. Btw, has the captains duty been removed from him already?

He’s worth 35m of anybody’s money. Everton pay that sort of cash for Michael Keane and James Tarkowski ffs.
Both would be on a third of his wage, that’s a consideration.

We should just take his break even value (£27m for the remaining amortization of his contract) and run, provided we don’t have to subsidize his wage.

This is the problem. If Southgate picked on merit then he’d be out of the England set up and would be actively looking for a move right now. The fact that Gareth has clear favourites means Harry can pick up his fat cheques on our bench and still start for his country.

Would be an absolute travesty if we aren't able to make a deal with someone (West Ham?) before the window closes.

The only thing he'll "achieve" by staying on is to lose his status as a starter for England (maybe even his status as a squad member). Nobody wants that, surely.

Surely not in the long run.

How many starts are we talking about, realistically, next season? How many appearances from the bench? He isn't a player ETH wants to rely on either as a starter (obviously) or as a backup (he doesn't fit the system).

Southgate won't keep picking someone who's a mere fringe player at his club.

Yes. Yes he will.

Philips and Maguire will almost definitely be in the starting XI next summer for England even if they don’t play a single minute for their clubs this upcoming season.

Just Southgate things.

Can't see any clubs paying him close to the reported 220k a week he's now on though.

At this point I'd accept a transfer fee of £27 million and make him an offer of around £10 million up front just to get him away from the club.

If they offer him a £120k ish 4 years contract I think he would take that, if he sits on his ass for another 2 years with us for that £190k, by the time that runs out its hard to see any club offering an out of shape 32 year old anything close to £100k, so he’d be missing out.

Didn't Southgate say a few months ago that if Maguire doesn't start getting more game-time his place will be in jeopardy? Of course saying it and doing it is a different story.

Honestly if he played for wolves, Aston villa, Fulham I bet teams would pay this price, it's just weird how undervalued United players are to other sides

If he was playing for any of those clubs he wouldn't be on 220k a week.

Yes, but even if Southgate genuinely loves Maguire (on a personal level, a professional level or a combination of the two), he obviously can't keep picking him if he doesn't get the minutes at his club.

This is basic stuff. The England manager cannot and will not pick a player who hardly features for his club over a significant period of time.

thing is with maguire, is that none of his team mates have any respect for him. they don't rate him and they hold him in poor regard as a defender and a leader. he's stealing a living there and he knows it. he simply doesn't have the skills or attitude to turn things around for himself and it's going to be rough on him if he stays next season.

He's not going to take that sort of a pay cut. He could easily sit it out here and get a big offer from an overseas club in two years time.

Bullshit. Of course he’s worth £35m. He’s England’s first choice CB. Teams just think we are mugs.

Tbf, this goes back to the Sir Alex days, we would take any sort of reasonable fee just to move players on as it usually signified that we were done or the player was desperate to move on in search of more football. Butt and Phil Neville for instance went for fees that were absolute bargains for what they were and had achieved at all levels.

He will if theres no standout replacement. Englands CBs arent exactly top quality, and you know Maguire/Stones has had the best partnership even with Maguire having limited minutes time before the last world cup in Qatar. The tournament format woul work or somebody like Maguire with Southgate in charge.

With Colwill, Mings and Stones, alongside Walker, Southgate has fairly strong tactical selection of CBs. I wouldn't be surprised if Maguire is dropped.

Didn't realize you were on the in with the United squad, pray tell us whether they rate Sancho, does Rashford deserve a massive pay raise, are they glad to see the back of DDG - spill please

To be fair to Southgate, why would he drop Maguire? Maguire always play very well for England. In fact he is England best CB under Southgate. He is a very good player in certain system that suits him.

I think there will be club interested in signing him especially Italian clubs where Maguire's style will be perfect for them because Serie A is generally less intense and slower pace.

It's not his value that is the stumbling block for most clubs, It's the wages that are a killer. Very few Premier league clubs are in a position to pay a player 200,000 a week.

i'm best mates with verane, we own a vineyard together. he keeps sending me pictures on whatsapp of maguire with 'kick me' written on the back of his jersey and luke shaw filling his boots up with shampoo. my fave is a pic of one of the canteen staff sticking his knob into harry's spinach and ricotta roulade with a beetroot jus. i won't even mention what they did to his tuscany three-bean salad. i'll send it on to you if you like. what's your number?

He should drop him if he can't get in the side. It's what good international managers do they pick the players who are playing. I know the international game is slower, but if he can't get a game how is going to be match fit?

Again: no, he will not if Maguire is reduced to a pure fringe player at United (not to mention one that everybody knows is not really wanted by the manager).

He picked him for the last World Cup after Maguire had lost his status as a starter for United, but that was, then, a recent situation and Maguire actually played a lot - relatively speaking - for United due to injuries.

If Maguire turns into a figure who's only a member of United's squad because we can't get anyone to buy him (due to money issues), and he'll be reduced to making cameo appearances in pointless matches (which will further enhance his unfortunate "meme" status), there's no chance Southgate will keep picking him and (certainly not) starting him.

The point is that everyone and his granny knows that ETH doesn't fancy Maguire. He won't start and he won't be a preferred backup either. He's essentially finished at United. And there's no chance whatsoever that a player like that will keep his England status intact if he doesn't move on now.

It doesn't matter. He is one of the most consistent and key player for England under Southgate. He was 5th choice CB this year at Utd but whenever he played for England, he was still very good. As long as Southgate is in charge, Maguire will play key roles for England. To be fair to Maguire, he deserves his England place.
