Maguire | he stays!

Even if he does improve he'll always be a liability in a high line because of his lack of pace so what's the point?
Could always make up for the lack of pace with better reading of the game and/or positioning. Do all centerbacks need to be a Usain Bolt regen to be successful at defending?

I'm not Maguire's biggest fan but I sure as hell hope he gets it right if he were to stay or he could be facing an even more hostile crowd.

Definitely. A sizable portion of our "fanbase" seems to personally hate the guy.

Why do we assume he would be bothered if he doesn't get as many games. Perhaps he just wants to stay in England and enjoy his salary. He is at the tail end of his career and looking forward to "retirement".
30 is prime age for a CB, he could have another 3-4 good years and still picking up a paycheck for a few more on top of that.

Personally from my POV it's just that he doesn't fit the style Erik is trying to implement

I agree and that's absolutely fine. I just think some of our worst fans have crossed the line like they did with Phil Jones and its embarrassing.

I hope we learn our mistake on this one. Overpaid an average CB and handing out him big contract is always a mistake. It’s becoming more of a wishful thinking kind of signing, and that’s just because we paid him well. He was never anything near a world class defender at first place, nor does he has anything worth of world class potential. Yet we paid him for world class fee and world class contract for a defender.

Yeah same with De Gea copping stick too

I've been having arguments with posters the last few days over that. He was our best player for 4 years and they can't go a day without moaning about him. Genuinely annoying how ungrateful some of our fans are.

Don't know if its all United fans but I remember him posting his wedding photos to Facebook and he got trolled to high heavens for that. Some people are disgusting.

Yeah 14-18 he was one of the best in the world, unfortunately since that World Cup it's gone downhill. That was also around the time we saw the emergence of new style GK

I think it was Phil Jones' last post on Instagram for about 6 years. I just checked and he's made 3 posts when he left, he has his wedding photo from 2017 and everything else is deleted. He basically got harassed on social media so seems to have dropped off completely. I remember an interview with the guardian where he mentioned he got it in person too even when he was with his daughters.

Most of the internet has the empathy and compassion of a clinical psychopath. What do we think about the Greece incident and it's effect on him? Was that at all part of the issue? Does time and Ricardo Carvalho heal?

No doubt it has affected him

Pretty harrowing encounter wasn't it. I think it affected him as well and as much as I've been happy to see him out the team and calling him slabhead, I'd much rather a comeback story.

No one is hating on the guy for training hard. People are frustrated with this whole ‘fight for my place’ shtick, when it’s clearly a lost cause. He is essentially holding back squad development to be an overpaid back-up.

No, the club is holding back squad development by not paying him the full sum of his contract.

There is zero reason why he should be expected to forgo some of his earnings in the interest of a club who doesn't give a feck about him.

He's going to block out 30 million from our budget and is a huge mistake from our past. Would categorize him the same as lingard actually. Loves the stature and salary, has unrealistic hopes that he is good enough and much like Jones, I see him refusing to leave and just enjoying his pay.

At least lingard and Jones had academy lad and injuries as redeeming factors. This guy thinks no end of himself and thinks he is better than 5th choice as a CB.

I mean, 5th choice, imagine that. Behind varane, Martinez, Lindelof and shaw. That should be a personal affront to a 30 year footballer who was purchased for significant money.

We all know the"fight for his place" rubbish is deluded or is a cynical attempt to cash in.

He should have some level of realistic ambition to play regularly. The fact he lacks this speaks volumes about his character.

Don't begrudge him for wanting to show what he can do but I don't think anyone seriously expects him to have a future at the club. He can get better on the ball but he can't gain a yard of pace or turn twice as fast, those are features of his body. He has better defenders in front of him in the queue. Given that he's also worth a few quid, we should still be forcing a sale.

It was an awkward exit for De Gea with United slowly backing away.....

I think we might need to deal with Maguire a bit more directly and tell him we are happy for him to leave for a new challenge/not part of plans

Maybe we are playing the waiting game with interested clubs, maybe we are waiting for an injury to a Botman/Zouma/Dier to force a team into action....

Maguire will be a liability in a team passing out more regularly

Training 3 times a day for 3 weeks will only make him more tired. I don't think it'll improve anything outside of fitness and during the preseason all players will regain it anyway. Now if you're talking about him spending 10,000 hours in improving his pace and ball control under pressure, he might get better at those but that is impossible to achieve at United. Just imitate what Smalling and Darmian did and go to Italy. He can be one of the best defenders there.

I know people are talking out of compassion for someone who wants to rebuild his career at united, but unfortunately for our manager to be successful he needs to be ruthless (not rude) and sack players no matter how hard they train. This is the reality of this business.

Another myth, Terry was more than an equal partner for Carvalho.
How do you think Terry would do in a modern system like the one EtH wants to play? I think he'd struggle the same as Maguire has, although I think Terry was a much much better CB than Maguire ever was, (but he's also thick as two short planks).

I can't picture Terry taking the ball on the half turn and being press resistant, he seems like a hoof it long type, but I only ever watched Chelsea when we played them or in the odd CL game when we weren't involved. Maguire needs to find a club playing a retro style, and I hope he finds one soon.

Interesting how this brief has come out just as De Gea's been released. He probably thinks he'd look much better with a more capable keeper as an out ball.

If true then he is missing one crucial part. When he is in control of the ball, its his feet that is in control, not De Gea's.

My memory isn't perfect, but I recall him having his best season after the Greece arrest. It's the season after the Euros that things went south and people started treating him like the Antichrist.

Yep, true. A contract was signed, and he is entitled to be paid for the rest of it. The original mistake was the club giving him that contract in the first place.

But him staying under the pretense of fighting for his place is either delusional or dishonest. He’s shown over a number of seasons that he’s not capable. It’s harsh, but if he actually wanted to help the club, he’d leave.
He has the right to stay if he wants, but he isn’t helping the club or himself (outside of his bank account).

4th choice CB works hard in pre-season, gets abused for doing so by cafe.

Isn't training three times per day during preseason when you report back, pretty much standard thing?

It sounds like sensationalist title more than anything...

Erik needs to simply inform him striaght up that he wont even be playing for us. Its very commendable to see him work hard but he isnt good enough for us. Onana and Maguire sounds like a complete disaster.

I often think about this when reading or posting something negative, do you think players read places like this? Personally i wouldn't be able to help myself even if i know it would be negative.

But that's the thing you have to clarify where they "crossed a line" because a player would have to go out of there way to come here and people should be free to speak their mind in a fan forum regardless of how negative or hateful it is, its not like directly going to their Twitter and taking a shit on their doorstep which is (expected) but obviously not acceptable.

I dont know, could be quite the spectacle watching Maguire hang back and cover goal while Onana goes on a mazy run up the pitch.

This would be quite the sight

Good on Harry for working hard on starting the season in shape. Still hoping we’re able to shift him, of course, I think at this point it’s the best move for both parties. Salary will be a big obstacle though
