Maguire | he stays!

I actually can't envisage a club signing him. The only club I could really see taking him was Villa but they're close to signing a CB (can't remember who, but they've spent a lot of money on him) and Diego Carlos is back who they spent £28m on last year plus they have Mings and Konsa.

Leicester obviously have been relegated so they are out the picture, as well as the other top 6. Brighton won't touch him with a barge pole on the wages he'd ask and I don't think Everton will either due to FFP.

Villa are getting Pau Torres, who was our scouts pick above Martinez

Exactly this.
The same applies to Sancho. We were the only one in for him. Even if his salary just got bumped 20 percent the prospect to play for Manchester United should have been more than enough for Sancho to join us.

Beyond stupidity how we deal with salaries. It's a big problem. Now we are stuck with Maguire and we can't replace him, because we need to sell first in order to buy players and this will stunt our progress.
There must be some aspect to giving out wages that warrants these seemingly ridiculous pay packets we here about. It seems to be linked to the transfer price if I had to guess and every club probably has to deal with it.

Easiest way to get rid would be for the Qataris to just buy him a palace in the Middle East to make up for the paycut he'd have to take.

This is were we do need to set an example with Maguire. Brief the press that Maguire is 4/5th choice, promote Bruno to captain and add that we will be looking to bring in a new young defender to be the 4th choice CB. Then let Maguire choose whether he wants to stay or go. The reality of it is if he thinks he will even get the same appearances as last season he'll probably stay as he would still make the England team. Whereas if it was made clear publicly that he would play less than 10 games in the season, is no longer captain etc then the ball is in his court. Players know we won't push them out which puts us in a weak position with sales. We need to set examples that when your time is up, your time is up. Fergie did it, but for some reason since he's left we seem to be afraid to do it.

nobody wants this big slow lumbering pile of turd and even more so now that his salary has reverted back to normal with the CL clause....ffs we'll not get rid of him

We'll be stuck with him. None of the clubs that could take on his salary want him, and I don't see Harry taking a pay cut to play every week at a mid-table club somewhere, at least until Southgate stops selecting him.

Normally you would never do that, but in this case it makes sense. If you did that with any player with any sell on value, their valuation would tank. However, Maguire has no value to us. The only way someone might buy him for 20m is if we effectively give them that 20m back to subsidise his wages, so we don't break the other teams wage structure.

Do Chelsea and Arsenal want him? They seem to have loads to spend.
Both Chelsea and Arsenal seem to be opting for younger players right now. It would go completely against the grain to sign a 30yr old on high wages. Especially one who's reputation has gone down the toilet.

Whether he stays or not I hope Ten Hag is definitive in not selecting him again. I've never known a single player who comes in and instantly makes our defence so poor.

He is capable of being half decent but his confidence is shot to bits and he is rusty. The only way I think that changes is regular football and giving him that would be detrimental as even at his best he is not as good as Licha, Varane or even Shaw. He has a long way to go in getting his confidence ect back to even be on the same level as Lindelof.

Part of me feels harsh imagining him at his age rotting in the reserves and I think it's always important to note that he'd love to be playing well and things to be coming off for him, he is always in shape and shows up no matter what scrutiny he's under. With that said no one is forcing him to stay and his contract doesn't guarantee him he will get playing time even if it's to the detriment of the first team.

The only club likely to spend money on a player in Maguire's situation and current profile is... Manchester United.

Yeah but he's really fast and a great ball playing centre back. Pep said so. He'd do great for your lot, your fans should start a position to sign him.

This is exactly how I thought it would go. Not good enough for the top tier clubs. Too expensive for the low tier clubs. Possibly affordable to an extent, but likely not value for money relative to other players, for the mid tier clubs.

Yep, hes a good player that loads of clubs would love to have... at the right price and on the right wages. Those wages are probably £120k and ~£20m fee. Hes on £200k/week here so would he move to take a pay cut and play? I don't know.

I have zero issues with Maguire. Hes not up to snuff for us but hes been a model professional for the most part and we agreed that contract. We will probably have to let him go for a pittance and hope someone is willing to push the transfer fee they would have paid onto his wages or we keep him until the end of his contract and let him leave on a free.

At the end of the day this is what happens when you give players high base salaries and then find out that they either don't fit your style of play or don't live up to their salaries.

We have had an awful scattergun approach to recruitment over the years and this is just one of the massive downsides.

It looks like we have 2 more years of this pathetic excuse of a footballer. Bloody 6 year contract...
He should be stripped of captaincy immediately, have no idea what Ten Hag is waiting. It's an insult to Casemiro, Varane(and even Rashford, Bruno, Shaw, Lisandro, Mount...) that this clown is their captain. Should be humiliated until he leaves the club.

Clearly you forgot how bad we were when he played when Martinez got injured
Its not possible to sort all our issues in 1 window especially with a limited budget, ownership mystery and such high player wages. And we have been terrible for years to sell players. If keeping him means we can get Kane or a better ST then it wont be a bad move.

Keeping him / replacing him makes little difference to our budget for a striker, given he would be replaced by someone on much lower wages as a backup and with the proceeds of his sale.

Great just fecking great . Be better off letting him go for free at this rate

To be honest I’d happily let him go for free as his wages must now be £200K a week, he’s deadwood and can’t play how ETH wants so saving £200K a week is better than nothing.

Chelsea's owners, Clearlake, are investors in the Saudi league. Easy business for them, unfortunately.

Clearlake handles some form investments for PIF or they have invested into Clearlake funds.

PIF/ the state are majority shareholders of the 4 biggest Saudi teams.

Haven't seen anything that says Clearlake are invested in the Saudi League.

Spent the whole of the second half of last season thinking he was a cert to go this summer. Now I think he’ll end up staying. Doesn’t look there’s much happening with him at the moment at all.

This. Although of course don’t know what’s going on behind the curtain, I have the feeling we are way to soft again. Remove him from all captaincy connections and brief the press. Actively offer him to the Saudis. Sit down with him, tell him he is 4th choice and won’t see the pitch a lot the next 12 months. If he still doesn’t push for a move/take a pay cut to go to a mid table team well then it’s okay, it’s his choice to risk his England spot etc. But right now it seems we don’t even wanna change something, don’t want to get Kim in etc.

I don't think he really cares about playing for England. He's just sitting on a wage that no one sane was/is ever going to offer him. When the contract is done, he'll be 32 and then he'll join a PL club fighting relegation or Saudi Arabia/MLS. It's about money. There is no way force him out. I don't think he really cares about playing football.

Saudis could be our only hope, but i have a feeling he doesn't want to live there(leave England).

Apologies, I might be misinformed

It would be absolutely bizarre if he doesn't move. For his sake more then anything... just don't see how it's good for him being our 4th choice CB.

Really surprised how little noise there has been around this.

fecking this stoney.

Boils my piss the gom.

Hehe yes. He's become one of the biggest current symbols of everything still wrong with the club.
I think I detest Moyes and even Mourinho less than him, which says a lot.

Southgate defaults to him regardless for England so that probably factors into him staying. Doesn’t matter that Tomori wins Serie A with AC Milan, it’s Slabhead all the way under Southgate.

He’s helped take him all the way to a penalty shootout away from winning a top international competition, scoring in that shootout and playing exactly the kind of conservative football Southgate likes, so it’s hardly surprising.

I think we'll end up loaning him out with an option to buy. Someone will stump up a third of his wages and give us a couple million with an option to buy for something like £15million. No-one is paying a significant fee with these wages.

We do need to move this forward though, publicly inform of a new captain and bring in a new CB would be a starter.
